To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the
affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure
the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or
a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier

Bright Ideas
Award
Mr. Matt Cottone
Van Hoosen Middle School World Studies Teacher
Rochester Community Schools is fortunate to have outstanding educators and at Van Hoosen
Middle School one who goes above & beyond and exceeds our expectations is Mr. Matt Cottone.
Mr Cottone is a think outside-the-box, innovative, creative, bright ideas teacher who created an
amazing Bright Idea event at Van Hoosen for the entire 7th gradeGREEK WEEK.
Mr. Cottone took the Greek World Studies curriculum and came up with the bright idea that for an
entire week in every single 7th grade class, students would learn about Greece and the Greeks,
relevant to every one of their subjects. Mr. Cottone sold his bright idea to all the other 7th grade
department teachers and made it happen. In band, the students learned Greek music. In Math
and Science, students learned about influential Greek mathematicians and scientists and their
impact on our world. In Design and Technology class, the students constructed full size Greek
chariots. In art, students studied Greek artists and their importance. In Language Arts, students
examined Greek literature. In World Studies the students learned about Greek culture and
architecture. Mr. Cottone even persuaded the Chartwells Food Service employees to participate.
They visited his class and discussed Greek food and even made sure Greek dishes were on the
cafeteria menu during Greek Week. Had Mr. Cottone convinced the custodian at Van Hoosen to
wear a toga, everyone would have been in on the action!
All the learning throughout the week culminated on Friday with an entire day of festivities and
activities: Greek music performed by the 7th grade band, watching the movie Hercules, Greek
cultural presentations, and an afternoon of Olympic Games which included stations with Greek
dancing, Greek literary theater, chariot races, a science Olympiad event, and classic Olympic track
and field events. Mr. Cottone created and directed the entire bright idea. He organized meetings,
sparked creative thinking, and navigated tricky logistics.
As a member of the Van Hoosen PTSA and a huge supporter, Mr. Cottone invited input and
involvement from the PTSA. Parents had the opportunity to be event assistants. It was a
collaborative Van Hoosen community effort all to the benefit of the 7th graders!
This entire week positively impacted the students learning. Mr. Cottone took a normal curriculum
unit and with his bright idea, made the unit exciting, memorable and fun for every one of the 7th
graders at Van Hoosen Middle School. Mr. Cottone is at it again this year... Latin American Week for
the entire 6th grade muy excelente! What an outstanding teacher! Mr. Cottone is well deserving
of this Bright Ideas Award!

Monika Babiak
Monika Babiak was selected for her amazing work as Chairperson of the District Reflections
Program (a National PTA art program) in addition to all of the other committees she is engaged in
at University Hills, West Middle School and in our community.
Monika chaired the district Reflections committee for three years. During that time she improved
and streamlined the program and awards ceremony. She implemented a digital participation form,
made sure 100% of our schools participate, and increased the number of entries from 900 to 1500
- an astonishing 60% increase. Monika implemented a year-end survey and through her dedication
and hard work, Rochester was designated as Michigans Model for how to execute a district
Reflections program. She was asked to administer the State Program as well as become a National
Delegate. Monika is quick to overcome challenges and promote positive changes. She increased
communications within the schools, district and state. She works to create a team by meeting
with chairs from each building to explain changes, answer questions and utilize the teams time
and talents. Monika enforced blind judging rules and created a list of approved judges to assist
local school entries and ensure a proper scoring process. Her work on improving the Reflections
process enhanced the changes she made to the awards ceremony. Our district ceremony grew so
much that the location moved to a larger venue. Monika implemented a digital format so art-work
is projected during the ceremony. In addition she added a Mayors Choice award that is displayed
at city hall. Monika invites the judges to the ceremony, as well as many community members, to
increase involvement and overall awareness in the Reflections program.
Monika chaired or participated on many committees at University Hills and West. There are too
many to list, but the highlights include chairing Reflections at both schools, where she increased
the number of entries at U Hills by 300% in her two years chairing their program, and increased
Wests participation by 40%. Monika has also served as Vice President of Committees for U Hills for
two years.
Being involved in the community is something that drives Monika . Her dedication to the
community and her family made her a definite choice for the 2010 Mayors Families First Award. Her
other remarkable volunteer endeavors include: Beaumont Parenting Volunteer, Forgotten Harvest,
Moms in Prayer Group Leader, Blessings in a Backpack, St. Judes Childrens Hospital, Habitat for
Humanity, and an overseas program for service personnel.
The district is fortunate to have Monika around ... we know that if she is in charge, the program
will succeed. She is always willing to listen to others and look at ways to improve any program.
Monika Babiak is a phenomenal asset to our district and very deserving of our Council Member of
the Year Award.

Lisa Wattai
Lisa Wattai is the kind of leader everyone wishes they had at their school. Over the past three
years at Van Hoosen, Lisa has served as Secretary for one year and President for the last two years.
On top of her busy duties as President, she always steps in to lend a hand to whichever committee

Eighth Grade Farewell, Staff Appreciation or Founders Day. Lisa worked tirelessly to research the
implementation of iPads in the classroom. She attended workshops, visited a Troy Elementary
School, and created a video presentation to present to the PTSA body which shows how computer
applications can further enhance student learning.
In addition to her duties at Van Hoosen, Lisa has been a driving force in keeping the Authors in

steps forward and goes the extra mile by volunteering to do such things as the inaugural scavenger

Positive Behavior Committee. Oh, and throw-in Room Mom, Fun Run & Media Center helper.
Because shes not busy enough, Lisa volunteered to serve on the District Strategic Planning
Committee AND a 5th / 6th grade Advanced Placement process Committee. Her attendance &
parent representation at all of these meetings ensures future students of Rochester Community
Schools continue to receive an excellent education.
Lisa has such a positive energy force and she brings out the best in everyone she works with
which in turn creates better leaders to those in her wake. Her welcoming spirit encourages others
to join a group, a committee, a Board, or just participate and consider a future leadership role.
Her extraordinary years of service not only at the school level, but at the Community level, will
positively affect many families in the years to come.
Lisa attributes her passion for education to her parents who were both teachers for a zillion years
and her drive comes from the smiles on her childrens faces when they talk about all the wonderful
things that happen at school. She thanks her husband of 24 years, John, and her amazing kids
Michael (8th grade) and Peter (4th grade). Lisa is quoted as saying, [Being a mom & helping PTA is]
the Best career ever, hands down! [It sure] beats designing engine seals and managing a bunch of
engineers!
We imagine those co-workers had their hands FULL with Lisas excitement and contagious energy!
WERE lucky to have HER as part of our team!
Unless someone like you cares a whole, awful lot.
Things arent going to get better, theyre NOT!

Rochester Community Council

Advocate, Communicate, Support

Did You Know?

Founders Day is a reminder of the substantial role that PTA has played locally, regionally, and
nationally in supporting parent involvement and working on behalf of all children and families.
Its a time to reflect and take pride in our many accomplishments, and to renew our commitment to
be a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public
education.

How do we celebrate in Rochester Community Schools?

The PTA Council Founders Day Committee, along with representation from all 20 schools,
hosts a Founders Day Celebration with basket raffle. Each school recognizes three (3)
individual volunteers. There are also district level awards that an individual can be nominated for:
John Schultz Leadership Award, Distinguished Service Award, and Council Member of the Year Award.
An individual or a group can also be nominated for the Bright Ideas Award.

Each school in the district provides 2 baskets for the raffle, a representative for the District Founders
Day Committee and 2 volunteers to help with the event set up and tear down.

Where do the proceeds go?

Proceeds from event ticket sales and the basket raffle will support PTA Council Enrichment and
Scholarship Funds.
