Chronic contagious Salivary Gland Swelling
conjunctivitis (eye disease)
HISTOLOGICAL
CHARACTERIZTION:
o Hyperplasia*
o Inflammatory granulation
on the conjunctival
epithelium surface
caused by the
bacteria
Chlamydia
trachomatis
form of pink eye
Presents with bilateral
keratoconjuctivitis*
Symptoms: tearing, discharge,
photophoboa*, pain, and
swelling of eyelids
Can cause eyelid deformities*
and turned-in eyelashes
(trichiasis) *
Complications:
o ulceration and infection
of the cornea
o loss of vision if scarring
occurs on the central part
of cornea
Inflammatory response:
invasion of lymphocytes and
macrophages on the underlying
CT
Diagnosis: Microbiology
laboratory testing
Treatment:
o Early stage: tetracycline eye
ointment or oral azithromycin
oLater stage: Surgery
(bilamellar tarsal rotation,
corneal transplantation,
epilation)
Prevention:
o Proper hygiene: Facial
hygiene, water
sanitation, fly control
o No vaccines
Sialadenitis
Blockage of duct or ducts
o Saliva is not able to exit
into the mouth
o Saliva backs up in the
duct, thus it swells
o Caused by Calculus
(salivary stone) salt
from saliva
o This may be filled with
stagnant saliva and may
cause bacterial infections
Symptoms:
o Pain in chewing
o Swelling, worsens before
meal time
o Tenderness, redness
o Ejection of small stone
o Fever, chills
Treatment
o Pushing away of stone
o Lithotripsy*
o Antibiotics
Prevention
o Oral hygiene
