Progressivism focuses on the child
rather than the subject matter.
The students interests are
important; integrating thinking,
feeling, and doing is important.
Learners should be active and
learn to solve problems by
reflecting on their experience. The
school should help students
develop personal and social values.
Because society is always changing,
new ideas are important to make
the future better than the past.
Influential progressivists include
John Dewey and Francis Parker.
After reading John Deweys book and discussing
his thoughts and ideas in class, one can see John
Dewey's relationship to progressivism. He wanted
students to learn through action and being
involved in the processes that will get to the end
product. He wanted the students to work on
hands-on projects so learning would take place,
rather than memorization. In a regular classroom
students just memorize what they need to know
and it goes away after the test. In Deweys mind,
the students would have to exercise their brain by
problem solving and thinking critically, resulting in
learning (even though the students may not even
know it!). This allows the individual's brain to
develop, so as the individual grows learning
becomes easier! After attending a school Dewey
would have set up, a child would be ready for the
real world and a lot of the everyday setbacks that
an individual would experience, such as losing a
button, changing a tire, making lunch, or
balancing a checkbook. School would be a lot of
hands-on learning, and the progression of
education would not end!

What I Learned

In the exercise I have learned I am more or a progressivism teacher than a

sentialism teacher. I believe this is so true. I love to learn with my hands and
believe it is easier than through a lecture. Discipline and hard work and
respect for authority is important, but I believe that should be from a parents
view to help motivate the child. As well for I will help them come together to
make them want to learn. For my future students we will be doing a lot of
hand on projects. You use your hands everyday so why not see what they can
do? This will help my teaching style and students learning style. I doubt it
matches the CCSD intake for teaching but I will show them there are more
ways to learn then through a paper and ears.
