Project Reflection Paper

Andrew Fuller

I chose to write my project on immigrant labor. This is a pretty heavily debated

subject in our nation right now due to the recent publicity it has been getting due to

President Trump. Its an important issue, one that deserves much needed attention in

order to begin to solve it. I feel that I learned so much from this research paper and it

helped be open my understanding to the complexity of the issue. It helped me

understand the real facts behind what is happening with legal and illegal immigrant

labor.

What are the strengths of your paper? Since this is a heated subject in the

United States right now, I was able to find a plethora of information regarding statistics,

facts, studies, and observations made about immigration. I could go to any respected

newspaper organization, like the New York Times, CNN, or Fox News to try and get the

most information I could. When researching, I tried to find the most politically neutral

stories and facts as possible. This helped as I didnt need to deal with political bias.

Newspapers became a good source of knowledge because they often had completed

studies or surveys that had the ability to shed light on what was really happening.

Another good resource was the Migration Policy Institute, an organization wholly

devoted to the subject of immigrants. They compiled data from the United States

Census in order to track how many immigrants lived within the country, and how many
were illegal. It also shared information such as job status, description of family members

and how many generations they had been in the United States.

What challenges did you face in completing the paper and how did you

address them? The biggest challenge I had was deciding how I would phrase all of the

information that I had found. It was difficult organizing all of the information in a manner

that made sense and that would flow from subject to subject. It became hard to explain

how these facts all related to each other and how they were all linked together to help

us understand the issue more fully and on a deeper level. For example, I would ask

myself, how does illegal immigrant labor relate to the family situation of those

immigrants working here? As I did this though, I found it easier to step into the shoes of

an immigrant, and it became easier to understand what one of them may go through. I

have become more empathetic towards them and willing to allow them to do whatever

they need to, to accomplish their dreams.

Explain the most important insights you had while writing the paper. I had a

few ah-ha moments. Particularly when I began forming my opinion on whether or not I

supported immigrant labor or I didnt. I came to a conclusion with two parts. I support

immigrant labor wholeheartedly when immigrants have taken steps to work legally

within the United States, whether that be through a green card, work visa, or as citizens.

They have the right to all the same opportunity as us, natural born Americans. But, I do

not support immigrants working illegally.

I also came to understand that when dealing with subjects like these, its

important that we take them step by step and on an individual basis. We as Americans
have been very successful in business, and should share the how to with them in

order to create more innovation and productivity. It is worth it. This was overall a great

opportunity for me to learn more about a heated topic and its importance in business,

and how to deal with it morally and ethically. Thank You.
