SupplementaryIncomeSourcesAmongFilipinoRegisteredNurses
BACKGROUNDOFTHESTUDY
Mostpeopleinthemodernworldengageinmultiplejobs.Thismostlikelydueto
increasingneedsandscarcityofresources.AccordingtoanarticlefromthePennsylvania
CPAJournal(J.Ziss,2012),thefactseekingadditionalemploymentoranadditional
incomesourceisatrendobservedinawiderangeofindividualsandcanbeahallmark
signofaweakeconomy.Infact,thisisadvisedas acommonpracticeforpotential
employeesandwouldbeemployersareoftenadvisedtoexploretheideaofexternal
article(J.ParhamandS.Gordon,2011)describesthistrendashavingdetrimentaleffects
salaries and working conditions as their main reasons for engaging in multiple
occupations.Thishastheunintendedeffectofinterferingwiththeirmainteachingjobs
andcontributestoalessflatteringviewoftheteachingprofession.Moreontheissue,
courtauthoritiesweremorelikelytobeflexiblewithregardstotheactofmoonlighting
as was shownwhencourts sided withanemployee consideredwrongfully dismissed
whenfoundwithastakeatabarwhilstworkinginarestaurant(L.Bernier,2015).
Amorerecentstudy(C.ONeill,2015)publishedinInternationalJournalofArts
andSciencestakesacloserintotheactofmoonlightingintheacademicscene.While
financialreasonsremainastaplemotivationformoonlighters,atermdescribingfulltime
employeesengaginginadditionalemployment,thestudycitesother,nonpecuniary,or
nonfinancial,reasonsastothemotivatorsbehindthisaction.Someparticipantsstated
thattheirchoicewasmadeforotherreasonssuchasgainingworkingexperiencenot
foundintheirmaincareer,orperhapsasahobbyorassomethingtheyenjoy.Inaddition,
participantsoftenengageinawiderangeofactivityaspartoftheiradditionalcareers.In
someinstances,academicsstatedengaginginmoonlightingastaxidrivers,waitersorbar
men.
Accordingtoanotherstudy(J.Saxon,2015),moonlightingisdescribedasthe
cardiologyspecialistsintheUSareknowntoengageininternalmedicinecasesasthey
arerequiredtotakea3yearcoursefocusedontheaforementionedsubject.

option(E.Krell,2010).Oneexampleciteseconomicregressionforcingcompaniesto
reducewagesandworkhoursasaresult.Inresponse,employersmodifiedcontractsto
allowemployeestopursuesecondaryjobsinordertocompensatewageloss,whilethe
employersareabletopreventjoblossand,therefore,reductioninmanpower.
Previousstudywithregardstotheinfluencesonanindividualsacquisitionof
populationsandevenoninternationalsettings.Assuchthisstudyaimstoidentifyand
understandinfluencestojobseekingbehaviorinregisteredFilipinonursesworkingin
demographicprofiles,householdandworkcharacteristicsaffectjobseekingbehaviorin
termsofacquiringsupplementalincomesourcesinadditiontoonesprimarysourceof
incomeorcareer.
ReviewofRelatedLiteratures:
1. DemographicProfile:
Onedemographicprofilethathasrelationshipinparttimejobsseekingbehavior
istheage.Mostcommonagethatparticipatesinparttimejobsaretheadolescence
increasedparticipationofyouthsinparttimelaborandthemostcommonarethe
secondaryschoolyearsstudents (MinistryofHealth,WelfareandFamilyAffairs,
2009). Youth participation in part time labor is rare in Korea. In fact, it was
prohibited(M.Lee,E.Ju,B.Lam,J.Dean,2016).Anotherdemographicprofilethat
hasrelationshiinparttimejobsseekingbehavioristhegender.Highratesofpart
timeworkhavebeenassociatedwithhighfemaleemploymentrates.Parttimework
hasplayedakeyroleinthemodificationofthemalebreadwinnergendercontractby
enablingwomentoenterpaidworkwhilecontinuingtotakeonthemaindomestic
responsibilities(L.Msesdttir,A.Ellingster,2017).Themainroleofawifeinthe
familyistotakehousehouldresponsibilitiesbutwomennowadaysparticipateslabor
force.Internationalresearchhasshownthatwomenworkingparttimearemorelikely
to be trapped in low paid, low status jobs,as higher paying jobs offering career
2012;Grantetal.,2006).Parttimeworkdoesnotpreventwomenfromremaining
incomeinoldagewhenpensionisearningsrelated(HinrichsandJessoula,2012).
womencontinuetoearnlessthanmen,theyworkfewerhoursinpaidemployment
andtheyholdjobsofloweroccupationalworthandwithlessauthority(Yaishand
Stier,2009).Parttimeworkhasbeenfoundtodecreasewomensbargainingpower
withinhouseholdnegotiations(StierandLewinEpstein,2000)andthesizeofthe
parttimeworkforcehasbeenshowntodecreasewomensfinancialcontributionto
householdincome(StierandMandel,2009).Anotherdemographicprofilethathas
relationshiinparttimejobsseekingbehavioristhecivistatus.Familiesengagedin
parttimeworktocompensateforfamilydemands.Moststudiesagreesthatfinancial
needsarethemajormotivationforsecondaryjobs.Individualstakessecondaryjobs
topaydebts,meetnormalexpensesorsavemoney(E.Boyd,M.Sliter,S.Chatfield,
2015).
2. HouseholdCharacteristics:
Abraham Maslow symbolized mans needs as a pyramid. The bottom of the
pyramidisthemostimportantneedwhilethetopisthelessimportant.Thistheoryis
calledtheheirarchyofneeds.Basedonthepyramid,Maslowprioritizesphysiological
needsasthemostbasicneedandbeingonthebottomofthepyramid.Physiological
needincludesbreathing,food,water,sex,warmthandrest.(S.Polaski)saidthatthe
mainsourceoffamilyincomeisemployment.Thisiswhymanypeopleseeksforjobs
inordertosustaintheirfamilyneeds.Familyincomeconsistsoftheincomeofthe
Bruton,2016).Basicfamilybudgetmeasurementdependsonfamilytypebecause
expensesdependsonnumberofchildreninafamilyandtypeoffamilyheadship
whetheritissingleparentormarriedcouple(S.Allegretto,2006).Peoplelivingin
larger and younger households are typically poorer. Poor tends to prioritize their
budgetonrivalgoodssuchasfood.Butcertaingoodssuchastapwater,cooking
utensils,firewood,clothingandhousingallowssharingorbulkpurchasesuchthatthe
costperpersonofagivenstandardoflivingislowerwhenindividualslivetogether
thanapart(P.LanjouwandM.Ravallion,2014).Largerhouseholdstendstospend
lessbecausetheycanshareresources.
3. DependencyRatio
Accordingto(E.Kleiman)AStandardizedDependencyRatio,adependency
ratioisameasureofeffectwhichthedemographicprofilelikeage,sexorcivilstatus
exertsonthestandardsofliving.Itisusuallydefinedastheratiooftheyoungand
agedpopulationtotheworkingagedpopulation,ortheratioofthepopulationwhich
doesnotparticipateinthelaborforcetothatwhichdoes.Itwasalsoexplainedby(E.
Kleiman) that consumption requirements of the dependents may vary with age.
Meaning,variationsintherealburdenofmaintainingadependentpopulationneed
notbepositivelyassociatedwithvariationsinitsrelativesize.Anexampleiswhena
decreaseintherelativenumberofalldependentsisaccomplishedbyanincreaseof
the aged population. (E. Kleiman) further explained that under the labor force
participationdefinitionofdependency,intertemperalandinternationalvariationsare
complicatedbecausethepopulation'saverageparticipationratedoesnotvaryonly
with changes in its age distribution, but with changes in the social norms which
regulate working habits. (J. Ilmarinen) Aging Workers states that anyone in
becauseagingstartsfrombirthandendsondeath.But(J.Ilmarinen)statedthatthe
definitionofanagingworkerisgenerallybasedontheperiodwhenmajorchanges
occurinrelevantworkrelatedfunctionsduringthecourseofworklife.
4. Moonlighting
Moonlightingmeanshavinganotherjobotherthanonesfulltimejob(J.Parham
andS.Gordon2011).Forexampleyouareanursethenyourshiftis8hoursaday.
Afterthe8hourshiftyouworkonafastfoodrestaurantasacashier.Moonlighting
forteachersaremainlycausedbypoorsalaryandworkingconditions(J.Parhamand
S.Gordon2011).Liketeachers,moonlightingisalsocommontootherjobsthathave
lowwageslikenurses.Organisationaltheoriesofmoonlightingsuggestthatalthough
moonlightingprovidesworkerswithadditionalincome,training,andotherbenefits,it
couldalsochangetheirperceptions,decisions,andbehavioursattheirprimaryjobs.
Ingovernancetheory,moonlightingisseenasanindicatorofpoorgovernancein
Chirwa,Tobias,Dewet,Katinka,2014).
Synthesis
Moonlightingmeanshavingotherjobsthantheprimaryjob.Itisalsotermedas
secondaryorparttimejobs.Themainmotivationsinhavingsecondaryjobsarefinancial
needs.Parttimeworkersholdsecondaryjobstopaydebtssavemoneyormeetnormal
expenses.Parttimelaboriscommonamongadulthoodstudentsespeciallyhighschool.
Thisistocompensatefortheiracademicneeds.Anotherisinthefamilytocompensate
forfamilydemands.Itmaybebasicneedssuchasfood,water,homeandclothingor
fulfillingwantslikegadgetsorluxuriousobjects.Nowadays,womenalsoparticipatesin
parttimelaborforce.Themainroleofwomeninfamiliesistotakecareofhousehold

familyandtobelessdependenttothehusband.Butparttimeworksdoesnotprevent
dependencyofwivestohusbands.Themainsourceoffamilyincomeisemployment.
Familyincomeconsistsoftheincomeofthehusbandandwifeandincomefromany
investments.Familyexpensesdependonthesizeofthefamily.Itisconcludedthatbigger
familiesarepoorer.Thebiggerthefamilythemoretheexpenses.Butbiggerfamilies
allowsharingorbulkpurchaseofcommongoodssuchasfood,water,cookingutensils
andhousing.Anotherfactorthataffectparttimejobseekingbehavioristhedependency
ratio.Dependencyratioistheratioofpopulation,whichdoesnotparticipateinthelabor
forcetothatwhichdoes.Dependencyratioisalsorelatedtotheagebecauseagedpeople
inapopulationaremorelikelytobecomedependenttothosewhoareworkingbecause
theycan'tworkanymore.Youngerindividualsarealsodependenttoolderwantsbecause
theyarestillnotworkingandjustdependentonsalariesofthosewhoareworking.

SIGNIFICANCEOFTHESTUDY
Thisstudyhopeforbeneficiaryofthefollowing:

behaviorofnurseswhowishtotakeadvantageofadditionaljobopportunitiesasidefrom
their main profession. This is to help nurses who wish to follow a similar path in
moonlighting.
HospitalInstitutionsNursesworkinginthehospitalsettingwouldbenefitmorewith
increasedjobsatisfactionandperformancesolongastheirperceivedneedsaremet.This
satisfiedwith.
governmentinstitutionswouldbenefitinthesamemannerasthoseintheprivatesector.
Inturn,serviceswouldalsobenefitfromgreaterjobperformanceandsatisfaction.
FutureresearchersFocusinthisspecificphenomenoninthenursingprofessionhas
producedfewstudies.Thisstudywouldprovidebaselinedataandfurtherfoundationfor
futurestudieshopingtoexpanduponpreviousresearchdone.
ScopeAndLimitation
Tofacilitatedelimitationinunderstandingthepurposedandcontentofthisstudy,
thefollowinglimitsarespecified.ThisthesiswillbeconductedwithintheMetroManila
vicinity.TherespondentsofthestudywillbeFilipinoregisterednurseswhoareworking
inthehospitalandcommunitysettingandarewith(a)supplementaryincomesource/s.
Respondentswouldalsohaveaminimumclinicalexperienceofatleast2yearswithinthe
Philippines.Thelimitationsofthisstudyareofcourse:financialandtimeconstraints,
limitedparticipantsandscheduleoftheparticipants.

CHAPTER2
METHODOLOGY
Thischaptercontainstheresearchdesign,researchlocale,researchinstrument,
populationandsampling,datagatheringproceduresanddataanalysisprocedure.
Researchdesign
methodsthatusenumbersasitsbasisformakinggeneralizationsaboutaphenomenon.
Thesenumbersoriginatefromobjectivescalesofmeasurementoftheunitsofanalysis
calledvariables(Regoneil,2015).QuantitativeResearchisusedtoquantifytheproblem
by way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into useable
statistics.Itisusedtoquantifyattitudes,opinions,behaviors,andotherdefinedvariables
and generalize results from a larger sample population. (Wyse, 2011). This study
involve collecting the data from the participants where place in the researchermade
surveyquestionnaire.Thepurposeofthesurveymethodaimstocomparethedifferent
behaviorinseekingjobotherthanbeingafulltimenurseinhospitalsorincommunity
settings.
ResearchLocale
Theresearchsettingsrefertotheplacewherethedatawillbecollected.Thestudy
willbeconductedwithinthePhilippinearea:hospitalsandcommunitysettings.
ResearchInstrument
Thedataforthis researchwillbecollectedusingasurveyquestionnaire.The
surveyquestionnairewillbecreatedbyusingsuitablequestionsandindividualquestions
madebytheresearchers.Thesurveywillbecompromisedof19questions,whichare
relatedtotheparticipantsjobseekingbehaviorforsupplementaryincome.Ithas4parts:
supplementary income of the participants. The researchers adviser will validate the
surveyquestionnaire.Theresearcherswillalsoconsultforrevisionandimprovementof
theinstrument.
PopulationandSampling
questionnaire.Apurposivesampleisanonprobabilitysamplethatisselectedbasedon
characteristicsofapopulationandtheobjectiveofthestudy.Purposivesamplingisalso
knownasjudgmental,selective,orsubjectivesampling(Crossman,2017). Thetarget
participants are currently working in various nursing positions in the hospitals and
workingpractice,andhavesecondaryincome.Andalso,theagerangeforparticipantsis
atleast24yearsoldandabove.
ThisstudywilluseSnowBallsamplingmethod. Snowballsamplingisanon
probabilitysamplingmethodwhereresearchparticipantsrecruitotherparticipantsfora
testorstudy.Itisusedwherepotentialparticipantsarehardtofind.Itallowsforstudies
totakeplacewhereotherwiseitmightbeimpossibletoconductbecauseofalackof
participants (Andale, 2014). This sampling method involves primary data sources
nominatinganotherpotentialprimarydatasourcestobeusedintheresearch.Inother
words,snowballsamplingmethodisbasedonreferralsfrominitialsubjectstogenerate
additional subjects. Therefore, when applying this sampling method members of the
samplegrouparerecruitedviachainreferral(Dudovskiy,2016). Theresearcherswill
lookfortheparticipant,whichisafulltimenursethathassecondaryincometointerview.
After,conductingtheinterview,theresearcherswillasktheparticipanttorefertoother
nurses who has the same interest as hers. These steps are repeated until the needed
samplesizeisfound.
DataGatheringProcedure
Search for participants in hospitals and community settings within Philippine area

DataAnalysisProcedure
Thedataanalysisofthisstudywillmakeuseoffrequencydistributiontoanalyze
theparticipantsresponses.Andalso,Pearsoncorrelationcoefficient.Thiswillbeuseto
test if there is a significant relationship between the factors of job seeking behavior
influencestogetsupplementaryincome.Itwashypothesizedthatthereisnosignificant
relationshipbetweendemographicprofile,householdcharacteristicsandprimarywork
characteristics,andsupplementaryincome.Totestthishypothesis,Pearsonrwillbeused
tomeasurethestrengthanddirectionofassociationthatexists betweentwoormore
variables.APearson'scorrelationattemptstodrawalineofbestfitthroughthedataof
twovariables,andthePearsoncorrelationcoefficient,r,indicateshowfarawayallthese
datapointsaretothislineofbestfit.Itsvaluecanrangefrom1foraperfectnegative
linearrelationshipto+1foraperfectpositivelinearrelationship.Avalueof0(zero)
indicatesnorelationshipbetweentwovariables(LAERDStatistics,2013).
EthicalConsideration
TheresearcherswillseekclearancefromtheethicalcommitteeofSt.PaulManila
to conduct the study. Afterwards the researchers will then request consent from the
chosenparticipantswithregardstojoiningthestudyandcomplyingwiththeactions
requiredofthem.Participantswillbefullyinformedoftheactivitiesinvolvedbefore
givingconsentandwillbenotifiedthatallpersonalinformationwouldbetreatedwiththe
utmostconfidentiality.
