Protest against Gross Violation of Human Rights and Rule of

Law, Political Repression, and State Terrorism by Present

Awami League Regime in Bangladesh
Over the last couple of years Bangladesh has been gradually slipping into authoritarianism and mob
rule sponsored by current government. Dismantling freedom and rule of law, violation of human rights
and removal of mechanisms of public security have become the norm of the day. Suppression of free
media and persecution of political opponents and state terrorism by government machinery have
become the order of time.
The present regime of Awami League is brutally suppressing the political opposition. The leaders and
activists of the opposition parties are being harassed by government supporters and security forces.
Many of the leaders including the top leadership of Bangladesh Jamaat-i-Islami has been arrested in
concocted cases and put into police remand. Those in remand are deprived of their minimal civic and
constitutional rights. They have put through inhumane torture in police custody. Opposition leaders
were attacked in the street by security forces and government party supporters. Plain clothes security
officials are arresting people without any due legal process and causing them to disappear.

The government has shut down TV channels and newspapers critical of its unlawful activities. Channel
1, Jamuna TV and Daily Amardesh’s declarations were revoked. Amardesh editor Mr. Mahmudur
Rahman was arrested in some concocted case and has been undergoing torture in police custody in the
pretext of remand. TV channels were forced to stop popular talk shows critical of government actions.
Government is using its security apparatus to terrorize the population of the population. They are
creating an atmosphere in which people feel insecure. Government party activists are attacking
ordinary people and political opposition in various parts of the country. Government sponsored student
organization “Bangladesh Chhatra Leauge” has destroyed the educational environment of Bangladeshi
college/university campuses. Along with the persecution of opposition student supporters, Chhatra
League activists got involved in intra party conflict in which many students were killed.
No segment of Bangladeshi society – women, children, religious people, homeless, students,
businessmen, university professors, public servants even police officers – are safe from Awami
brutality today. That is why it is time that as a concern Bangladeshi you should wake up and join a
protest rally in front of the United Nations.
