LETTER OF APPLICATION

My name is Karunakar Nooney and I am a Masters student in Petroleum Engineering at the Delft
University of Technology, Netherlands and expect to graduate in September 2015. I am very
interested in working for OMV E&P in Romania as a Junior Drilling Engineer and in this letter, I will
elaborate on why my application deserves to be progressed to the next stage of the recruitment
process.

I have experience in onshore drilling. Over the course of 14 tours, I started as a Roughneck and
worked my way up to the position of Assistant Driller. Whenever required, I have stood in for the
Driller on the controls of the Rig for drilling down & for tripping operations. I have gained exposure
to routine procedures such as Casing Running, Coring, Well Head installation etc. Allying the
practical knowledge accumulated in the field with the theoretical knowledge learnt at University has
allowed me to develop a working knowledge of Well Engineering fundamentals. This experience will
therefore better prepare me to deal with the sharp learning curve typical of graduate positions in this
discipline.

I demonstrated my ability to achieve results during my summer internship at Vermilion Energy

Netherlands. I and another intern were given the task of increasing production rates for gas wells in a
certain area. We analysed the reason for production decline and accordingly designed and implement
a foam injection treatment which achieved successful results in two wells. In the short span of eight
weeks, we completed analytical studies for selection of target wells, chemicals and pumping
equipment and then execute the field trials in a safe manner within budget. By proving the
effectiveness of the designed treatment, Vermilion now has a field tested method to boost production
which it plans to extend to more wells in a systematic manner.

Because of my desire to work in the Drilling industry, I am writing my Master thesis on a topic
involving the emergent technology of Casing while Drilling. In this project, I hope to understand the
nature of the dynamic loads & vibrations experienced by the casing string when it is used for the
drilling process itself. This knowledge could possibly help in successfully drilling wells prone to
mechanical drill string failures.

Having relocated to the Netherlands for my Masters, I get the chance to work with people from many
different countries on a daily basis. As an example, I recently completed a project at my university
along with two fellow students where we presented a field development plan for the North Sea Tern
oil field. In six short weeks, we worked on many different tasks ranging from geological modelling to
economic analysis. One of my tasks was to design the drilling program for the field. This meant that I
had to optimize the target locations & wellbore trajectories for maximum oil recovery at minimal cost.
Communication between team members was crucial to the success of this project and this experience
helped me become a better team player.

I have chosen to apply to this position because of my connection to the Netherlands where I have
been living since 2013 for my Masters studies. I have previously lived in Nigeria and Russia and my
family is now partially settled in America. Consequently, I have no fixed ties to any particular
geographic location and am enthusiastic about relocating to Romania should my application be
successful. I look forward to hearing further from OMV E&P and would like to thank you for
considering my application.
