Name of Lesson Author: Dnae Monford

Unit: The Civil Rights Movement

Title of Lesson: We Are All Different, But the Same
Grade: 3rd grade
Subject: Social Studies

Integration of Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to conduct an experiment on different eggs to see if

they are the same on the inside.
Students will be able to use a microscope to gather data.
Students will be able to understand that we are all the same, regardless of
the color that we are.

Standards:
3.4.3.D3 Collect information about everyday products and systems by asking
questions.
3.2.3.A6 Understand that all scientific investigations involve asking and answering
questions and comparing the answer with what is already known. Use simple
equipment (tools and other technologies) to gather data and understand that this
allows scientists to collect more information than relying only on their senses to
gather information.

NCSS Themes
Individuals, Groups, Institutions- Identify and describe examples of tensions
between and among individuals, groups or institutions and how belonging to more
than one group can cause internal conflicts
Science, Technology & Society- Describe instances in which changes in values,
beliefs, and attitudes have resulted from new scientific and technological knowledge

Anticipatory Set
Teacher will read the book, Same, Same but Different to the class. The
teacher will then discuss how everyone is different, but also the same. The teacher
will show the two-different colored carton of eggs, and tell the students they will
apply this statement to different colored eggs. The teacher will tell the students
they will be doing an experiment to see the differences and similarities of the eggs.
Procedures
1. The teacher will read the book, Same, Same but Different to the class.
2. The teacher will discuss how everyone is different, but also the same.
(making connections with the story and past lessons)
3. The teacher will talk about Jackie Robinson and Jessie Owens
a. The teacher will touch on what contributions they made to sports and
civil rights
b. The teacher will focus on Jackie Robinson, that he broke the color
barrier
i. The teacher will discuss that he was able to get others to see
that even though he was black on the outside, he was just like
everyone else on the inside.
4. The teacher will introduce the science experiment by showing the two-
different colored carton of eggs, and telling the students they will apply this
statement to different colored eggs. The teacher will tell the students they
will be doing an experiment to see the differences and similarities of the
eggs.
a. The teacher will ask the students to come up with a hypothesis (which
will be the eggs will be the same on the inside) and write down
questions they have before the experiment in the space provided on
their worksheet.
5. The teacher will put students into groups of two
a. One student who is proficient in science, the other who struggles
6. The teacher will hand out the necessary materials needed to complete the
experiment
7. The teacher will have students put on gloves and aprons
8. The teacher will tell the students to take their eggs and observe them, taking
not of any differences in how they look.
a. The students will write down their observations on their experiment
worksheet
9. The teacher will have students crack the eggs into two separate glass bowls.
a. The students will be able to utilize their Magnifying lens
b. The students will write down their observations of the eggs yolks on
their sheet.
10.The teacher will have the students whisk the eggs and collect samples of the
eggs using an eye-dropper to place on each slide.
11.The teacher will have students place the slide on the Microscope and observe
and take notes on what they see using their worksheet.
12.After the experiment, the students will clean their workspace with baby
wipes.
13.The teacher and students will discuss their findings as a class.
a. The teacher will discuss with them that their hypothesis of the eggs
being the same regardless of color is correct. The teacher will make the
connection that we are all different on the outside, but we are all
people.
14.The teacher will pass out their science journals and the students will write a
reflection of their experiment.
a. The students will also be able to write down their thoughts about the
questions they wrote down prior to having the experiment.
15.The teacher will collect their journals when they are finished to review them.
Differentiation

The kinesthetic learners will be targeted by the hands-on science experiment.

The visual learners will benefit from being able to visually see that even
though the eggs have different colors, the inside of the eggs all contain the
same things.
The auditory learners will benefit from hearing examples in the book how we
can be so different, yet so alike.
The linguistic learners will benefit from having to write down all the
information findings onto their science experiment papers.

Closure: The students will be able to write in their journals what they learned during
the experiment. They will be able to look back at the questions they had prior and
reflect on them. They will use this time to reflect on their hypothesis, that everyone
is all the same regardless of outer appearance.

Formative / Summative Assessment

Teacher will assess the students based on their science journals to see if they
made connections from the experiment to the discussion of being different,
but the same.
Teacher will review their science experiment worksheets to see if students
correctly went through the process of the experiment and wrote down their
findings. This will be graded.

Egg Experiment!
Materials:

Hypothesis:

Visual findings: Write down the differences you see looking at the eggs.

Egg cracking: Using the magnifying glass, what difference do you see between the
eggs
Microscope visuals: What difference do you see now that the eggs are under a
microscope?

Results: Was your hypothesis correct?
