ADEC Learning Outcome:

2NAS1- Recall addition and subtraction facts to 10
Prior Knowledge:
Throughout this lesson, students will develop their addition skills by, providing a suitable
reason that supports their answer. For example, teacher will ask the students: Grade two, when we
add numbers, do you think numbers get bigger or smaller? And why?
Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to add numbers with providing a suitable
reason to support their answer. Therefore, students will learn that there should be a convincible
reason towards any question they are required to answer.

Lesson Activities:
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher will: (Opening will last for 15mins)
Announce the classroom behavioral rules in order to inform all of the students their expected
behavior (discipline/positive) during the lesson. Secondly, the teacher will inform the students what
they will be learning in the lesson (adding numbers numbers and providing a reason). Thirdly, she
will go through the following vocabulary and explain them to the students: more than and adding
on. Fourthly, the teacher will model and show to the students how to add one and two digit numbers.
For example the teacher will write a word problem on the board (9+6) and tell the students: Grade
two, how can we solve this problem? Lets start solving it step by step, so show me number 9 on
your number line. Now, lets move 6 steps to the right side to get our answer. Hence, before the
students answer the teacher will ask them: Do you think our answer will be big number or small
number and why?. In such way, the teacher is enabling the students cognitive skills and she is
allowing them to think and figure out a reason for their answer. As a next step, she will start
explaining and modeling to the students how to subtract two digit numbers. Finally, the teacher will
play a video under the topic addition and she will pause in between and ask the students questions
such as: Grade two, what do we call our total answer? Sum or plus?. Once the students finish
watching the video, they will have an easy quiz to test their understanding.

At the middle of the lesson, the teacher will: (Activities will last for 15mins)
Divide the students into two teams and choose a team leader. Next, inform the students that
they will be playing a game which is called students group and leaders add on. In this game,
students are suppose to have a team leader and group themselves according to the number that will
be given to them by their teacher. As a next step, students are supposed to add on their numbers
when the teacher announces the second number for adding on. Moreover, team members job is to
form the number of students that needs to be formed according to the number that will be announced
by their teacher. Whereas, the team leaders job is to, add on their team members and find the total
answer. For example teacher will say: Grade two, I want you to form a team of five students (both
teams are expected to discuss and form a team of five). Then: Team leaders, I want you to add on
your teams three more and find the total number of your team members. Team leaders will have 50
seconds to add on their teams and find the total answer. Thus, if team leaders failed in
accomplishing the task, they will loose and the teacher will pick up another student from the team in
order to be the team leader.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher will: (Closing will last for 5mins)
Ask the students if they have enjoyed the lesson and what part they enjoyed the most. In
addition, review with them what they have learnt by asking them some questions such as: Grade
two, who can remind me and tell me, in addition numbers become bigger or smaller?. If students
get the answer correct, she will reward them by giving them points according to their teams: Zebras,
Tigers, Elephants, and Rhinos (classroom rewarding system).
Evaluation / Assessment: (Assessment will last for 15mins)
As a last step of the lesson, the teacher will assess her students understanding by giving them
addition worksheets in order for them to complete. Therefore, if students finished the task early they
will be asked to help their friends.
Personal focus:
In this lesson I am working on my time management sills, as well as I will ensure that I am using
simple language within my explanations.
