Entry #4: New Technologies Provide Varying Levels of Costs and Benefits

APA Citation: Jill Wechsler (December 2003). New Technologies Provide Varying Levels of
Costs and Benefits. Retrieved from http://www.proquest.com

Summary:

This article mainly talks about how expensive it is to develop new medical technology. It
also includes the counterargument of the many benefits that new medical technology brings.
The article is organized in the way that it lists cons and then adds pros of medical technology to
create a non-biased article. Besides this, it also mentions how the demand of medical
technology has caused an surplus or increase in costs. Since the demand is big, the
development of this technology has to be more efficient and has to be produced at a faster rate.
Some examples of this are mentioned throughout the article, like the demand for technology
that is used for diagnostic imaging and cardiac care.

Evaluation:

This source is a viable resource because it was directly recovered from the ASU
(Arizona State University) library database. It is home to thousands of articles that relate to the
same subject and are well constructed. Besides this, since ASU is a university that has special
databases that are about medical research all the articles are well supported by facts. The asu
library also connects the articles to its original source therefore it leads to another different
source of information. It opens a gateway to other articles that relate either to the same author
or subject at hand. Overall, this tool is very trustworthy and it can lead to new perspectives.

Reflection:

This source will be very useful for my research because it provides various facts for a
counterargument for my thesis. I can use this counterargument to see where my thesis needs to
be strengthen and how I can minimize the chance of contradicting myself in my own essay. It
also has many information on how medical technology has helped our society and how the
demand is greatly increasing. On the other hand, it has a different perspective on how costly it is
to develop it. Overall this article is going to be useful in the way that it displays how the end
justifies the means.

Technology. Retrieved from https://www.sciencedirect.com

Summary:

This article talks about how medical technology has been critical for society throughout
the years. It mainly emphasizes on how many patients that developed a specific disease need
this developments in medicine in order for them to survive. The article gives various examples
of this. One of the examples is how people who developed a cardiacs disease, depend on
medical technology that specializes in heart diagnostics. Besides this point, it also mentions
how the costs of having these technologies has increased ever since society has become
largely dependent on it. Overall, it emphasizes the point that medical technology is largely
needed for society to withstand the dangers of disease.

Reflection:

This article will be very useful in the way that it provides a very strong viewpoint of how
medical technology is a very important resource in todays society. It also shows how the role of
medical technology has been key to society and explains how it has shaped the medical field.
This also provides how humans have become very dependent on these innovations. The
information provided on this area can be used to show how it would be illogical to think that
costs outweigh the benefits. This will largely enhance my thesis and will provide more backbone
for my arguments in my essay.

This article will be useful in the way that it shows how medical technology is not only
affecting people but also affecting the facilities that people are being treated in. It gives a whole
new perspective that can be added to my research or thesis. Besides the fact that it also
supports my main argument in my paper, it gives me the advantage of listing more benefits that
medical technology has provided for the long run. This article also has new information on how
hospitals or medical facilities are employing the new technology that is provided for them and
how it is rapidly changing them.

Significant Quotes:

Entry #7: How Changes in Medical Technology Affect Healthcare Costs

APA Citation: KFF (2007, March 2). How Changes in Medical Technology Affect Healthcare
Costs. Retrieved from https://www.kff.org

Summary:

This article talks about how recent developments in medical technology have caused
changes to the healthcare system. It mainly focuses on how improvement of technology has
increased the costs of treatments and healthcare benefits. One of the facts stated, healthcare
costs have increased an average annual rate of 9.8%. It goes on to explain how treatments have
advanced and become more technology dependent. Even though this is a benefit, the article
counters this by saying how the money that was inputted into these specific technologies is too
big of an investment. In other words, even though treatments are better and more advanced, they
have become too costly, thus adding more cost to healthcare plans.

Evaluation:
This source is viable because it comes from a website that focuses on scholarly journals
that are mainly about medical related topics. Besides this, each article is composed by a variety
of different sources. It references to the people who gathered the information and composed it
into the references that were used in the article. This is important because it shows that the
information is valid and is supported.

Reflection:
This source will be very useful in my research because it shows the other perspective of
my thesis. It takes up the economic perspective of my research and how it relates to other
branches of my topic. This information will serve as an option to reduce the chance of a
counterargument from being made and prevent my research from sounding redundant. Overall
this article will open the gateway to a stronger thesis that will benefit from the use of the
opposite perspective.

Significant Quotes:
Running Head: Synthesis Statement for Development of Medical Technology 14

Since 1970, health care spending has grown at an average annual rate of 9.8%, or about 2.5
percentage points faster than the economy as measured by the nominal gross domestic
product (GDP).

Second factor is the level of use that a new technology achieves (i.e., how many times is the
new technology used?). Does the new technology extend treatment to a broader
population? examples would be innovations that address previously untreatable illness,
diagnose new populations for existing treatments, or extend existing treatments to new
conditions.

Synthesis Statement

My sources all focus on one single topic, the benefits of medical technology. The

research I conducted consist of both popular sites like the New York Times and scholarly sources

like articles from the ASU library database. Both are articles that were constructed by people

who are experts that are in some way connected or have had first-hand experience with medical

technology. The majority of my popular sources are by people who have researched data and

have conducted thorough research on why medical technology is either beneficial to or

downgrading the medical field. On the other hand, all my scholarly source are by people who

have some sort of relation or degree in the medical field. They are the people who have had

actual experience with the current developments of medical technology. These specific

distinctions connect all my sources by showing how they both contain two very different

perspectives but they all ultimately lead to the bigger picture which is how medical technology

has changed the medical field or society throughout the last couple of decades for good or for

bad.
Running Head: Synthesis Statement for Development of Medical Technology 15

My popular sources benefit my thesis or argument by showing the con perspective pf the

development of medical technology. They also include pros, but the cons is what help strengthen

my main thesis, which is that medical development is crucial for society and that countless

benefits come from it. By including the con perspective, I can create a connection to how these

cons directly affect the medical field. For example the KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation) says that

Since 1970, health care spending has grown at an average annual rate of 9.8%, or about 2.5

percentage points faster than the economy as measured by the nominal gross domestic product

(KFF, 2007).

They can be used as examples to serve as a means to show how the negatives and positive

relationships of medical technology. Besides this, by including a different perspective, it closes

all major flaws in m argument and it reduces the chance of creating redundancy or the creation of

a counterargument against my thesis or argument. These sources also include an economic view

of the topic. They argue that medical technology may have economic repercussions because it is

too costly. Some talk about how funds are difficult to raise and how money is drawn from other

economic areas, like agriculture for example, to be able to fund medical research. This

perspective compliments with the pros by showing a great consequence from putting too much or

investing a lot of money into these developments

The majority of my thesis is going to be carried by all my scholarly sources that I found

using the ASU library scholarly search function. These are the articles from where most of my

pro medical technology information is going to come from. These articles are mostly one sided,

and share the perspective that my thesis holds. They have concrete information that was gathered

by people in the medical field. They provide a firm standing of the benefits that medical
Running Head: Synthesis Statement for Development of Medical Technology 16

technology has to offer. The most helpful thing about my scholarly sources is that it actually

includes various real life examples of how these innovations are currently changing the medical

field. One example, is how they talk about how surgeries are now also being conducted with

robotic arms. Those types of examples from my sources are beneficial in the way that they create

a vivid image of how medical technology is advancing and revolutionizing hospitals and medical

procedures. Another benefit from these sources is that it will furthermore strengthen the

perspective of the pros medical technology has to offer. It included various testimonies of actual

doctors that talk about how their job has changed for the best with the coming of all these

medical innovations. Overall, my thesis is going to be greatly enhanced by these sources by

being provided with concrete information that clearly states the purpose and reason of my main

argument.

When researching these sources, a lot of unknown information was uncovered. The

majority people when asked right away take a pro perspective on developing medical technology,

but they dont really understand the complex process. These sources helped reveal the

repercussions that the development medical technology, which is primarily the economic effect

on jobs and its costly funding. On the other hand, it also uncovers how these medical innovations

are directly affecting peoples jobs and work environment. They show a lot of views that people

tend to not know or be ignorant of.

All in all, by conducting research and gathering information on my sources all of my

critical questions have been answered. They have showed both sides of the topic. The sources

have provided various examples and extensive research of how rapid the medical field is
Running Head: Synthesis Statement for Development of Medical Technology 17

changing. They have answered the con perspective by approaching the topic through a monetary

or economic means. Most importantly they answered the question on why or why not is medical

technology worth developing and listing its main defect and benefits. Both sides of the topic are

included and are extensively supported.
