WA 1.

1 Outlining Your Values and Interests

Your first assignment is to begin thinking about your interests and values,
and the kinds of issues about which you are curious. To that end, you will
generate several lists.

1. List at least ten of your personal values.


Ex. I value openness to others ideas.
Ex. I value and accept people who are different from
me.
Ex. I value good, affordable food.

1. I value diversity among societal norms.


2. I value hard work and dedication.
3. I value sacrifices and commitments.
4. I value family and relatives with the highest priority.
5. I value my faith very strongly because it shapes my morals and
values in life.
6. I value my friends and acquaintances in a respectful and
helpful manner.
7. I value life for it is the most precious thing to cherish in life
itself.
8. I value my school work because it is what will lead me down to
a successful life.
9. I value morals and ethics as they shape and define ones self.
10. I value money to an extent as its the only realistic way to
get anything in life.

2. List at least ten things in which you have a vested interest.


Ex. As a resident of Hawaii, I have a vested interest
in out-of-state tuition.
Ex. As a teacher of writing, I have a vested interest in
student literacy and success.
Ex. As a cyclist, I have a vested interest in bike lanes
and city planning.

1. As a musician, I have a vested interest in the evolution of music


and instruments.
2. As a student, I have a vested interest in the educational
resources a school has to offer.
3. As a resident of Phoenix, I have a vested interest in the global
awareness for pollution.
4. As a sibling, I have a vested interest in the support for those
who may not have it.
5. As a compassionate person, I have a vested interest in
everyones well being.
6. As a catholic, I have a vested interest in the evangelism needed
in places of suffering.
7. As a college student, I have a vested interest in the
responsibilities needed to succeed.
8. As an athlete, I have a vested interest in the physical health
globally, strictly for younger overweight children.
9. As a citizen, I have a vested interest in the protection of the
rights to our freedom.
10. As a employee, I have a vested interest in the values and
lessons customer service can teach an individual.

3. List 5-7 issues or controversies about which you are interested,


and briefly explain your interest in each issue or controversy that you
list.
Ex. Access to weapons. Im interested in
conversations about access to weapons, because my nephew
was a victim of an accidental domestic homicide.
Ex. Affordable education. Im interested in affordable
education, because so many American appear to lack access to
education, due primarily to the high costs of American colleges
and universities.
Ex. Abandoned lots in Phoenixs historic Garfield
neighborhoods. Im interested in abandoned lots because they
could be used to feed and provide green spaces for residents of
the neighborhood who live in a food desert and lack access to
green public spaces.

1. The legalization of abortion. As sensitive of a subject as it is,


Im interested in the conversations about abortion, because its
always quite interesting to see how both sides of the controversy
have to say to back up their logics.
2. Climate change. Im interested in climate change because I
have been able to tell from actual experience the climate change that
has been going on the past few years.
3. Assisted suicide, or euthanasia. Im interested in euthanasia
because Ive had a few relatives who did use euthanasia as a last
resort, and it was hard for me to grasp the of such a thing.
4. Illegal immigration. Im interested in illegal immigration
because I have actually a number of friends who are illegal
immigrants, and I feel they do deserve the right to to become U.S
citizens.
5. Minimum wage. Im interested in the different opinions on
minimum wage because of the recent increase of the minimum wage
here in Arizona.
