1. Explain the differences between contact breaker ignition system with electronic
ignition system.

Control breaker

- The cam lobs on the rotating distributor cause the contact breaker to open and close
thus prounding the switching action for primary circuit.

Electronic ignition system

- The amplifier function as primary circuit switch and therefore replace the contact
breaker.
- Trigger mechanism in distributor provides a trigger signal to amplifier
(eg. Hall Effect or inductive)

2. List the advantages of electronic ignition system.

- High voltage
- Spark timing occur at the correct time at all speed and load

3. Explain the main requirement of electronic ignition system.

- Provide a spark at a spark plug that strong enough to ignite the air-fuel mixture.
- Produce a sufficiently high voltage from the ignition coil at all speed.
- Many thousands of volts (kV) are used to create the spark.
- The spark at the spark plug must produce sufficient heat to cause ignition of mixture.
4. Explain the difference between computer controlled ignition systems with electronic
ignition system.

advanced and read all the data

5. What is ignition advance and why the ignition advanced required in SI engine

- Ignition advance is the spark occur too soon, the gases will start to expand before the
piston reaches TDC and te expansion will try to force the piston down the cylinder
before it has reached TDC.

- Ignition advance is required to SI engine when further increase in speed because the
burn time does in fact not remain constant. Ignition advance also required when engine
operated at light load. A weaker mixture takes longer time to burn.

6. What is knocking in SI engine? What is the system we have controlling the knock.

- The combustion knock occur when over advanced timing. The premature expansion of
the gases will be wasted because the piston is still rising on the compression strike
when the gases are expanding. it cause the engine vibrate.
- To control the knock, the knock sensor was used. It respond to those vibrations in the
engine that cause pressure waves to occur in cylinder block or cylinder head. When
ECU detects a combustion knock signal, it will respond by retarding the spark timing a
predetermined number of degree.

8. What is ignition advance and why the ignition advanced required in SI engine
9. Explain about spark timing in SI engine, why it must occur at the correct time.

- The spark must occur at the correct time at all speeds and loads. When mixture initially
ignited, it must have sufficient time to combust for the gases to begin to expand before
the piston moved too far down the cylinder in the power stroke.

- Ideally, the mixture should initially be ignited just before the piston reaches TDC on
compression stroke. This would allow the mixture to begin to combust and then the
heat causes the gases to start expand just as the piston reaches TDC, the subsequent
expansion of the gases will forces the piston back down the cylinder.

- If sparks occur too soon (over-advanced timing), the gases stat to expand before the
piston reaches TDC. It will cause expansion of the gases to force the rising piston down
before reaching TDC and can result in combustion knock because premature ignition
timing.

- If sparks occur too late (over-advanced timing) expansion of gases will be too late and
the piston will already be on its way down the cylinder during power stroke. Effect of
gas expansion will be wasted.

10. Explain the factors that related to ignition timing advance

Speed related timing advance

- Increases in speed require additional advanced timing, but because burn time not
remain constant (condition within the cylinder change with speed), amount of
additional advanced required for increases in engine speed gradually reduced.

Load within timing advance

- When engine operated at light load, it is possible the engine to operate on weaker
mixture. Weaker mixture takes longer to burn, so spark timing require additional
advance. Temperature and pressure lower hence affect the burning process.
