Lesson Goals:
- Students will understand the qualities of effective feedback.
- Students will provide each other with quality feedback.
Lesson Products:
- Notes on giant feedback examples (collected, formative)
- Peer Critique (collected, summative)
Overarching Goals:
- The Character Interview Assignment (summative assessment) will help students get to
know their character, brainstorm chapter 3 ideas, and ultimately plan/write chapter 3
(their culminating assignment for this unit, summative assessment).
- Peer Critique allows students to practice LT 1: COMMUNICATION, a long-term Learning
Target.
Minute-by-Minute
(2 min.) Welcome!
(3 min.) Handout giant feedback examples, direct pairs to read through the first example for
strengths and find the following (post on SmartBoard):
- The specific element being addressed
- Where the element is located
- What the author said that was a strength
- Why this was a strength
- The impact of this strength
(3 min.) Share out, note the two different kinds of quotations (quotes are needed for a 3)
(5 min.) Students work/discuss the second example, similar prompts are on the board
- The specific element being addressed
- Where the element is located
- What the author said or didnt say that could be improved
- Why this is an area of improvement
- Suggestions
- Why the suggestions would improve the piece
(3 min.) Share out, note that quotes are not needed, but suggestions ARE
(2 min.) Exit ticket: Write one compound-complex sentence (practice before assessment)
