Stay Woke

Overtime the human race has become more aware of the things around them, fearing the

unknown yet curious for what lies ahead. Unlike animals, humanity has evolved to feel

compassion towards other beings yet have selfish desires. An individual's past can become

something much greater in shaping their future. Get Out is a movie directed by Jordan Peele in

which a black male named Chris goes on a trip with his white girlfriend Rose to meet her

parents. Throughout the movie Chris experiences events that make him aware that something

evil resides within Roses family. Although he faces certain challenges that put his life in danger,

Chris always puts his feelings before anything else. Jordan, the director, states that the black

protagonist is supposed to represent not race, but humans in general. Explaining further, Peele

describes humans as being woke meaning that they are aware of what is happening around

them and how feelings can cause an individual to act in certain occasions. Society as a whole is

made up of people whose words and actions can be expressed through the way the person may

feel such as what the movie Get Out represents.

The movie Get Out starts with a young black man named Chris and his girlfriend Rose

discussing plans for their trip to meet Roses parents. Once they get there, Chris immediately

notices something is wrong since they are white people who hired black people to do their

chores. It gets even more unnatural when Chris is confronted with members of Roses family

which keep asking questions about his skin color and how it feels like to be black. When Chris

figures out that Rose has been kidnapping her former black lovers, he panics and Roses mother

puts him to sleep. He later finds out that they have been hypnotizing people like himself and

swapping brains with the much older white people for immunity. Chris then escapes his death

and ends up killing everyone of Roses family members before he is rescued by his best friend

Rod who tried to convince Chris not to go inside the house. Although viewers may automatically

assume it's about race, the real symbolic reason behind this movie is about characteristics that

portray human emotions.

Words are very important since it gives a person the freedom to express himself to say

what's on his mind, not only that but it can show how they are feeling through a certain pitch

they are using. Rod, Chris best friend, tries to reason with him into not going on the trip and tells

him what is she doing ? licking your balls ? As profound that may sound it shows that Rod

thinks Rose must be doing something very drastic in order for her to convince Chris to meet her

parents who are also white. Jordan explained that Rods words and expressions are supposed to

be those of the audience, with the only catch being that he is actually able to communicate with

the protagonist Chris. Over time there are more instances where Chris explains to Rod the weird

events occurring at Roses family get together and he responds with how the audience feels.

Halfway through the movie, Chris explains to Rose that his mother bled to death from a hit and

run while he just stood at home watching tv. He interprets that he could have called 911 but he

didnt because it would make it real. Another example of this is Chris tells Rose about how

unsettled he is with the people he meets inside the premises but quickly disregards it since Rose

sees it only as a joke. This gives a representation of how words can express an individual's

feelings.

Depending on the way a person is feeling can also determine what their actions might be.

On the way to Roses parents house she hits a deer and lands on the side of the road. While she

stays behind the car and tells the protagonist that it ran off, Chris goes and investigates. This

scene can be depict how Rose shows no compassion toward the animal thus leading to her

staying back while on the other hand Chris feels sympathy since his mother was also a victim of

a hit and run. During the tour of the house Dean, Roses father, shows Chris a picture of his

grandfather who lost to a black man and Dean states that he almost got over it. Analyzing it

more, one can imagine that from what he said, the grandfather saw that black people were

genetically superior. Because of his feelings toward the loss of the race, his actions lead to him

creating the coagula. Representing that emotions are strong enough to the point where it can

guide people to do certain actions even without thinking if it's the right or wrong choice.

Homo sapiens have evolved to the point where they thrive on emotions and have acted

accordingly. Much like this movie, the white people represent selfishness for their desire to

become young or perhaps better looking and do the extreme to accomplish their desire. Whereas

Chris and Rod portrays kind and honesty and may act selfish but only to help others. These

characteristics are what society looks for in order for others to join their ranks otherwise they are

considered outcasts. Get Out is a work of art for capturing the true intent of those who choose

to become ignorant while the better judgment of the good hearted people will come above the

rest.
