HMS MISSION

To create and nurture a diverse community of the best people

committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease.
DEAN'S OVERVIEW

Harvard Medical Schools Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership program (SQIL) offers an exclusive opportunity to explore the cornerstones of high-
quality healthcare. It is an intensive one-year certificate program designed to develop knowledge and skills in the science and implementation of safety and
quality programs in a hospital setting, the fundamental premise of the Institute of Medicines Learning Health System concept.

The exposure to top Harvard faculty and clinical experts and administrative leaders from our Harvard-affiliated hospitals, including the Massachusetts
General Hospital, the Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Childrens Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Joslin Clinic, and the Brigham and
Womens Hospital make this a unique program. But thats not all. Two of our three program directors, Professor Friedman and Professor Sheikh, from the
University of Michigan and Edinburgh University, respectively, provide this program with a global perspective that enriches the experience for all students.
Best practices and pragmatic solutions from different parts of the world are showcased. Students interact and learn from each other.

Our pedagogic model of hybrid education provides learning ideally suited to the busy professional. It allows you to learn while still working.

We anticipate that graduating students will acquire many of the skills required to take their organization to a new level of performance. Indeed, we expect
graduates to become leaders in quality, safety and informatics.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

SQILs blended-learning style combines interactive web-based learning with face-to-face, team- and individual-based teaching methods. All instructional
materials are prerecorded and available online, making this a truly global and continuously available virtual classroom. During each workshop, which
complements the online learning activities, students will interact with Harvard-based faculty and instructors from other leading institutions and learn or
improve integral skills like critical thinking, team-building and problem solving.

The program curriculum is comprised of approximately 15 interactive webinar lectures and 30 recorded online lectures of 45 minutes in each area, patient
safety, quality and informatics, with an ongoing focus on leadership. The webinars and lectures are supported by the three workshops, involving case
discussions around the Learning Health System, implementing change in the skills development setting of a simulation center, and learning how to
integrate quality, safety and informatics into the healthcare delivery environment.

During the programs final phase, participants will be expected to develop and present a capstone project, which will demonstrate a strategy for measurable
improvement in an area that addresses patient safety, quality or informatics. All participants who achieve the program objectives are granted a certificate
of completion, and will be eligible to become associate members of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard University Alumni Association.

The SQIL curriculum will enable participants to:

Understand the scientific underpinnings of patient safety, healthcare quality and clinical informatics
Develop leadership skills, focused on implementing change
Address quality and safety issues in a clinical context using a case-based approach
Organize, write and potentially implement a proposal for a safety, quality and informatics project relevant to their clinical setting.

CORE CURRICULUM

SQILs core curriculum is divided into four components: quality improvement, patient safety, health informatics and leadership. The curriculum is delivered
through the live webinars and recorded online lectures, and is anchored by the three workshops which will concentrate on elements of the Learning
Health System. A common thread in the SQIL program is an emphasis on the Institute of Medicines concept of the Learning Health System. This
concept is designed to generate and apply the best evidence for the collaborative healthcare choices of each patient and provider, to drive the process
of discovery as a natural outgrowth of patient care, and to ensure innovation, quality, safety, and value. Science, informatics, incentives and culture are
aligned for continuous improvement and innovation, with best practices seamlessly embedded in the delivery process, and new knowledge captured as
an integral by-product of the delivery experience.

Patient Safety Informatics

-Understanding the epidemiology, causes and consequences -Using clinical decision support to enhance quality and safety
of medical errors -Utilizing databases and data mining
-Strategies to reduce iatrogenic harm
Quality Leadership
-Measuring quality in clinical practice -Implementing change in healthcare
-Engaging frontline staff in improving quality -Assessing organizational structures and priorities

PROGRAM OUTLINE
This program has a course design that combines traditional, face-to-face class time with online and out-of-class course work. In addition to the workshop
learning, there are approximately 50 didactic recorded online lectures and approximately 10 interactive webinars. Students work in teams and participate in 3
team assignments over the course of the year as well as working on an individual capstone project in the second half of the year.

WORKSHOPS
MAY 19th - 21st, 2017
The first workshop takes place in London, UK. It includes sessions on the principles of patient safety, potential errors and corrective action, performance
improvement models, performance measurement and analytics, and choosing targets for quality improvement intervention. During this workshop, SQIL
participants will be organized into their working teams for the entire 12-month program.

NOVEMBER 11th - 14th, 2017

The second workshop takes place at the Harvard Center in Shanghai, China and focuses on the principles of quality improvement and safety, and importance
of teamwork and team leadership.

MAY 10th - 13th, 2018

The third and final workshop takes place at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. Sessions will focus on leadership in healthcare, using examples of learning
health systems, and strategies for long-term sustainment and feasibility. The workshop will include sessions in a simulation center to replicate operating room,
emergency room and ward-based situations. At the workshops conclusion, each student receives a certificate of completion.

TESTIMONIALS

"SQIL provides an unrivaled opportunity for those interested in health policy, management, service delivery and/or research
to learn from and engage with world-class faculty in safety, quality and informatics. Students will emerge with the insights,
skills and network needed to lead and contribute to building the next generation health systems."
Charles Safran, MD, MS, FACMI
Professor of Medicine
Harvard Medical School
Chief, Division of Clinical Informatics
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Boston, Massachusetts, USA

"SQIL has been invaluable to me as a physician leader. Quality and safety are the new holy grail for healthcare. Until now
I have been lost in the acronym soup of meeting with nursing managers and others who have masters degrees in these
topics. SQIL has put me in the conversation and on equal footing with non-physician managers and directors when it
comes to the use of technology and strategies to improve quality and patient safety."
Jim Keany, MD
Associate Director, Emergency Services
Mission Hospital Regional Medical and Trauma Center
Viejo, California, USA

"The SQIL course is an assemblage of professionals from all over the world which make the workshops ideal for students to
network professionally and socially and to learn from each others experiences of working in different healthcare systems.
While a great deal of insight is gained from course faculty, even more comes from the exchange of ideas with fellow
students."
Nairah Rasul-Syed, MBChB
Specialist in Family Medicine
Health Point Hospital, Mubadala Healthcare

"The SQIL program attracts a truly international cohort of highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals from diverse
backgrounds of proven prior success. Already a variety of spin-off projects and partnerships have commenced among
program alumni and I expect that these relationships will continue long-term and produce some real game-changing
innovations."
