Considerate Constructors Scheme

Site Managers Guide

Started in 1997, the Considerate Constructors
Scheme was set up by the UK construction
industry to improve its image.
The Scheme is a non-profit-making, independent organisation
founded by the industry and recommended by local
authorities and the Government. The Scheme is neither grant
maintained, nor funded by the Government, and is solely
financed by its registrations.

Every year the Scheme registers and monitors thousands of

UK sites, companies and suppliers, and has been instrumental
in many of the improvements enjoyed today.

Considerate Constructors Scheme Site Managers Guide | 1

Purpose of this guide
The purpose of this guide is to inform site managers
of the Schemes requirements, including how to adhere
to the Code of Considerate Practice and the site
monitoring process. This guide will also explain how
your site will be scored and provides information on the
annual National Site Awards.

Our aim:
Improving the image of construction
Why?
The construction industry has a huge impact on all
our lives, with many construction sites in sensitive
locations. If all sites presented an image of
competent management, efficiency, awareness of
environmental issues and above all neighbourliness,
then every site would become a positive
advertisement, not just for itself but for the
industry as a whole.

What?
The Code of Considerate Practice commits those
sites registered with the Scheme to care about
appearance, respect the community, protect the
environment, secure everyone's safety and value
their workforce.

Where?
Construction sites operating within the UK can
register with the Scheme.

Who?
The Scheme is open to construction sites of all types
and size and for every type of construction activity,
with many construction companies and clients
automatically registering all their sites as company
policy.

How?
Through the monitoring of registered sites and the
displaying of posters around the site, promoting
registration with the Scheme. If passers-by wish to
comment, the name and telephone number of the
site manager is clearly displayed, alongside the
freephone telephone number of the Schemes
administration office.
Code of Considerate Practice

construction industry by striving to promote and achieve best
practice under this Code. They will:

Site Registration Pack
Registered sites will be sent a Site Registration Pack
containing Scheme documentation and signage which
must be displayed in accordance with the Schemes
requirements. Included in this documentation is a site
manager check sheet and site managers are advised to
read this first. This check sheet details the documents
provided in this pack along with an explanation of
what each item is.

After reviewing the items on the check sheet, the site

manager should then read the section 'What to do
now'. This section provides guidance for a registered
site on what the initial steps are now that the
documentation and signage have been received.

The check sheet then outlines when the registered

site can expect its first site visit from a Scheme
Monitor to assess compliance against the Code of
