Course Overview:
What problems do you have to face as a ninth or tenth grader? How do you know what
the best decisions are for your life? Here is an opportunity to examine challenges and
options that teenagers face in high school. The following topics will be emphasized:
-Personal Development and Goal Setting
-Communication and Conflict Resolution
-Developing Positive Relationships
-Understanding Sexuality
-Wise Decision Making Skills
-Healthy Lifestyles
-Teens and the Law
-Substance Abuse and Addiction
This class is a chance to compare your ideas, thoughts, and experiences with your piers.

Grades:
The final grade is made up of classroom participation*, daily activities, homework,
and quizzes, and large group/culminating projects.
*Attendance is very important and the student's learning is best assessed when they are in class.
Students will receive 10 points for regular days and 20 points on block days. Points will be
deducted daily from this score, for each unexcused absence (-10 points) sleeping in class (-10
points) and tardy. (-5 points). If you are absent you will be expected to do a make up assignment.
EVEN IF WE HAVE A GUEST SPEAKER.

Learning Materials or Resources that may be used: Current media and approved speakers from law
enforcement agencies, social service agencies, health clinics, safe-house, and others who can provide
current, relevant info on specific topics are used. District approved Health Curriculum Resources will also
be used.

Special Projects:
Students will participate in leadership projects for the FCCLA through community service activities.
Certificates for each activity will be awarded to students and will include hours contributed.
