Goal: Learn/practice expressions for opening and closing a conversation
Objectives:

Activity 1: 2.1 Pre-Stage:

1. Ask SS to recall their first date with someone and what T-SS 5
they did before/when meeting the person (e.g., get
yourself clean, put on a smile, arrive on time, show an
interest in your date, look for things you have in
common, ask for a second date)
2. Why do we go to the trouble to do all these things?

3. Direct SS attention to the collocation ! MAKE a good
first impression
4. Link to more situations in which people have to make a
good first impression ! a job interview ! a business
seminar (professional training seminar)
5. In pairs, SS discuss what they would do to make a good S-S 5
first impression at a business seminar
6. Discuss as a class and compare SS answers to the list T-SS 5
(p. 16)
7. Go over the list and teach vocabulary
-dress appropriately/formally/casually/warmly
-punctual = on time
-courteous = very polite
-effectively = producing a desired result ! learning
English at TC

2.2. During Stage: T-SS 2

Now were gonna listen two conversations at a business


seminar and lets find out if people in the conversations
actually follow the points on the list

1. 1st listening for main ideas (no note-taking) Is it easy or 5


difficult? How much can you understand?

2. 2nd listening and check the list (key words), only first 5
conversation
-courteous, positive (Its a pleasure to meet you)
-names (Colin, Paola)
-showing interests (That sounds interesting)
-knowing what to say (talking about their jobs only)
-follow-up (Let me give you my card/Lets stay in
touch)

3. Go over the formulaic expressions for opening and 5


closing conversations (p. 16)
-discuss register and degrees of formality
-formal/distance (avoid using pronouns like I and YOU)
vs. casual/warm
-nice to meet you vs. nice meeting you
-Thanks for you time ! ONLY in a business setting
4. 3rd listening for the expressions for opening and closing
conversations (check/circle the expression if you hear it)

2.3 Post-Stage:

1. Ask SS to select 4 expressions for opening and closing a 15


conversation, two (formal and informal) for each
function, write them down on a post-it note
2. Have SS stand in two lines, facing each other
3. Demo (Halloween party)
4. Give SS a scenario (someones birthday party, a
business seminar, a job fair, first day of school)
5. SS talk to a partner for 1 min using the chosen S-S
expressions and then change partners
6. SS go back to their seats and each shares the expressions T-SS 3
she just used
7. Go over the vocabulary they have difficulty
pronouncing
