Category C: Guiding Childrens Behavior

Two Reflections and Two Samples

The example I used for acceptance and understanding of all people, reveals the strong commitment I
have to make a difference in the life of a child. The family has tremendous influence in a child and forming a
positive, open line of communication is something that must be established, category C is giving evidence to
support that. The connection I have bestowed upon me is the power to influence them in so many ways, the
act of trusting, the strength to control emotions, the ability to work together in a group, understanding good
hygiene, the ability to follow a direction, leaning of limitations, and the strength to accept all actions of the
day to day happenings. The self assurance of a safe environment can be beneficial to learning. As a positive
influence of how one should conduct themselves, I feel confident that that the behavior a child exhibits will be
accepted by society. This fits the category because it gives examples of my desire to influence beyond just the
educational aspect of learning, always focusing on that too. I chose this as my best example of work because
this describes just how hands on I am to develop all avenues of learning, putting in the work to strengthen a
childs well-being in assortment of different areas. I demonstrate the knowledge I have gained by taking the
courses, Foundations, Health, Safety, & Nutrition, Guiding Behavior, and Capstone. I learned the
importance of trying to help a child become a better rounded individual.

The strategies I use to integrate multicultural / anti-bias is to show pride and appreciate all children
for whom they are. The promoting of respect towards all children, accepting children of all walks of life.
When I see that bias or injustice is happening, I work hard to turn the situation with critical thinking to
establish harden positive opinions of accepting all people. Finally, when planning Im creating many
cooperative group activities to bring all cultures together.

Early childhood guidance principles are making all areas of the classrooms development and
learning important. By having there be a sequence to be followed with all learning and development. There
are varying rates in regards of development and learning. The results of this learning are happening through
interactions and experiences. All experiences effect learning. As time passes the development is present with
greater complexity and self regulation. I establish a strong safe connection with the children, making the
environment easier to learn. Finally, it is my objective to challenge the children to enhance learning.

The factors that affect childrens behavior begins with the way I convey myself, the reaction of a
teacher gives children visual examples. Children, whom are sick, have poor eating, physical disabilities,
difficulty with speech and language, along with neurological challenges. There can be over stimulation
environments, and inaccurate expectation of a childs development, and being present of or being a victim of
a form of abuse.

The way I practice positive guidance strategies is by showing the example of what I expect when
giving verbal directions. While watching childrens behaviors being followed in by positive re enforcements
that are strengthened and repeated. Furthermore by developing socialization by smiling, praise, participated
in special activities thought of as a reward when presenting the expected behavior. Finally, using praise can
be effective when its done selective, specific, and positive.

C 1 Guidance Philosophy

While your child is a student of my classroom, open teacher and family communication is of great
importance to me. Learning about the child will better my effectiveness in helping to develop the skills
needed to succeed. The teacher and student connection will be positive and strong, allowing the children to
gain the freedom of acceptance with adults. The socialization skills between peers is established by
cooperative play and activities. The learning of fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and good hygiene will be
the focus for small achievements. All children will learn the structure of rules. The desire is to give children
the ability to advance knowledge and understanding for the next stage of development.

The reason I became a school age teacher a year ago was because of a child with a challenging
behavior. She would tend to act out, throwing chairs, chasing children to make them emotionally upset, and
hitting the teacher.

I believe the behavior was occurring because she knows she can get a rise out of the classroom
teacher, having her become visibly upset, controlling the environment with her actions. She would spend
much time with management.

When I was placed in the room full time, I had a completely different approach. Every classroom has
a telephone present and our first day together she tested me, seeing if I would become emotionally unstable
too. The challenging behavior was that she refused to clean the area she was working in and as I started
walking towards her, she ran for the door. I told her I was not going to chase her, and if she left the room, I
would be calling down to the office to let them know she is in the hallway, and I will have them bring her back
to me. I made it clear that the staying down in the office was over. She let go of the doorknob and proceeded
to clean up the area she was working in. Throughout our time together there were situations every once and a
while, I was consistent with my expectations, and she turned out being one of my biggest helpers. The skills
she needed to have been listening skills and self control. The objective for this example is to explain that
beyond the educational aspects of development, I take pride in helping all children become well rounded in all
areas of learning, emotionally, physically, and temperament.

Looking back on it, I hope I helped guide her in to trusting adults. The approach was to stop the
behavior by not reacting in a situation that can become chaotic.

C 2 Guidance Policy

Children will learn to abide by rules. Children will learn to command the English language.
Children will learn respect for all people. Children will learn good, proper handwashing techniques.
Children will learn cooperative play in a group setting. Children will learn the proper way to handle and use
a pencil. Children will learn how to control the body, keep balance with movement. Children will learn the
proper way to handle books. Children will learn proper table manners.

Every day the students of my classroom participate in Presidential Physical Fitness. This is an
activity that promotes movement with several different exercises. Each child spreads out from around the
room, understanding what personal space is. This helps gain gross motor skills.
