Portfolio #10- Lesson Plan
(1) Name of lesson? The Mask of Poetry
(2) Grade Level? 3
(3) Suggested group size? Cooperative groups
(4) Subject? English Language Arts/Reading
(5) Standard? (3)3.4 Identify and compare themes or messages (including authors purpose) in
reading selections [NS/PS 3.3.4]
(6) Objective? The students will understand how to find the message the poem is presenting,
how to use context clues to identify the meaning of a word and how to do research on an author
and the historical time period. The students will also learn to accept peoples differences and
team work.
(7) Materials needed to facilitate the lesson?
- 10 Poems from different authors and time periods
- Computers with Google Chrome and Microsoft PowerPoint
Writing materials
- Pencils
- Highlighters
- Lined Paper
(8) Procedures?
Day 1
Use Microsoft PowerPoint to present the lesson. Read Masks by Shel Silverstein to
introduce the students to the lesson.
Pass out papers with the directions to the lessons to the students.
All the students will get into groups of 3-4.
I will print each group a poem and have them discuss with each other what they think
it means. Have them write them down their opinions on what the poem is about.
I will have them highlight any word they dont know and then look it up. They will
then write down the word and its definition on the same piece of paper that they wrote
their opinions of the poem.
Collect their papers and continue the next day.

Day 2
I will afterwards have them look up the poem on the computers and see if they can
find out the history behind the poem. Like what year it was made, what was going on
during that time and information about the author. They will take notes on their
findings. The notes will be on a separate sheet then the one with the opinion and the
definitions.
If the research takes longer I will extend the lesson to a third day.
Give the students back their notes on their opinion of the meaning of the poem before
the research. They will then reread the poem and see if their opinion on what the
poem is about has changed and discuss with one another about it. They will write
down whether their opinion on the poem has changed and if so write down their new
opinion.
Each group will then present their findings to the whole class. They will read the
poem to the class and then tell them the history of the poem and the author. The
students will explain what they think the poem means and then ask the class to see if
any of the students agree with them or if they feel it means something else.
After the presentations, the students will turn in their notes on the words they didnt
know, their notes on the history of the poem and their opinions of the poem.
Reread Masks by Shel Silverstein to them and see what the students believe the poem
is about. Explain to them that the poem is about accepting each others differences.
(9) Assessment?
I will grade the students on how much they participate in the assignment. (15pt.)
The main parts I will grade are:
- (5pt.) Discussion before they research
o The students are equally discussing what they think the poem is about and wrote
down their opinion.
o The students highlighted the words of the poem they dont know and looked up
the definition.
- (5pt.) Discussion after research
o The students researched the historical time period of the poem and the author.
o The students have written down whether the meaning of the poem for them has
changed.
- (5pt.) They have presented their findings to the class.
