A word from our

Chairman...
For Tocal College principal Darren Bayley,
the upcoming 2017 Tocal Field Days - held over
three days on the first weekend in May - will
present the perfect opportunity to forge closer
connections between agriculture and the city.
As sprawling suburbs replace paddocks,
and nearby Maitland takes on the mantle
of being one of the fastest growing areas
in NSW as it soaks up the overflow from
Newcastle, this notion of connectedness
has never been so important.
Connections between the city and the
bush can no longer be taken for granted, Mr
Bayley said.
Its becoming rarer for people to have
links to the rural sector.
There are no longer farms just down
the road and they no longer have parents,
grandparents or other family members who
live on properties, he said.
Tocal Field Days attract more than 20,000
visitors across the three days of the event, with
people pouring out of Maitland, Newcastle,
the Lower Hunter, Central Coast and northern
Sydney suburbs to the grounds of Tocal
Colleges CB Alexander Campus in idyllic rural
surrounds near Paterson in the Hunter Valley.
Its proof that city people really do want
to see where their food and fibre come from,
Mr Bayley said.
For many young people, the field days
are an opportunity to find out more about
undertaking further study at Tocal College.
One of the most important aspects of the
Tocal Field Days was the showcasing of Tocal
Colleges courses and its students.
This year were putting Tocal on Show,
its great for the students to be able to show
off their practical achievements in areas such
as mustering, fencing, livestock handling and
horse skills to the public, he said.
While the campus has a residential
student population of about 120, the college
reaches thousands of other people through
its external online and short courses.
Online qualifications include diplomas
in agriculture and conservation and land
management and an advanced diploma in
agriculture.
Short courses, lasting one to three days,
cover topics from queen bee breeding to
pest management and chainsaw operation
and maintenance.
Tocal has a second campus at Yanco, in
the Riverina, and holds courses in 83 locations
from Wagga to Broken Hill and Armidale.
Mr Bayley said commodity prices were
strong, particularly for beef, and agriculture
was once again driving the national economy.
In the Lower Hunter, the season had
turned for the better, with summers extreme
temperatures and low rainfall giving way to
good, soaking rain.
The countryside was now lush green,
dams were filling and the mood of primary
producers and land managers was buoyant.
With this renewed confidence, farmers
would be opening up their back pockets,
something that bode well for the field days
exhibitors, he said.
Tocal Field Days are one of the largest
agricultural field days in Australia, and farmers
will be out looking for good deals on everything
from the biggest tractor to gear for the shed,
available all in the one spot, he said.
The field days have been an important
date on the Lower Hunters events calendar
for more than three decades; in fact, 2015
was the first time in the field days history
that the event had to be cancelled because
of the devastating April superstorm.
The Tocal Field Days mean many
different things to different people, and the
saying that theres something for everyone is
certainly true.
Check out the urban garden displays
or come face to face with a Brangus, kick
the tyres on the latest tractor or undertake
some retail therapy, be entertained by Talent
at Tocals young performers or those ever-
popular racing piglets, savour the great food
and coffee, soak up ambiance of historic
Tocal Homestead or chat to specialists from
the Department of Primary Industries and
Local Land Services ... the list goes on.
For Mr Bayley the field days are all about
showing off agriculture to the district, region
and beyond.
Its that connection between the country
and the city thats important, he said.

Urban and Community Gardens

On pockets of land in back yards,
front yards and school yards, street
verges and vacant plots across the
Hunter Valley, a food revolution is
underway.
Urban and community gardens
are sprouting up, and the movement
will be the feature event at the 2017
Tocal Field Days.
Three passionate devotees - all
with different motivations behind
their individual gardens - will be at
the field days on Saturday, May 6, to
share their stories.
Biodiversity gardens will be set
up near the Good Food and Wine
Hall where their talks will be held.
It will be coordinated by Slow
Food Hunter Valley.
The groups leader, Amorelle
Dempster, says backyard and
community gardens in urban areas
can feed families, their neighbours,
and also be a source of income for
people wanting to sell their excess
fresh produce to markets and
eateries.
Ms Dempster, who also runs
the Readers Cafe and Larder in
East Maitland, said the concept was
taking off across Australia, including

setting up the gardens as a means
of re-entering the community in a
meaningful way.

For Mother Moira Evers, rector
of the Anglican Parish of Telarah-
Rutherford, her urban food oasis is

Fiacres Feast, a community Alexander Kitchen Garden

saint of gardening - has sprung up
in the grounds of St Christophers,
Rutherford, growing fresh,
seasonal produce to supplement
non-perishables in the parishs
emergency food relief program.
Apart from growing vegetables
and fruit, it aims to teach people to
produce and cook their own fresh
food, thereby building life skills and
self-esteem.
The garden is accessible to all
people regardless of their religion,
cultural background, gender,
sexuality, age or ability.
NSW Government grants have
facilitated raised beds, water tanks,
a shed and the conversion of the
old parish kitchen into a commercial
facility.

Feedback Organic Recovery is
the brainchild of David Sivyer.
With a background in traditional
farming and also hospitality, Mr
Sivyer started his venture by
collecting waste - leaves, egg shells,
paper and coffee grounds - from
cafes in Maitland and Newcastle
and turning it into compost on his
familys property.
The business has expanded and
he now designs and installs urban
gardens built from waste materials
such as pallets, and also holds
adults and children.
Mr Sivyer is now promoting
larger-scale urban farms, where
organic waste is collected from food
outlets, used to remediate the soil on
vacant land in the cities, and fresh,
seasonal produce is grown that can
be sold back into markets and cafes.
He is inviting people to get
involved by setting up urban farms
in their backyards or by helping out
by planting, transplanting, cultivating
and harvesting at existing plots.

Where do vegetables come
from before they end up on
supermarket shelves?
Head down to the
Department of Primary
Industries marquee at the Tocal
Field Days, where city and
country kids alike will be able
to find out all about what grows
above and below soil level.

welcome to come along and
get their hands dirty, digging for
vegetables that grow in soil like
potatoes, sweet potatoes and
carrots.
Kids can also sow their own
broad bean seed, and take it
home in a punnet where they
can nurture it ... and eventually
eat their own produce.
This free activity is suitable
for youngsters aged 3-15 and
will run over all three days of the
field days.

our region
During its three years of operation, Hunter Local
Land Services has been working to deliver high quality
services to landholders that address biosecurity
threats and support farmers and other land managers
increase the productivity of agriculture and sustain
healthy landscapes.
In 2016 it achieved:
525 animal health-related property visits by district
vets
61,634 wild dog and fox baits provided to
landholders
1,121 wild dog and fox-related property visits by
biosecurity rangers
309 landholders trained in pest animal control
6,987 ha of travelling stock reserves managed
1,335 people upskilled through 102 training events
1,794 ha of bushland improved.

have drawn huge crowds as
the little porkers navigated
their way around the course,
dressed in costumes that
have included Olympic

Field Days will be the first time she has been
paid to perform.
But with appearances at Newcastles
Ukulele Festival, the reopening of Maitlands
Bunnings Warehouse following the 2015
superstorm and, of course Tamworth, to her
credit, Azure is excited at the prospect of
performing live on stage in front of crowds at
this years field days.
Azure - whose list of favourite artists
include Adele, Taylor Swift and Michael
Jackson - is self-taught on both the ukulele
and guitar.
Now a Year 10 student at St Josephs,

Talent at Tocal
Tocal will continue its tradition of giving
budding young performers a break when they
take to the stage at this years field days.
This years impressive line-up of talent
- chosen from Talent at Tocal auditions
held earlier in February - includes 13 year-
old guitar-playing country singer Trinity
Woodhouse and 15 year-old singer/ukulele
and guitar player Azure Hudson.
They will be joined on stage by 10 other
acts, including a trio, duo, soloists and even
a flautist.
Despite their youth, both Trinity, who lives
at Abernethy, and Azure, from Aberglasslyn,
are experienced artists, having performed
during the Tamworth Country Music Festival
as well as local events and talent quests.
Trinity survived a bout of tonsillitis at
the Talent at Tocal auditions and impressed
the judges so much with her rendition of
American singer songwriter Maren Morris
My Church that they offered her a paid gig
at the field days.
In Tamworth, Trinity busked for 15 hours,
competed in two talent quests and was
interviewed by the ABC.
Back home in the Hunter, Trinity wowed
the audience when she performed during
breaks at a recent show by Tamworth Golden
Guitar award winner Travis Collins at the
Khartoum Hotel in Kitchener.
Trinity has been taking singing lessons for
three years; her guitar playing is a much more
recent and came about somewhat by chance
when a neighbour found a guitar abandoned
at the rubbish dump, restored it and gave it
to her.
The Year 8 student from Cessnock High
School is a country girl through and through.
Living on acreage with her family, Trinity
lives for country music, loves animals and
when she leaves school plans to study
agriculture at Tocal College.
For Azure - who performed ukulele
sensation and Americas Got Talent winner
Lochinvar, Azures first brush with fame came
as a Year 4 student when she performed one
of her own songs with her music teacher, with
their performance being posted on YouTube.
This years Talent at Tocal audition
attracted more than 20 performers, with 12
acts being selected in the final line-up.
They will perform on three stages - on
the Main Stage, at the Wedge and at Tocal
Homestead - across the three-day event.
Tocal Field Days manager Wendy Franklin
said the Talent at Tocal program had been
embraced by visitors to the field days.
The crowds really enjoy seeing young
people having a go, Ms Franklin said.
This is not busking, nor is it a talent
quest; they have to audition and then perform
a set number of songs in front of a live
audience for which they get paid.
Its Tocals way of supporting young local
talent and for many performers it will be the
first paid gig of their music careers.
Its not easy for young local artists to
score real life experiences like this, she said.

Tocal Homestead
Tocal Homestead stands as a
reminder of Australias colonial past
and every year becomes a hive of
activity for hundreds of visitors who
flock to the Tocal Field Days.
Step back in time with a visit to the
historic homestead where you will be
greeted by the smell of freshly baked
scones straight from the old wood
stove.
Watch the blacksmith at work at
his forge or see sheep being shorn.
Check out the display of vintage
machinery or take a cart ride with
Harry, Tocals much-loved Clydesdale.
History buffs will be in their element
with informative talks to be held daily
on the verandah.
Or simply soak up the ambiance of
the gracious gardens with its majestic
trees, and the surrounding countryside.
Delicious homemade lunches and
refreshments will be available over the
course of the three-day event, with all
proceeds assisting ongoing restoration
projects on the heritage site.
Tocal has one of Australias finest
collections of colonial farm buildings
dating from the 1830s, including the
homestead which built in 1841 and
opened to visitors in 1987.
It has since won a number of
excellence in tourism awards and is a
popular venue for weddings and other
annual events such as the International
Back to Back Wool Challenge, which
will take place this year on June 11,
and the Peek Into The Past open day
on July 30.
Introduce yourself to one of the
Friends of Tocal volunteers, who are
dedicated to providing support for all
activities associated with Tocal College
and Tocal Homestead.
Visiting the homestead is easy.
Jump on the free shuttle bus which will
run to and from the homestead all day
throughout the event.
It departs from Thunderbolts
Corner on the main campus where the
field days are held.

Friends of Tocal
Friends of Tocal Inc is an important
part of the community of Tocal.
It is a group of people who are
interested in supporting not only the
Agricultural College and students, but
also the heritage listed site at Tocal
Homestead.
Some Friends volunteer at events
or on weekends, others support
financially and others provide
specialised skills on a volunteer basis.
And then there are Friends who just
like to keep in touch with whats going
on during the year at Tocal. If you

Tocal on Show
The Tocal Field Days have been
a highlight on the Hunter Valleys
calendar for more than 30 years.
But what sets the field days
apart from other events is the
involvement of Tocal Colleges
students and this year they will
be put under the spotlight with
Tocal on Show.
Tocal College beef manager
Mal Burke said that over
the years field days visitors
had always been interested
in meeting the students,
understanding what the college
had to offer in the way of
courses and finding out how it
fitted into the community.
So we decided to make
a big deal out of it this year
and put Tocal on Show in
which groups of students,
predominantly from the
Certificate IV in Agriculture
course, will give quick, 15-20
minute presentations, showing
off their skills, Mr Burke said.
Tocal on Show
will feature
demonstrations on:
Fencing,
Chainsaw operation,
Identifying weeds and grasses,
Drenching and vaccinating
cattle,
Hoof trimming for cattle,
Selecting a steer,
Mustering, by foot, on
horseback and using
machines,
Quad, motor bike and side-by-
side handling, and,
Horse handling by the colleges
horse course students.
Its the type of day-to-day
work the students carry out as
a part of their rigorous regime at
the college.
Tocal College students
come from all parts of Australia
including WA and Tasmania,
with a large contingent from the
Central Coast.
More than half the colleges
student population is female,
and the girls have proven year
after year that they are keen to
learn inside the classrooms and
outside in the field.
So what is the attraction
of studying at an agricultural
college such as Tocal?
Its exciting, its something
different and whats important is
that the students come out at the
end with the world at their feet,
Mr Burke said.
With qualifications at
certificate and diploma level, the
students are highly employable
on livestock and horse studs -
the home of many top names
being right here in the heart
of the Hunter Valley - and well
as on farms and stations, and
associated rural pursuits such
as land management and
conservation.
At the field days, the students
are put to work, also giving them
exceptional experience in rural
event management.
Their studies also can be
pathways to university.
Most students have found
their way to Tocal College having
attended the field days as
children with their families or as
high school students.
Tocal on Show will run on
all three days of the field days.

Safety
Quad bikes, two-wheel motor
bikes and side-by-sides will be
put through their paces by Tocal
College students at the field days.
The students will show their
skill in handling these three types
of farm bikes over the challenging
man-made terrain, and at the
same time reveal the pros and
pit-falls of each machine.
The emphasis will be on
safety, and in particular, the
importance of choosing the right
bike for the job.
The message is that not all
quad bikes are bad or that all
side-by-sides are good, Tocal
College lecturer Steph Teterin
said.
And there are situations, for
example in rough country, where
two-wheeled motor bikes are the
safest option.
Its all about walking into the
shed, knowing what job has to be
done and then picking the right
machine, she said.
Considerations include
the nature of the work to be
undertaken, the terrain, the riders
skill-level and whether items such
as tools or sprays need to be
transported.
Side-by-sides - with rollover
protection bars, seatbelts, and
a bigger footprint - are relative
newcomers to farming.
They come, as their name
suggests, with seats for two
people; and a tray on the back
enables gear to be carried easily
and safely.
The slightly wider wheel base
makes them more stable than
quads.
There is not a significant price
differential, with a quad costing
about $11,000 and a comparable
side-by-side about $14,000.
This is the second year that
Tocal College has incorporated
side-by-sides into its farming
regime.
Students undergo training on
all three types of machines but
now use side-by-sides instead
of quads as work vehicles for
mustering in the colleges beef
and dairy operations.

NSW Rural Fire Service
Extreme temperatures over summer
produced the worst possible scenario for
the Rural Fire Service, with catastrophic
conditions declared on a number of occasions
across NSW, including the Hunter region.
As properties and livestock came
under threat, and lives were put at risk, the
importance of bush fire preparedness was
again underlined, with now being the perfect
time to get ready for future bush fire seasons.
The Rural Fire Service will have a strong
presence at the Tocal Field Days again this
year, with residents of Port Stephens and
Dungog being given the opportunity to
have input into fire strategies for their local
government areas.
RFS coordinator Anne Mathieson said the
Lower Hunter Risk Management Plan would
be on display at the field days, as part of a 42-
day public consultation process which would

enable residents to have their say on bush fire
risk and mitigation in the two council areas.
Ms Mathieson said the Lower Hunter Risk
Management Plan was reviewed every five
years, and this years field days provided the
perfect opportunity to engage with as many
residents as possible.
Copies of the plan, including maps, will
be on display and people will be on hand to
discuss it with visitors to the field days.
Children visiting the RFS stand will also be
able to put the Get Down Low and GO, GO,
GO slogan into practice inside the inflatable
Smoke House which is filled with smoke-like
fog for them to crawl through.
Its a valuable exercise that could one
day save the life of your child, regardless of
whether they live in a bush fire-prone rural
area or in the city.
Emergency
Planning
Having an emergency plan
on how to best protect your
property and livestock in the
event of a natural disaster
makes good sense.
It is important to have a
plan which lists the actions
that should be taken before,
during and after an event
such as a flood or bush fire.
These plans are critical
for landholders, including
absentee landholders, in
flood and fire-prone areas.

of their new Farm Flood
Readiness Kit.

Bees at Tocal
Tocal College is the place
to bee if you want to become a
beekeeper. In 2016 Tocal College
delivered face to face nationally
accredited training mapped to
the Certificate III in Beekeeping to
over 300 students in every region
of NSW.
There are currently 30
students enrolled in the
Certificate III in Beekeeping
(AHC32010) in 2017, including
2 Beekeeper Trainees who are
full-time employees of commercial
beekeepers from New England
and the North coast.
You dont need to enrol in the
full Certificate III in Beekeeping to
gain practical skills in managing
bees. Tocal College offers a range
of face to face short courses
including; Beginning in Bees,
Pests and Diseases of Honey
Bees, Queen Bee Breeding, Honey
Bee Pollination Services, Artificial
Insemination of Queen Bees, and
Native Stingless Bees.

Tuck into a Devonshire tea at the
Tocal Field Days and help feed the
minds of students from one of the
Lower Hunters smallest schools.
Millers Forest Public School has
a total enrolment of just 65 students
but that wont stop its P&C from
undertaking one man-sized project.
P&C volunteers will be serving
scones, jam and cream, as well as
sandwiches and cakes in the colleges
Chapel during the field days.
A very busy grandmother of one of
the schools Kindergarten kids will bake
a staggering 1000 scones for hungry
visitors over the three days.
Sandwiches will be made fresh
daily, and home-baked cakes will be
available for sale.
P&C president Tracee Lee said
profits from the fund-raiser will go
towards new numeracy and literacy
resources for the students.

Blazing Saddles
Is riding a horse a long-held dream?
Maybe you live in the city and have never had the
chance to get up close and personal with a horse.
Or perhaps youve recently moved to a hobby farm
and youre contemplating buying a horse.
Rod Samson - who has been associated with the
Tocal Field Days for more than a decade through his
camel and childrens pony rides - will introduce horse
rides for adults at this years event.
Mr Samson, who runs Sahara Trail Rides at Anna Bay
and Oakfield Ranch at Woodberry, will bring four to five
of his horses to the field days to give adults the first-time
experience of being on horseback.
Adults will be able to ride on their own - not led - in a
roped-off area under the watchful eye of an instructor.
Riders will not be expected to put on saddles or
bridles, and they will be helped to mount and dismount.
Ive been thinking about this for a while and believe
that the Tocal Field Days is the perfect place to give it a
go, Mr Samson said.
Adults can go for a five-minute gentle walk on a
horse and then, if they like it, they can take the next step
after the field days and go on a longer ride along a trail or
on the beach, or maybe take lessons, he said.
Riding for adults will take place in the Childrens Park.
A fee will be charged for this activity.

Turn off those television cooking
shows and head on down to the
Good Food and Wine Hall at the
Tocal Field Days for some red hot
action.
The Bake or Burn cook-off is on
again, with high schools students
ready to turn up the heat in the
kitchen on Friday, May 5, and junior
chefs aged 7-16 years donning their
aprons on Sunday, May 7.
Tomaree High School, the winner of
previous Bake or Burn competitions, is
hoping to add to its prize stash and has
thrown out a challenge to other food
technology and hospitality students to
take them on.
Toronto and Bulahdelah high
schools have already signed up,
setting the stage for an exciting
cook-off and great entertainment for
all the family.

Contestants have just 20 minutes
to prepare, cook and plate up their
dishes, while providing a commentary
on their progress, all in front of a live
audience.
Each year a special ingredient
is chosen to be the hero of the
contestants dishes, with chicken,
beef, pork, honey and dairy in the
spotlight at previous competitions.

chefs must champion, and with the
Hunter Valleys highly acclaimed
reputation for fresh produce there are
sure to be some delicious culinary
masterpieces created.
With urban and community
gardening a major theme at this
years field days, the choice of
vegetables is fitting.
Last years junior chef winner,
Oscar Affleck, 11, of East Maitland,
will demonstrate his skills at the start
of the heats on Sunday - hopefully
inspiring more kids to get into the
kitchen - and will then take his place
on the judging panel.

Peppa, the
Tasmanian Devil joey
Meet Peppa, the Tasmanian
Devil joey born during the 2016
breeding season at Devil Ark in
the rugged Barrington Tops region
of NSW.
Peppa is one of 150
Tasmanian Devils at the facility, the
mission of which is to help bring
this iconic little Aussie battler back
from the brink of extinction.
With more than 90 per cent of
the wild population already wiped
out from Devil Facial Tumour
Disease, the work being carried
out in captivity at Devil Ark is
crucial to securing and building a
genetically-diverse and disease-
free population and ultimately
repopulate Tasmania with healthy
devils once the deadly cancer has
run its course.
Two decades after the
discovery of the disease there
is still no cure, nor is there a
vaccine, leaving these iconic
Australian animals still vulnerable
to extinction.
Devil Ark was set up in 2011,
with a nucleus of 44 Tasmanian
Devils.
Since then, five successful
breeding seasons have produced
more than 180 healthy joeys.

These fascinating marsupials
are born the size of a grain of rice
and by six weeks old reach the
size of a jelly bean.
Devil Arks aim is to produce
320 robust and disease-free joeys
by 2018.
But in order for it to achieve
its goal, the facility will have
to undergo a major and costly
expansion.
Its annual operational budget
already runs into many thousands
of dollars, including a hefty
$45,000 for food for the devils
and $16,000 in veterinary care;
field officers, vehicles and habitat
maintenance cost extra.
Devil Ark is a not-for-
profit charity that relies on the
communitys ongoing support
to spread the work and raise
awareness of the project.
Visitors to the Tocal Field
Days can meet Peppa in the Land,
Plants and Environment marquee
on Saturday, May 6, between
10am and 2pm.
Get up close to a devil, chat
with their keepers, ask about
adopting a devil, or find out what
your school can do to help Devil
Ark save this unique species from
extinction.

Service Clubs working at Tocal Field Days:

Kiwanis Paterson Golf Club Woodville School of Arts

Kiwanis International is a global
organisation of volunteers dedicated to
changing the world ... one child and one
community at a time.
Its members are men and women of all
ages and from across all professions who are
united in their commitment and compassion
for others.
The Kiwanis Club of East Maitland was
formed in 1980 and its involvement in this
years Tocal Field Days will enable club
members to continue their mission of giving
all children the opportunity to lead healthy
and successful lives.
Members will act as field marshals in
the lead-up to the field days and during the
three-day event, assisting the hundreds of
exhibitors set up their sites.
In return for their hard work, the club
will receive a donation from the field days
organisers.
The Kiwanis Club of East Maitland has
23 members but it is always on the lookout
for more, club spokesperson Rae Pigeon
said.
The club will have a stand at the Tocal
Fields Days so why not pop in to find out
how you can become a member and make
a real difference to the life of a child in your
community.
Few sporting entities in Australia have hit the
rough as often as Paterson Golf Club.
The club dates back to World War II
when soldiers, camped at the Paterson
showground, played golf for recreation. The
area soon reverted to scrub and it was not
until 1971 that a vision for a golf club in the
town re-emerged, Work, mostly done by hand
with picks and shovels, got underway but
gradually the hard manual labour began to
take its toll and the idea was abandoned.
In 1991, the long-held dream was
revitalised taking just over three years for the
project to come to fruition despite several
obstacles, seemingly always in their path.
However by the end of January 1994 the
greens and tees were complete. Another four
holes were opened two years later.
Today, its members still dig deep to keep
the club operating, and a team of volunteers
will work at this years Tocal Field Days
helping set up the event.
The donation they will receive from field
days organisers in lieu of their assistance
will go towards maintenance of the greens,
including new turf.
And for the proud, hard-working
members of the Paterson Golf Club, and the
town, thats just about as good as hitting a
hole-in-one.
The small Hunter community of Woodville
has one of the few remaining operational,
community-owned and managed School of
Arts in NSW, if not Australia.
With more than 50 individual and
family members, up to a dozen of them will
volunteer at this years Tocal Field Days.
It is strongly supported by its community
and has an active band of volunteers who
have guided its restoration and ongoing
maintenance.
Today, the historic building is a popular
venue for weddings - with brides and grooms
travelling from Sydney and further afield for
its quaint country ambiance.
Woodville School of Arts and hall
secretary Pat Lannen said that while
weddings were its biggest income stream,
running costs, including public liability
insurance and general maintenance, were a
constant drain on its funds.
The generous donation the committee
will receive from Tocal Field Days organisers
in lieu of their work at the event would go
towards plugging the funding hole and its
future projects, he said.
Our aim is to remain self sufficient
so we can be keep the hall running for the
community.

Men on a
mission
Newcastle Mens Shed members will
provide much of the manpower at the 2017
Tocal Field Days.
The shed, which was registered in 2014,
has about 70 members from all walks of life
and professions, including tradesmen and a
radiologist.
They initially took up residence in BHPs
old administration building in Mayfield North,
paying a peppercorn rental.
But when the site was earmarked for
remediation and closed last year, the men
found themselves without a home.
They currently meet in the St Johns
Ambulance hall in Hamilton each Tuesday at
10am for a cuppa and to discuss how they
can best continue their involvement in the
community.
And while their aim is to acquire a
permanent shed, their immediate need is to
find temporary premises, to provide them
with a place to meet and store their tools and
other equipment.
Mens Sheds are widely recognised as
being vital to mens health and well-being,
including medical conditions such heart
disease, diabetes and depression.
In these social hubs and workshops,
skills such as wood and metal-work are
revived, learnt and shared with fellow
members, all in an atmosphere of mateship.
We help and support each other, no
matter whether its making a bird box or
getting involved in a big community project,
or simply having a chat about how lifes
going, Newcastle Mens Shed secretary
Wayne Grant said.
Newcastle Mens Shed members have
worked tirelessly since the sheds inception;
they have helped with the Paint the Lake
REaD project which encourages Lake
Macquarie preschool children to read and at
the Australian Scout Jamboree.
They made 80 surfboard fin-shaped
trophies for the Tubes4Boobs Pink Ribbon
cancer appeal.
Some members also mentor high school
and TAFE students.
Mr Grant said the donation they will
receive from working at this years Tocal Field
Days would be used to help secure new
premises, and also meet ongoing costs such
as insurance.
Four to six weeks out from the start of the
field days, members will converge on Tocal
Colleges campus at Paterson to begin the
huge logistical and physical task of setting up
for the event on May 5, 6 and 7.
Paddocks will be turned into carparks,
fences and barricades will be erected,
signage will be put up and exhibitor areas will
be staked out.
Give us almost any practical problem
and well have a go at fixing it, Mr Grant
said.
But its unlikely it will be all hard work.
Well have a bit of fun for sure, he said.
We may even have a campfire or two.

able to view some of the top livestock
from studs in NSW and chat with the
breeders behind them in a series of
roving conversations.
They will follow a path around the
livestock section where the various
breed associations will be represented.

and given a second chance at life.
The work that this charitable
organisation carries out on its properties
at Glen Oak in the Hunter Valley comes

can balloon out to as many as 60 horses
at any one time.
Their feed bill is about $500 a week,

The Tocal Alumni was established in 2015
as an initiative of the 50th anniversary of the
establishment of the College in 1965. While
the College had been well served by an active
and dedicated Ex-students Association it was
felt that more could be done to keep in touch
with past graduates but also with others who
have had an Association with College through
attending a short course, serving as staff
member, living in the district and so on.
A constitution was drawn up and
approved by the CB Alexander Foundation
under which the Alumni will operate. A first
committee was established which is working
to get a range of activities underway.
