Procedures for
Students
Work Requirements

Students will always follow directions for completing the assignment

or activity. Each student is responsible for completing and turning in
his or her work in the appropriate bin. When working in pairs or
groups, the students will know the correct volume because it will be
displayed at the front of the room.

4
Absenteeism

There will be an absent folder on the students desk with missing work.
I will have a pre-made note which welcomes the student back and gives
well wishes. It will also indicate the due date for the work. The student
will return the work in the absent folder to the homework bin in the
classroom.

5
Notes from Home

There will be a dropbox bin on my desk for notes, messages, or

papers from home. I will set a time during the day to look at the
correspondence. I will send a simple reply note with the student in the
behavior folder if necessary. If the reply is more detailed, I will send
an email or make a phone call.

6
Tardiness

The student will need to go by the office before coming to class for a
tardy slip. There will be a bin by the classroom door for tardy slips.
The student will be expected to come into class quietly, get any
necessary supplies together and jump into the lesson.

7
Unfinished Class Assignments

The students will have a WIP (Work in progress) folder at their desk.
Unfinished work will be put in the folder. At the end of the week, we
will have ketchup and pickles. This is where the students will have
time to finish the work or free pick from the Im finished now what
chart.

Procedures for the
Classroom
Beginning of Class

There will be soothing music (instrumental only) playing. I will greet

students at the door. The student will get the take-home folder out of
his or her backpack, and turn in any homework into the homework bin.
The student will decide on lunch. The student will return to the seat
and start free exploration with a table tub (used for fine motor skills)
until we move to the carpet for reading aloud.

10
All Transitions

There will be a visual schedule every day. Toward the end of a lesson,
I will make it clear how much time is left before it needs to be wrapped
up. There will be a visual timer either on the smartboard or a sand
timer. I will inform the students about our next task. Before we move
into the next subject, we will have a movement activity or sing a song
with movement.

11
Getting Students Attention

I will choose one of several chants to get students attention: Shark

Bait Ooh ha ha, Class Class yes yes, Flat tire Shhh! I will also
use a clap and have the students copy me. Lastly, I will have a few
pom-pom turtles for quiet turtle. I will remind the students that the
turtles will only come out if it is quiet. I will place one on the desk of
the quietest student. The rule is no one can touch the turtle except that
student. I will have 3 of these little turtles to place on desks. Every
few minutes the student will pick another quite student and place the
turtle on his or her desk without talking.

12
Collecting and Returning Papers

Students will be instructed where to put finished assignments. Graded

papers will be sorted by the student with the job of mailman. He or she
will place all papers going home in the corresponding individuals
mailbox. Students will pick up all mail once a day. Students will
have a class number. I will call students by number to get any mailbox
items during the getting ready to go home time.

13
Replacing Dull or Broken Pencils

There will be two jars of pencils. One will be labeled sharp the other
will be dull or broken. Each morning I will sharpen all the dull or
broken pencils from the prior day. When a student needs a sharpened
pencil, he or she will walk over and place the dull or broken pencil in
the corresponding jar. After, the student will take a sharpened pencil.

Instruction
Collaborative Group Work

I will let the students know we will have preassigned groups for this
assignment. I will call out the groups and direct them to where they
should relocate. Before they start working, I will let them know there
will be a timer with a two minute warning. This two minute warning is
for wrapping up the lesson, picking up and returning supplies, and
returning to their normal seat. At the end of the timer, I will clap twice
indicating everyone should be back in their seats. Group members will
know each student has a responsibility in the group, and the assignment
is meant to be worked together. They should try to answer questions
among the group, but I am available for questions if no one knows the
answer.

16
Cultivating Social Skills

I will model appropriate social skills in the classroom. I will

incorporate a social skill into the lesson plans each week. On Monday,
we will role play great social skills. We will go over the qualities
necessary to master the social skill. Some of the skills we will work on
are listening, good manners, helping others, sharing, being respectful,
cooperative, patient, courteous, and polite.

17
What to Do When Done with Work

There will be a wall chart which indicates the options for students when
they quickly finish the lesson. The options will be interchangeable, but
the first option will always be to complete unfinished work. The
student must work his or her way down the chart.

18
Read Any Place Time

We will have read any place time (RAP Time) 15 minutes per day at
10:00am. The students will have the choice of where to sit in the
classroom. I will have a reading nook, cushions, and other seating
options to make it fun. The requirement is they are at least an arms
length away from any other students, and it will be silent reading.

19
Class Discussions

There will be craft sticks with each students name in a container. The
students will be instructed to wait quietly until his or her name is pulled
from the container. The student will then proceed to answer. The other
students will sit quietly and listen to the answer. They are not allowed
to say negative comments like no, wrong, or name calling. This will
ensure the classroom is a safe environment for all the students. Once a
name has been pulled, I will put the stick back in the container upside
down. This will prevent students from thinking he or she will not be
called on again. I will know which students have been pulled because
of the orientation of the stick. At the end of the discussion I will thank
the students for great participation.

Procedures for Teacher
Student Feedback

Each time I give feedback, I will say something I like about the
students work. I will say something about what the student needs to
work on to improve. Lastly, I will say something to correct about the
work being graded.

22
New Student Orientation

I will have several extra copies of the handouts from the first few days
of school. Some of the handouts will include a list of required supplies,
rules and procedures. It will also have some forms for the students
parent or guardian to fill out. I will have a new student buddy ready to
introduce the new student to important places around the classroom.
This will allow the new student to know at least one student in class.

23
Home and School Connection

I will have a weekly newsletter. It will include course material being

covered during the upcoming week, important dates, and reminders for
parents. I will also have a class website. Parents will be able to see
pictures of the students learning as well as the information from the
class newsletter. Once a month, the class will work together to make a
blog post on the class website. Parents will be able to email or leave a
voicemail. They will be informed I will reply or return the phone call
within 24 hours.

24
Technology in the Classroom

I will have a student safety pledge for the technology available to use in
the classroom. Students and parents will both need to sign it. The
pledge will include never to give out personal information like name,
phone number, or address. It will state to not give out passwords, fill
out any forms or send pictures. I will have a parent waiver which will
be signed before the student may go online. It will state the technology
available to use in the classroom, and the school or district are not
responsible for any harm directly or indirectly experienced by the use
of technology. The students will know going online is a privilege and
requires trust. It can be revoked if there is any misuse of the
technology. I will monitor technology use in the classroom.

25
Parent-Volunteers

I will send home a letter which will let all parents know they are
welcome in the classroom. I will create a volunteer sign up on
signup.com. This will allow me to have in-class volunteers with pre-
assigned duties, but also parents to volunteer supplies. After a parent
has volunteered, I will have a small appreciation gift and note.

26
Substitute Teacher Handbook

I will have a substitute teacher handbook. It

will include a welcome letter which thanks the
substitute, has my contact information, and
informs him or her that students should still
follow all rules and procedures for class. It
will have the class roster and seating chart.
There will be a brief page about the students.
It will include any students who may need to
be monitored more closely and ADHD/ADD
students. I will include a list of students who
may be taken out of the class by another
educator for supplemental reasons. I will
have a detailed page about dismissal
procedures. The substitute will know exactly
which students are dismissed to daycare, the
bus, or parent pick up. The daily schedule
will be included as well as the lesson plans for
the day. If it is an emergency teacher out day,
there will always be a page indicating where
the lesson plans are located. The class
procedures and rules will be in the binder. I
will have nurse and office forms in a labeled
pocket. There will be some blank pages for
the substitute to write notes about the day.
