INTRODUCTION
Recycling Elementary English is for students at elementary level who want to learn
general English. It also offers useful extra practice to those preparing for the Cambridge
Key English Test (KET). It can be used to supplement any coursebook at this level, and is
suitable for use in the classroom, for homework, or (in the case of the With Key edition)
for self-study.

GRAMMAR VOCABULARY
A VERB is a doing word, which tells you what is happening, what happened in the past,
or what will happen. It can be used in different forms, depending on the time of the
action and the number of people who are doing it:
I wrote a letter. She speaks very quietly. People were surprised.
A SENTENCE is a group of words with a working verb. Many English sentences have a
subject, verb and object:
The dog ate the biscuit.
An AUXILIARY VERB helps another verb to do its work. Auxiliary verbs are be (used to
make passive and continuous forms), have (used with the present perfect), and do (used
to make questions and negatives):
He was born in Paris. Have you seen her? I dont know the answer.
SINGULAR means only one of something. If the subject is singular, the verb is also
singular:
A boy was climbing the tree.
PLURAL means more than one of something. If the subject is plural, the verb is also
plural:
The paintings were very expensive.
6
G rammar vocabulary
A PREPOSITION is a small word used before a noun or pronoun to link it to the rest of
the sentence:
I went to London. We live near the school. The key is on the table.
A CLUE is anything which can help you to find the right answer. (Detectives use clues
to catch criminals!)

Nouns can be singular (only one), or plural (more than one), or uncountable

singular or plural, look for a clue to help you. If you see any of these clues, the
noun must be plural:
Before the noun After the noun
numbers {two, three, forty, a hundred) plural verb (are, were)
many, a few
these, those
To make the plural, we add -s to most English nouns:

UNIT 54
Past simple
We use the past simple to talk about completed actions at a fixed point in the past.
We often use dates or times, or words like yesterday, last, ago:
We walked to school yesterday. I saw him last week. We went there two
months ago.
Regular verbs have an -ed or a -d ending: She looked at me and I smiled at her.
These are some common irregular verbs: be ~ was / were, come ~ came,
do ~ did, drive ~ drove, fly ~ flew, give ~ gave, go ~ went, have ~ had, lose lost,
sit ~ sat see ~ saw, spend ~ spent, take ~ took, write ~ wrote
(See Unit 69 and page 144 for more irregular verbs.)
We make past simple questions with did: Did you enjoy the party?
Did he speak to you? Who did you see?
To make negatives, we use didn't: I didn't ask for help. They didn't say thank you.
But we DON'T use did in questions and negatives with the verb be and most modals:
He wasn't happy. She couldn't do it. Were you late?
(See Unit 38 for help with be, and Unit 49 for help with modals.)

Short forms I / we / you / they've finished he / she / it's finished
For regular verbs, the past participle is the same as the past simple, but you have
to learn the past participles of irregular verbs. (See Unit 69 and page 144.,)
We use the present perfect for actions with a result in the present:
She's lost her bag. (= It happened in the past, but the result is that she hasn't
got her bag now.)
Negatives
I / we / you / they have not / haven't finished
he / she / it has not / hasn't finished

We use the present perfect to talk about recent actions at no fixed time, often with
just, already, recently: We've just received your e-mail.
I haven't seen Andrea recently. I've already been there.
We also use it for actions or experiences which are not finished, often with yet, so
far, ever:
'Have you ever been to Cuba?' 'No, I haven't been there yet.'

Last year we went skiing. He was very happy there.
Adverbs that tell you how often {often, always etc), and the adverbs just and
already, usually go before the verb: I always walk to work.
or between two verbs: She has never been there. I can already do it.

Yet goes at the end of the sentence: I haven't done it yet.

Passives
The present simple passive is formed with am / is / are + the past participle:
I'm called Clare. The grass is cut every Monday.
For the past simple passive we use was / were + the past participle:
The cars were made in Italy.
We use the passive when an action is more important than the person who
does, it or when we do not know who did it:
My car was stolen last night. (The police don't know yet who did it.)
Sometimes we add by plus the person or thing doing the action:

Countables and uncountables
Most nouns in English are countable, which means we can count them:
a bottle, two cats, five people, twenty rooms, a hundred students
Some nouns are uncountable, so we can't count them:
bread, butter, food, furniture, gold, information, luggage, money, news,
petrol, salt, scenery, sugar, rice, water
We can't make uncountable nouns plural, and we use a singular verb with them:
I'd like some information, (not *l'd like some informations.)
The rice is delicious, (not *The rice / rices are delicious.)

T ellin g a story
At the beginning we usually describe what was happening before the story really started, by
using the past continuous:
The sun was shining as I walked home. It was a lovely day, and I was thinking about Susie.
Then we say what happened next in the story, by using the past simple:
A man with a gun ran out of the bank. A police car arrived, and drove after him.
Sometimes we finish the story by saying something like this:
It was exciting / frightening / fun for all of us.
I really enjoyed / the day / the trip / the experience.
When you tell your friends a story, it is important to keep talking. Don't stop speaking if you
can't think of a word - try to think of another way of saying it.
When you write a story, plan it before you write it, in parts or paragraphs, like this:
describing the scene at the beginning of the story
the actions that happen in the story
the end of the story
