MAIN GOAL OF SMART SCHOOL

1. Produce a thinking and technology-literate workforce

2. Provide all-round development of individual (intellectual, emotion, spiritual)
3. Provide opportunities of enhance individual strengths and abilities
4. Increase participation of stakeholders
5. Democratize education

WHAT IS SMART SCHOOL?

Smart school is one of Malaysian education system for each leaning institution which are
reconstructs systematically teaching-leaning and school management that was be ordered to
prepare students for Information Age. Smart School initiative became one of seven flagships
application that are part of Malaysias Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project which is
aims to capitalize on the presence of leading-edge technologies and the rapid development of
the MSCs infrastructure. It is to jump-start deployment of enabling technologies in schools
around Malaysia. In early 1996 Ministry of Education was involves in intense discussion
about Smart School which is about the concept and its implements on the Malaysian
education system. Smart school was carried in year 2000. By 2010, approximately 10,000 of
primary and secondary schools in Malaysia are Smart Schools.

Learning institution of Smart School was created systemically reinvented in

term; teaching and learning practice and school management in order to prepare student for In
formation Age. In the Information Age, a Smart School will evolve over time continuously
developing its professional staff, education resources and its administrative capabilities to
adapt to changing condition, while continuing to prepare student life.

Teaching and learning process were included the process of curriculum, pedagogy,
assessment and teaching-learning materials in a mutually reinforcing, coherent manner. The
curriculum process will help student achieve overall balanced development and integrate
knowledge, skills, values, and correct use of language. Then, Smart School pedagogy will
seek to make learning more interesting, motivating, stimulating and meaningful. It is also
involve the children mind, spirit and bodies in the learning process.
CHALLENGES IN SMART SCHOOL

1) The increasing rapidly in technologies

To make the best use of new ideas and tools, teachers must understand the relevance,
usefulness and usability of those ideas or tools. Teachers need to be computer literate
themselves and be confident in the use of ICT in order to understand what ICT can do to
enhance their own development and to enrich the learning experience of their students. It
because in this era have many application have been make and all the applications is
different in used it. So that teacher must more creative and advance about technologies than
students. Now it no more wonder about technologies, that why teachers not only need to
focus their full attention toward ways of learning but should also look at the current
technological developments to make teaching method more easy. That means, teacher must
open minded about technologies to make students more interesting in their study. That be the
challenges for teacher to explore more about technologies that country have. It because in era
smart school the technologies must be used in teaching. In the same time teacher also must to
refer to the textbook because all sillibes must follow to the textbook. That why it be a one of
challenges to teacher because for study must refer to the book but for explanation to students
teacher have refer technologies to make students more understand about theory in the book.
Teacher have use different techniques in teaching. It because have a few of subjects students
must see the shape to get more understand about that topic especially sciences. Many students
not interesting subjects sciences because they not understand about the theory. So teachers
can use technologies for example youtube. Youtube is the website of movie where we can
upload anything as long as the movie is good and useful. For example chapter about cells
teacher can use google to search picture of cells and youtube to see the experiments of cells.
All of this technologies can make students more understand and interesting about what they
have learn. The important is teacher cannot silence or ignore about technological
developments because all of this can help teacher in teaching.

2) Lack of Skills

Not many of educators who utilize the Internet as an alternative that provides access
to information that can help enhance teaching and learning materials. However, the use of e-
learning in schools, particularly the use of the internet or www is still low. It because for era
all teacher they not disclosed to technologies. When come evolution of smart school that
using technologies especially computer they cannot to follow the technologies developments.
For example using a slide show when teaching. For the beginning all teacher in school not
have a skills to conduct or use computer. It give a challenges to teacher to follow the era of
smart school. Effect of that teacher must going seminar that give explanation about comuter
and what their function. All of this will take time and at the same it will give trouble to class
because teacher have attend seminar to expose students use computers. It because have
seminar take a few day so have a certain teacher must cover they class it will give trouble to
the teacher because they have to handle many of class. Not that, the sillibes in teaching also
give problems because teacher have teach quickly to catch up and make sure the chapter done
follow the time. It because in school also have examination follow the chapter in textbook, if
the chapter not done how the examination can be proceed so it will effect to students.
Interesting in study will decrease for students because teacher cannot explain to details about
that chapter especially subject sciences. That why it one of challenges to teacher in era smart
school. Teacher must set the time carefully to make sure the learning process going well. For
example teacher have make a tuition class after school time at evening to catch up the chapter
and make sure there is no chapter lagged at the same time. This tuition class also can give
teacher problem if the students cannot give cooperation because this class will make after
school time so have students absents to the class because too tired or so on. If this situation
still same it will make school level become lower percentage due to lack of facilities and
skills.

3) Lack of Infrastructure and Support Materials

Expanding computer literacy education be an important agenda in line with the

national ICT policy in the 21st century. The era of information technology requires
educational systems and institutions to formulate the ultimate goal of school education in
shaping young computer literate and skilled. An important challenge of education in
secondary schools is to provide computer facilities for all students. This means that the
computer facilities are not limited to certain groups of people but involves the entire student
regardless of economic status, social, ethnic, and so on. Sophistication of the ICT facilities
available in secondary schools at this time is not uniform. Some are put computers in the
classroom, some of which put all the computers in the lab. There are those who owns a
connection to the Internet, some are not. Teachers who use the guidance contained in this
document shall first determine the level of ICT infrastructure capacity available in their
schools before planning any learning activities using ICT. This is to ensure that the activities
carried out yielded the optimum fit with the learning objectives. As a guide, are included
under this matrix shows the relationships between the level of technology and learning.

Challenges of the present and future in the education sector is the provision of a complete
computer infrastructure for the teaching and learning methods. However, the provision of
Internet access alone does not guarantee effective teaching learning on-line. Attitude of
teachers and students on the use of technology must be considered to ensure its effectiveness
as a method of teaching.

4) Inadequate Financial Resources

The school does not have sufficient financial resources to finance the cost of various
information technology usage will return to conventional learning. Weaknesses of the school
leadership is committed to the use of ICT can also cause missed school from current premier
change occurring. Especially school that far away from town. Their developments is decrease
compare to school at the town. So the facilities at that school will not enough and good. It
will give a challenges to teacher to make the era of smart school at the school. If the school
far away from the town they tough to get line so if that school have computer still cannot to
connect the internet. It will make the computer cannot be function very well. Schools also
failed to play a positive role in developing students to computer literacy, especially in rural
areas. This change will provide a big challenge for instructors. This situation can make
students in this school will left behind with technologies developments. In this way, the
students just learning in old techniques that will make students not interesting in study and
not too much understand about what they learn at schools because they just depend what their
teacher explain to them. Students cannot explore more what that have they learn at school.
They should be prepared enhance the knowledge and skills to make computers as teaching
and learning technology replaces a less conventional approach based on technological
innovation.

5) Students.

Students nowadays are passive. They hope every material is provided by their teacher.
These are the things that we can observe in the classroom as learning ways that the
students are just waiting to be questioned and giving the answers. In other words, they
learn in one way only. In a question and answer session, only a few students who dared
to ask questions and give suggestions to the teachers. This is why the passivity of
students in school is often happen, but still well done and getting ignored. Not all of the
students behave in such a way, but there are still many students who behave in that way,
particularly schools in rural areas. This smart school programs is also allow students to
make a differentiate to themselves based on what they are going to learn through this
programs. Actually, the students are the one who should play an important role in
determine the direction of their learning by participation and activities. They should
think more forward and compete with the modern life. There are also some students who
are abusing the services provided towards something that contradicts the lessons that
should be used to help them compete in the current sophisticated technology. They were
taking a chance to use a pirate software, surfing the prohibited web like opening a game
website which could overpass them. Some also using an ICT infrastructure for self
interest like doing some illegal online business, using social web such as Facebook,
Twitter, MySpace, Blogger and any others.

6) Parents.

Parents are not involved in this project. Busy with their work so that they can upgrade
their life and provide the better environment to their children. They think that the Smart
School education project is the responsible of government and teachers only. Some
parents did not know anything about the Smart School programs and how its going. They
are too busy with their own works and put the whole education of their children under
the school surveillance only. Meanwhile, parents who should have the final say with
regard to the lessons to be given to their children. This attitude is already being exposure
to parents today. They do not care about it without thinking for their children sake. But,
if something bad happens, they are the first people to protest.

7) Negative attitude of teachers.

A teacher especially a senior teachers has been blended with traditional methods and
difficult to adapt new instructional technology. They are more concerned with hereditary
teachers who are more experienced in teaching. Hence, they assume that the Smart
School program is only able to give a negative impression to the students even do not
bother to find out about this program. Even if teachers are willing to make changes to
integrate information technology but some are not willing to make changes for certain
teaching and learning conventional relevant to the examination system. Schools are more
concerned with achieving excellent results in PMR and SPM. Basically, if the results
obtained each year is quite good and excellent responses teacher why should we change
what is already good for students. With these attitudes the effectiveness to make a
change is difficult. Integrating the computer in teaching requires a lot of time for teachers
prepare. Supplies needed include providing teaching materials and to setup the material
on the computer before classes begin. With a lot of time teaching, some teachers have a
number of teaching hours of 27 hours a week, it is difficult for teachers to create lesson
plans in schools and also to set up a computer laboratory and teaching materials.
Teachers also have the burden of duties other than teaching will take during school hours
as a teacher timetable, the secretary of the examination, the heads of the committee,
after-school sports, activities of associations, meetings of district, PTA, courses long and
short term. This situation will make it difficult for teachers to do a steady supply
especially if they need to provide their own materials, for example if a teacher needs to
get material from the internet and to select appropriate materials sometimes take hours.
They prefer to use the old and common way and afraid to undergo changes and bear the
risk. Implementation of the Smart School is a step in the right and in accordance with the
needs of global emphasize the use of IT. To meet this need, supply and demand must be
made at an early stage again. For it, teachers should play a role in educating students to
become IT literate students. The main thing that should be emphasized is that students
are interested and willing to face learning. Therefore, teachers should arouse interest and
fun in the students so it's easier to convey their knowledge.

8) Lack of awareness from citizen.

They think that smart school is school for smart student only. They do not have
any proper disclosure of smart school. There is awidespread misunderstanding of the
educators and parents who think that there is a must to use computer and ICT facilities
in school. Though the proportion is only the catalyst for the honoring of the smart
concept. They worry if the students will be more aware of matters related to this
technology, which only leads to harm and forget the origin and do not appreciate the way
on how hard their ancients to learn without the use of technology. Government need to
organize a carnival that promoted smart school program and giving some complete
briefing the advantages and right consumption of this program to dismiss the
misconception s about smart school. Citizen should not heard and take any bad things or
bad view from others which allegedly spread such a bad rumors about something that we
did not know.
Advantages of Technology In Education

1. Parents Peace of Mind

Cell phones now allow us to stay in contact with our friends and family anywhere that we are.
It is how students communicate problems and emergencies with their parents when they are
at school as well.

2. The Information Highway

Any answer to any question can be found with a few clicks of the keys on the computer or
smart phone. Powerful search engines allow an organized and simply way to find the answers
that students may need for assignments or projects.

3. Broaden The Mind

Before the internet, children knew what their family taught them. This caused their political
and religious views to be the only ones that the children knew. Having access to the
technology will expose them to things outside of their parents interests and help them to form
their own opinions.

4. Brings Some Fun Into The Classroom

Learning the same exact way from the same person every day can really getboring. This
boredom turns into a lack of motivation in the students. When they are able to integrate
computer learning into their normal schedule, they become much more excited to learn.

5. Applicable Education
In the working world, in nearly every job you may take, you have to know how to operate a
computer. Teaching this skill in children early will give them an advantages and a learning
curve for when they are adults.
Disadvantages of Technology In Education

1. Access To Inappropriate Content

The biggest concern when it comes to the use of technology in schools is how easy
pornographic, violent, and other inappropriate materials can be accessed and viewed. This
could cause big problems if the material is shared with other students while in the classroom.

2. A Disconnected Youth
This harmful effect of technology has already come to light in todays world. People are
attached to their screens almost 24/7, which is causing an entirely new set of social issues to
pop up. This translates into the school system in a bit of a different way, however. More and
more students are experiencing social anxieties when it comes to face to face interactions, but
are perfectly fine socializing online.

3. The Cyberbullying Trap

Giving students access to anonymous accounts and endless contact avenues can only lead to
trouble. Cyberbullying has become a real and in our face problem among young people
today. This harassment has no end, which includes the class room. There is also no way to
monitor or discipline students who are involved.

4. Inevitable Cheating
While have an easy access to information may seem like a great thing, it can become a real
problem in a test taking environment. Cell phones have made cheating easier than ever. You
no longer have to figure out how to write all of the answers down, you can just look them up!

5. A Major Distraction
Attentiveness drops drastically in the classroom when students have their cell phones or other
technologies out. The focus shifts from their teacher and education, to whatever they are
looking at, playing, or doing on their phones.
CONCLUSION

Smart School left us a big leap and impact in our local education which to achieve our
nation vision that is Vision 2020. However, cooperation and ownership of Smart school
would be overcome the challenge effectively instead of the continuous effort toward making
its a making big success requires fully involvement of all stakeholders.
