THE EFFECT OF MOTIVATION

ON THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH

LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT
1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language to be taught at school, because it is an

international language. English learning is focusing on the four language skills: listening,

speaking, reading, and writing. The teaching aim is to make students be able to acquire

the skills. However, in the teaching and learning process this aim is not easy to reach.

There are many students show that they don’t like studying English. Para murid berusaha

keras meyakinkan guru bahwa mereka benci belajar, mereka tidak peduli pada pelajaran

sekolah khususnya mereka benci pelajaran bahasa Inggris karena menganggap bahasa

inggris adalah salah satu mata pelajaran yang tidak penting untuk dipelajari dan yang

lainnya menganggapnya sangat sulit.

The aim of teaching can only be reached when the method or technique used in teaching

is effective and optimized. The power of motivation is an important thing to reach the

aim of teaching English.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In teaching at Senior High School, it is observed that many students have no interested in

learning English. The students have no spirit to study English and the students don’t care

about English. They suppose that English is not important and it is difficult to be learned.
Therefore, the teacher of English subject should be able to make them be interested in

English and can teach well at Senior High School. It is question in this study whether the

power of teacher’s motivation is effective to develop Senior High School students’

English achievement.

1.3 Purpose of the study

This study was conducted with the purpose of finding out the effect of teacher’s

motivation in developing student’s English achievement.

1.4 Reasons for choosing topic

The reasons in choosing the topic of this study are:

It is question in this study whether the power of teacher’s motivation is effective to

develop Senior High School students’ English achievement.

3. RESEARCH METODOLOGY

3.1 Research design

This research can be classified as a descriptive. In relation to descriptive research, Bogdan

and Biklen (1987:37) stated that “qualitative research is descriptive. The data collected are in the

form of words or pictures rather than number. The written results of the research contain

quotations from the data to illustrate and substantive the presentation”. This research is also

called qualitative research. It is characteristics of descriptive research.


3.2 Subject

The subject of this study is Manado Malay language, while the sampling, Miles and

Hubermans (1984:37) point out that, sampling involves not only decisions about which people to

observe or interview, but also about setting, site, events, and social processes’. The subjects of

this study consist of those speakers of Manado Malay language who lived in Tondano. The data

will be taked from the students of English Education Department. Sampling in this study can be

described as follows:

3.3 Research Instrument

In collecting data, it will be used notes, video, and recorder as instrument and she as the key

instrument. The notes will be used for writing down all the data that found in the location. And

Video/recorder will be used to record the data found in the location.


3.4 Data Collecting

In this study, the data will be collected by doing direct observation through participatory

observation and interview the informants. The selection of the informant is based on the criteria

proposed by Moleong (1991:90)

• Honest

• Responsible

• Obedient

• Talk active

• The informant must be dealt with the research topic

• Having certain comprehensive about the research topic.

3.5 Data Analysis

In analyzing data, the following steps proposed by Moleong:

• Unitizing (pemrosesan satuan)

In this part, all the data of apologizing in Manado Malay expressed by men and woman

will be presented.

• Categorization (kategorisasi)
In this part the data will be categorized according to the kinds of apology.

• Data interpretation (Penafsiran Data)

In this part the data will be interpreted
