AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS

Name: Morgan Hutcheson

Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other website-
creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed:
weather data to see patterns in weather and climate.

Investigate weather by observing, measuring with simple weather instruments (thermometer, wind vane,
rain gauge), and recording weather data (temperature, precipitation, sky conditions, and weather events) in
a periodic journal or on a calendar seasonally.

Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will
students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced? How
long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are creating? How
broad is this audience? (Overview should be a minimum of 2 paragraphs).

Students will be asked to look at the Flipped Classroom link on the classroom blog. They will be
completing a short assignment in order to be better prepared for the following day activities. This allows the
students to get a better idea of what is going to be discussed in class and will allow them to have some prior
knowledge. The students will watch a short BrainPop Jr. Video about temperature and then will are asked
to go outside and observe the temperature, weather, etc. outside. Last, they will create a picture of what
they observed and write a short description of it. As stated, this will prepare the students for the next class
and will give them more time to learn/practice with other content.

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and
Why? By working through this lesson, students are able to reach up to LoTi 4. The students are having to
use technology to look at the blog and move through the video that is posted on the classroom blog. They
are exploring and applying what they know to their own real world.

Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project
be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of
technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? Using technology for this lesson is
essential! I am using tutorials from an educational website for the students to get an introduction to the
topic!
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and
student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would
(1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow
common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies. When using the internet, there are definitely some things
that teachers/parents need to be concerned about. The internet can be an extremely unsafe place and it is
important to implement some things to keep the student life private. No pictures of students or student work
will be placed on the blog without permission and signed forms by the parents. Also, these forms can be
password protected so that not just anyone can see them! It is important to give information to parents about
how you are going to protect their child to help alleviate those fears.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried
before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn? I have
never created an actual blog before! I cant wait to implement one into my classroom because the
communication that it allows for is so essential within a classroom setting.
Other comments about your proposed activity: I am super excited about implementing this into my
classroom! It requires the students to use the classroom blog which will allow the parents to help get
involved as well and maybe check out the blog if they havent already!
