ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
2016/2017
We are from group 5 praise and thanks Allah S.W.T, who gave us chance and power to
finish this fairly hard task. And dont forget to say thanks to the lecturer who guide us up to
until this point. Group 5 analyze a thesis from Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta which
compiled by Maulana Mansyur entitled A Semiotic Analysis on the Novel the Five People
You Min Heaven. We realize that to analyze the authors work which have been revised and
researched multiple time is a difficult thing. We believed that because we are just graduate
student who have minimal knowledge in scientific writing, but we still do our best just like
what our lecturer told us. Our lecturer said that there is no permanent research format, so
there is a possibility to do their own way. Which is our first obstacle and became the reason to
use several references to analyze and to build up a solid ground for our arguments. We used
book from Prof. Dr. Sugiyono Penelitian Kualitatif Kuantitatif and Prof. Dr. Nyoman Kutha
Ratna, SU. Metodologi penelitian Kajian Budaya dan Ilmu Sosial Humaniora pada
umumnya We have done everything we can do, hope it has benefit for everyone especially
ourselves.
Thank You
Group 5
1. Who are the people that Eddie met on his way to heaven?
2. What are the meanings of Eddies meeting with those people?
Few times in our discussion. We find it confusing because we're in the process of
studying semiotics, but after a long discussion we agreed that:
1. The first question is not clear. If the author just mention who are those people that
Eddie met in his dream, it would be completed just using character introduction. It
is not specifically toward something. The author could give a lot more specific
question and toward symbol analysis just like in his thesis title. Like:
Are those five people who Eddie met in his dream are symbols? Or
Is Heaven in this story is a symbol?
2. The second question, we agreed that there is nothing to respond.
D. Significant of Study
There is nothing serious to respond in this part.
E. Research Methodology
Firstly, we wondered why the author put research methodology in the first chapter.
But after asking to lecturer, there was no format / rules for the writing of chapter of
thesis and also after reading some researchs book, we found a book that shows the
format / thesis-making rules on state Islamic university like in this thesis. We also get
some thesis from the same university also uses a format like Maulana Mansyur. The
main point is which is making us agree that it is okay to research methodology
inserted into Chapter I in accordance with the rules of writing formats that already
exist. However, because we use the reference in Sugionos research book, we agreed
that if there are no rules or the format given by a university, it should follow a
common format that exists. So, the research methodology can be separated from the
Chapter I and into Chapter III.
1. Objective of Study
The writer includes the purpose of research on the part of the methodology. In
our view, the purpose of the study was not included in the research methodology
based on the Sugionos book. The research objective is placed after the
formulation of the problem. The things that should be discussed in the research
METODE PENELITIAN BAHASA & SASTRA 4
methodology is such, research instruments, data sources, analytical techniques and
others.
2. Research Method
The researchers explained that he uses qualitative research. However,
researchers did not explain why he is using qualitative methods. As in the
Sugionos book saying that Dalam hal ini perlu dikemukakan, mengapa metode
seperti test, kuesioner, pedoman wawancara (Sugiono, 2016:399). It looks like
the author use descriptive qualitative method. Because the author will describe his
result of analysis.
3. Data Analysis Technique
We dont have any reference to respond to this case. Because, we think that the
author is correct in his description.
4. Analysis Unit
In this part there are nothing to be responded because the object of the
research is coherent with the research title.
5. Instrument Research
In qualitative research, the instrument is the human research or the research of
itself. Like the author explain, he became the research instrument in his thesis.
However, the author used additional instrument in table form. But the author
didnt mention it.
6. Time and Location
In this part, the author had described time and location of the research clearly
7. The author not inserting the technique of data gathering and data validity test.
According to Sugiyonos book. The author should give description about how the
author gathered the data. What way he collected the data and how the author test
the validity of his data.
Some of them were not explained thoroughly by the author, even some of it showed
some ambiguity. One kind of semiotics which are not explained thoroughly by the author and
contain ambiguity are the third kind of semiotic which is Zoo Semiotic on page 18. Inside
of the thesis, the author explained that Zoo Semiotic as It referred to the system of sign on
the behavior of non human while many sources that we had read before as a comparing
material is far from the quotes which the author mention. Almost all of them stated that Zoo
Semiotic is a semiotic which specialized to study sign system that made by animal.
In accordance with our discussion, the most proper offering definition of Zoo
Semiotic is the system of sign which produced by animal. It all because of Zoo is a place
which many animal from any species, genus, family, ordo, even class can gather up, and
some form of discipline about animal started with zoo such as zoology etc. So, we had to
put a limitation to the non-human term used in the quotes. It has a wide meaning which
made the ambiguity showed up from the statement which include every object which is not
categorized as a human, while Zoo Semiotic is focusing on animal as its object.
In this part, the authors action is only quotes from another source or figures, however
in quoting it is much better if the author pick or choose a much clearer quote so it wont
contain ambiguity.
RESEARCH FINDINGS
A. Data Description
According to first research question of this thesis mentions that who are the
people that Eddie met on his way to heaven?, it is suitable with the first research finding
on (p.17) about a date which mentions several people who met with Eddie. For the data,
which is inputted of people who met with Eddie as a main character in Novel The Five
People You Meet in the Heaven it is a very simple explanation but complete. It means
that the writer enters a main point of the first people who met with Eddie, he is The blue
Man.
In the other hand, the data which entered by the writer shows of Column about
sign, object and, represent, it is clearly that each column represent of pierces triadic.
First column reflects of the sign which to be a sign of the novel. It follows by the object
has relationship between a sign in the novel. Third column shows a reason of the sign and
result of relation between the sign and object.
There is also something which make a wedge in mind that about the first research
question. According to the commentator of this thesis that the research question is very
good but it does not show that it is for a symbol question.
WHO ARE THE PEOPLE THAT EDDIE MET ON HIS WAY TO HEAVEN?
According to the commentator that it can be changed with what does the people
that Eddie have met symbolize as? In other hand, for the second research question can be
shown what we need in the novel according to semiotic approach that to be a basic of the
analysis.
Then the study on page 25 to page 26 which the analysis from five people who
became the sign in the novel are reaching the needed descriptive analysis with qualitative
method. When we put a little focus on table on part A of the descriptive data, it included
in additional instrument. Then if we read on the research methods guide book, if we
If we take a look at the data, its already suitable with what the author analyze
with the theory, but with an unorganized format like on part B which start to analyze and
discuss every time Eddie met with a figure as well as a sign could be, the author gave a
triadic for each of them made it into a little messy than it should be. There are two amiss
in this case, the analysis is undisputedly is on the right track because we knew what the
author wanted us to know, but without the precise writing, it will made a problem which
shouldnt be there at all.
Firstly, the composition of object, sign, and interpretant on the triadic for every
character are having amiss which object is on the left side and interpretant on the right
side. Object should be on the right side and interpretant on the left side.
Secondly, the data writing format for each character inserted on the triadic which
adapted with the triadic is amiss too, for example on the first person point of view
analysis on page 28 is one of example because every analysis on the character have a
different format from one to another. On triadic sign, we recognize the blue man as the
first person, the object is Eddie himself, and the interpretant is no random act in life, but
the author explained that the interpretant below is the blue man, which it should be Eddie
as an interpretant to the blue man because he is the one that will be a lesson in his life.
Actually, the author already informed it as well but the signal is not clear in the
writing. The author should write what become as the interpretant from the first person,
then followed with explanation from the interpretant itself, because even it was not
mentioned whose interpretation it is, we easily know it was the first person. The quotes is
the interpretant of this sign was the blue man.
CONCLUSION
In conclusions writing. Its already conclude what have been mentioned in the
authors analysis which is a conclusion that contain five figures which have been analyzed
each of them. Its already represent a succinctly conclusion.
