Unit 2 Showing Concentration and Making Interruptions

Homework Review
-Have some students stand up to read their 2 things they learned from the Ten Steps to Effective
Listening.

A. Review the Phrases on P. 12 of Challenge to Speak


-T reads with emotion, Ss repeat
-In pairs, have Ss practice Showing Concentration phrases (in Eng if possible, if not, then Chn). Use
at least 5 phrases, then partners switch roles.
-In pairs, have Ss practice Making Interruption phrases (in Eng if possible, if not, then Chn). Use at
least 5 phrases, then partners switch roles.
-T goes around to different students telling a story and the student practices either Showing
Concentration or Making Interruptions.

B: Acting out the Ten Steps


-Divide class into 10 groups of 3. (T will join one of the groups to even things out)
-Have each group pull a number of the bag and that will be their assigned Step.
-Give them 5-10 min. to discuss how they will act out their Step.
Instructions
-Have two members act out what it looks like NOT to follow the Step. Have students guess
which Step theyre acting out.
-Have one member give a thorough summary & explanation of the Step in Chn or English
-Then have two members act out what it looks like to follow the Step.

C. Acting Listening Telephone Charades


-Show the short film Lava (or substitute by having students talk about their favorite movie).
-Give the students 5 min. to write down 3 reasons why they liked/disliked the film. Tell them to
memorize it.
-Randomly call up 5 students, retain 2 in the class, send 3 outside.
-Student 1 will relay to Student 2, the 3 reasons why they liked/disliked the film. Student 2 should
practice Showing Concentration phrases.
-Send Student 1 outside and have Student 3 come in. Student 2 will relay to Student 3, the 3
reasons given, then Student 2 will sit down.
-Repeat with Student 4 and 5.
-Finally, bring Student 1 back in and have Student 5 relay to Student 1 the 3 reasons. Student 1
should also practice the phrases. See how closely they match or dont match.

*Challenge: to up the difficulty level, the T can give the initial address.
-I have 4 daughters, the eldest is 10, the second is 8, the third is 6, and the youngest is 2.
-My favorite things about Xining are the weather, the food, and my students.
-I really like photography because with my camera, I can capture the beauty of the world and share
it with my friends.
-One of my favorite books is the Lord of the Rings because when I read it, I feel as if Im transported
away on a grand adventure in a faraway land.

*Variation: since the students sit in columns, can play telephone down the columns.
