pattern.Themostpopularsuchpatternsare45or90Herringbonepatterns.Onthispage,
diagramswillbeusedtoshowhowtosetupsuchpatterns.Aseparatepage showsaneat
trickforsettingupa45herringbonepattern.

90 Herringbone Pattern
Thisisthesimpleroftheherringbonepatternstosetup.Decideona"baseline"thatwill
bethestartofthepattern.Thisisusuallytakentobealinealongthemaindirectriopnof
traveloronethatisparalleloratrightanglestothehouseorotherbuilding.Ifthereisa
rightanglecorner,thesettingoutcanbebasedonthetwolines,asshowninthediagram
below.

Settingoutaperpendicular,iealineatexactly90tothebaseline,isdescribedonthe
settingout page.

Onasquareorrectangulararea,a90
herringbonepatterncanbeusedtokeepcutting
toaminimum.Onlyoneblockwidthin4needbe
cuttofit,andjudiciouspositioningofedge
coursescanensurethatthepavementisagiven
numberoffullbrickswide.
Itisbesttostartlayingtightagainstafixed
edge,suchasagainstanedgingcourse,butifthis

45 Herringbone Pattern

Thispatternisidenticaltothepatternabove,exceptthatithasbeenrotatedthrough45.It
canbesetoutexactlyasshownabove,byestablishingthebaselineat45andlayingthe
blockssquaretothisline.Alternatively,abaselinecanbesetupsquaretothework,andthe
blockslaidat45tothisline.Thissecondmethodmayatfirstseemcomplicated,butis
particularlyvaluableforensuringthatthealignmentisnotdriftingoutoftruewithsubsequent
coursesofblocks.

Whenestablishingthispattern,thebestvisualeffectisachievedbylayingtheblocksinsucha
mannerthatthe"chevrons"runalongtheprincipaldirectionoftrafficoralongthelengthof
thedriveway(logitudinal),ratherthanacross(transverse).

Withthispattern,mostoftheblocksattheedgeoftheworkwillneedtobecutatanangleto
fitin.Itisusualtolayallthefullbricksfirst,thenoncethesehavebeencheckedfor
alignment,theedgepiecescanbecutin.Leavingouttheedgepiecesallowsthebodyofthe
pavingtobeaccuratelyalignedBEFOREfasteninginthework.Inthefollowingdiagrams,the
bricksarethestandard200x100mmplansizeblocksmostcommonlyusedfordomestic
paving.

Byusingthisspacingof215mm,theamountofwastageon
cutblocksisminimised.

Settingupthefirstlineofblocks

Continuetolayasmanyfullblocksaspossibleandthencheckthealignment,usingapinch
barorpavior'smallto'nudge'blocksintoline.Oncethealignmentiscomplete,theedge
blockscanbecuttoshapeandfittedinpriortofinalsealing.

Completethedoublestartercourseasshown.Thisstarter
courseshouldbeaslongaspossible,toensureaccuracy Addfurthercourses,workingalongonecourseatatime

Usetautstringlinetocheckforaccuracyeveryfewcourses,andpreventthepatternfrom'drifting'.

pavingunits.Withflagstones,thisissometimesreferredtoasaDutchPattern .

Thiscombinationallowsdistinctivepatterningtobeachievedbymixingpaviorsofyour
choice.Youcanmixconcreteblockswithsmallconcreteflags/slabs,orclaypaviorswiththe
smallerclaycobbles.Eventhetraditional"3by2's"canbelaidinaherringbonepattern.The
possibilitiesareendless,thediagramsbelowshowafewpatternstosetyouthinking.
