Lesson Plan Title: Perimeter with Missing Lengths

BASIC INFORMATION

DJ Piper

Other Teachers: Katelyn Coty, Liz Weinick

Milieu Counselor: Mr. S.
This lesson will serve as a reinforcement to the previous
lessons on perimeter.
Middle 1 at the Manville School.
8:45am- 9:45am

Flow: 15 minutes of direct instruction.

45: Group Work and Independent work
Math/Perimeter
Instructional Goal Students will be able to identify perimeter even when all
the side lengths are not given.
Students have a solid understanding of perimeter and that
you must add up all the side lengths in order to find the
perimeter.
STANDARDS AND KEY CONCEPTS

1. \3. M.4 Estimate and find area and perimeter of a

rectangle, using diagrams and grids, or by
measuring. .

Big Idea: Understand that perimeter can be found by

adding side lengths, but also by having the perimeter and
some lengths. Students will be able to see that you can
subtract lengths from the total perimeter to find the missing
side lengths.
What do you already know about perimeter?
How do you find perimeter?
Students will be able to identify how to find the perimeter
of different shapes.

Students will be able to infer that with out having all of the
side lengths, one can still find the perimeter.
Language Objectives Students will use language like perimeter, width, lengths
when discussing finding the total length around the shapes.
PERFORMANCE TASKS AND ASSESSMENT

Students will complete an extension to the notes given in

class. The extension has problems like the ones on the
notes, and is used to see if the students can apply what was
discussed before. This is done in groups of 2 or 3 students.
(Depending on if any students are at appointments.)

The assessment comes from the students ability to find the

perimeter correctly with minimal amounts of the teachers
help.
Did students correctly use their prior knowledge on
perimeter to find the perimeter of the shapes.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND RESOURCES

5min: Warm Up (This looks like worksheets that are

previously given to the students at their level)
5min: Interactive Basketball Math game
15 min: Notes on perimeter

Question: Don measured some frame sand wrote the side

lengths and perimeter of each frame on a chart. He spilled
his drink on the chart, so some of the numbers are missing.
Help Don fix his chart by filling in the missing
information.

(This is also on a smart notebook file. This is what you will

show to students.)

The chart may be confusing to students; therefore Ms.

Coty broke them down into shapes so that students could
see them individually. Discuss how to find the perimeter
and have students come to board to write how they would
solve the problem.
Watch for language like: repeated addition, Multiplication

Once notes are complete the options are as follows (Every

student will complete every station):

12 min increments:
Station one with Mr. Piper: Extension of notes Pg. 25-28

Station 2: World Problem with Ms. Weinick

Station 3: Project with Ms. Coty. We have been tracking

when a food truck comes around our school. Students will
create a line plot of the data we have collected.

If students finish each station, then they can proceed to do

fast math on the computer.
Students who have assistive technology, such as an IPad,
will be able to put the worksheets in snap and type.

Ample amount of time will be given to students, and if

students feel they need a break they will be allowed to take
them.

-Smart Board with Page 22-24 on for notes

-Students math binder with pages 22-28 for notes and
extension work.
