AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression Feature
Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
Network deployment in remote rural areas, islands, and deserts generally requires leased
satellite links for Iub transmission, bringing about enormous additional costs for operators.
How to reduce Iub interface transmission bandwidth in those scenarios becomes a pressing
concern for operators.
The AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression feature multiplexes speech frames of a
single user to reduce the transmission bandwidth for AMR-NB services.

2.2 Benefits
The AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression feature reduces IP-layer transmission
bandwidth over the Iub interface for AMR-NB services by 20% to 65%, thereby lowering
transmission bandwidth lease costs and the total cost of ownership (TCO) for operators.
This feature applies only to AMR-NB services. When AMR-NB services are combined with
little or no PS services, more transmission bandwidth can be saved. If the number of
multiplexing speech frames is the same for different coding rates of AMR services, a lower
coding rate delivers greater transmission bandwidth reduction. The most transmission
bandwidth is saved when the AMR-NB services are coded at 4.75 kbit/s.

3 Technical Description

AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression reduces satellite transmission bandwidth over

the Iub interface only for AMR-NB services. Voice services in this document herein after are
referred to as AMR-NB voice services. For details about AMR speech coding rates, see AMR
Feature Parameter Description.
This feature is enabled by setting AMRTRANSBWCOMP to ON(On).
By multiplexing AMR speech payloads, this feature reduces the number of IP packet headers
and FP headers, saving transmission bandwidth. Without this feature, each AMR frame has
one IP packet header and one FP header. With this feature, multiplexed speech frames share
one IP packet header and one FP header. Figure 3-1 shows the formats before and after
multiplexing.

Figure 3-1 Packet format

The RNC and NodeB buffer and multiplex AMR speech frames for a user. Multiplexed
frames are sent out when either of the following conditions is met:
l The number of buffered speech frames is greater than or equal to the value of
IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910).
l The buffer duration is greater than or equal to the value of
IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910) multiplied by 20 (ms).
When enabled, this feature takes effect for newly admitted calls but not for ongoing calls.
When inter-RNC soft handover is performed, this feature does not support multiplexing
speech frames of radio links established over the Iur interface.

WRFD-050420 FP MUX for IP The single-user speech frame multiplexing

Transmission function provided by this feature employs
similar working principles as the FP MUX for
IP Transmission feature. Compared with FP
MUX for IP Transmission, single-user speech
frame multiplexing multiplexes the packets of a
single user, reducing user information in
packets and improving transmission efficiency.
When the single-user speech frame
multiplexing function is enabled, the FP MUX
for IP Transmission feature provides
insignificant gains. The FP MUX for IP
Transmission feature also increases the delay
and jitter of sending packets. To avoid these
problems, you are advised not to
simultaneously enable the single-user speech
frame multiplexing function and the FP MUX
for IP Transmission feature.

N/A IP performance Transmission link maintenance and detection

monitoring functions occupy transmission bandwidths. You
are advised not to simultaneously enable the
AMR Transmission Bandwidth Compression
feature and the IP performance monitoring
(IPPM) function.

WRFD-190208 Crystal Voice When the Crystal Voice Coverage Improvement

Coverage by Rate Adaption feature is enabled, the RNC
Improvement by Rate reconfigures RBs for UEs to adjust UEs' voice
Adaption rates in the event of coverage changes. When
both this feature and the Crystal Voice
Coverage Improvement by Rate Adaption
feature are enabled, the RNC and NodeB will
discard the buffered AMR speech frames due to
RB reconfiguration, causing the voice quality to
deteriorate.

WRFD-020503 Outer Loop Power When the AMR Transmission Bandwidth

Control Compression feature is enabled, the NodeB
buffers the voice data received over the Uu
interface and delays sending the voice data to
the RNC. Consequently, the RNC cannot obtain
the current Uu transmission status for outer
loop power control. In this scenario, the number
of error TBs and the BLER increase for voice
services.

Parameter Description 5 Network Impact

5 Network Impact

System Capacity
No impact.

Network Performance
l For Iub over IP transmission, this feature can reduce the IP-layer transmission bandwidth
over the Iub interface by 20% to 65%. For Iub over ATM transmission, the ATM-layer
transmission bandwidth is reduced by 5% to 25%. A larger value of
IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910) or a smaller value of AMR
speech coding rate indicates more gains. A smaller value of
IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910) or a larger value of AMR speech
coding rate indicates fewer gains.
l Single-user speech frame multiplexing increases speech frame delay by as much as 200
ms (one-way). A larger value of IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910)
indicates longer delay. In case of packet loss or jitter, voice quality will be seriously
affected, compromising user experience.
l This feature can reduce the number of packets transmitted over the Iub interface.
Consequently, values returned by counters listed in Table 5-1 decrease.

6 Engineering Guidelines

6.1 When to Use AMR Transmission Bandwidth

Compression
Use this feature when the ratio of AMR-NB services to voice services is greater than 90% in
all cells served by a NodeB, the Iub interface uses satellite transmission, and the transmission
network meets the QoS requirements listed in Table 6-1.

Table 6-1 QoS requirements on the satellite transmission network

satellite transmission

In satellite transmission scenarios, the following configurations are recommended to

maximize gains provided by this feature.
l Enable the UDP header compression function for satellite devices to further save
transmission bandwidth.
l Configure the length of packets encapsulated in the inbound direction according to the
following formula:
Length of packets encapsulated in the inbound direction Average length of IP packets
sent by the NodeB IP/UDP header length saved by compression
where
Average length of IP packets sent by the NodeB = VS.IP.TxBytes/

The IP/UDP header length is 28 bytes. The IP/UDP header length after compression
is determined by satellite devices.

6.2 Required Information

l On the RNC side, collect the number of Erlangs for calculating the ratio of AMR-NB
services to voice services in the cell to evaluate whether this feature needs to be enabled.
The proportion of AMR-NB services = (1
VS.RAB.AMRWB.Erlang.cell(BSC6900,BSC6910)/
VS.RAB.AMR.Erlang.cell(BSC6900,BSC6910)) x 100%
l On the RNC side, collect the following performance counters to evaluate the gains after
feature activation.
VS.SRNCIubBytesAMR.TransportNetwork.Rx(BSC6900,BSC6910)
VS.SRNCIubBytesAMR.TransportNetwork.Tx(BSC6900,BSC6910)
l Collect counters related to the number of packets and bytes transmitted over the Iub
interface to evaluate the feature impact. For details about counters to be collected, see
Table 6-2.

If RAN Sharing or MOCN is enabled, the licensed value is allocated among the primary and
secondary operators according to the value of the License Allocation for Multiple
Operators parameter.

Method 1: It is recommended that the license allocation proportion of a feature be consistent

with that of the capacity license item "Voice Erlang-Erlang". The licensed values can be set by
running the RNC MML command SET LICENSE. If the FeatureResAssignMode parameter
in this command is set to AutoAssign, the licensed values are automatically allocated among
the primary and secondary operators. If the FeatureResAssignMode parameter in this
command is set to ManualAssign, you need to specify the related license parameters to
implement manual license allocation.

6.3.2 Precautions
The WBBPa board does not support single-user speech frame multiplexing. When the NodeB
configured with the WBBPa board initiates softer handover for an UE, soft handover links
instead of softer handover links are established. Therefore, the WBBPa board cannot obtain
the maximum ratio combining gains provided by softer handovers.

6.5 Parameter Optimization

l When packet loss rate is high and jitter is serious on the transport network or voice
service quality needs to be improved, you are advised to reduce the value of the
IubUserAMRFrameMuxNumber(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter.
l To save more transmission bandwidth, your are advised to perform the following
parameter optimizations:
Delete scheduled tasks from the U2000, cancel the subscription to unnecessary
performance counters, and perform minimum possible operation and maintenance
operations.
Set the HBINTER(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter on both the RNC side and the
NodeB side to their respective maximum value to reduce the traffic on the SCTP
link.
