20 Important Benefits of Music In Our Schools. National Association for Music Education

(NAfME), National Association for Music Education, 25 Jan. 2017,

www.nafme.org/20- important-benefits-of-music-in-our-schools/. Accessed 3 Mar.

2017.

This article demonstrates and exclaims the benefits of having music education in

common core. A few of the points the resource made were based on academic

success for students as well as coordination enhancement and pattern recognition. As this

article shows, there are many benefits that have been tested and have been proven to be

accurate according to students results of the scientific tests. The exams that were given to

students tested their memory skills, language and reasoning, and auditory skills. This

source also mentions the sense of achievement that students feel with completing

challenging assignments. The value of this site is shown by the diligence of

having interest in the music education programs and how many supporters are trying to

keep the arts alive by remaining in school. According to the National Association for

Music Education, many programs are designated to solely saving music

departments by raising money and awareness of the decrease of music education. This

article was very useful as it gave several examples of how beneficial the music

department could be to students across the country. I will be using this to show the

positives of why music should be kept in common core education.

Cerbasi, Jennifer. How Important Is Music Education in Schools? Fox News, FOX News

Network, 28 Mar. 2012, www.foxnews.com/health/2012/03/28/how-important-is-

music- education-in-schools.html. Accessed 3 Mar. 2017.

In this reliable news website, methods of musical learning are mentioned as ways to

expand childrens mind to different concepts and to use music as more than just a

hobby. The supporters of music education decided to create a Music In Our Schools

Month to celebrate the benefits of musics involvement in education and to

encourage to continue enhancing the programs even if budget problems arise. The

news article also mentions scientific studies of the benefits that music has on intellect.

This consists of a test that measured standardized tests for students who are involved

in music, and students that arent. The results showed that there was a significant

difference in scores. The students with musical backgrounds were seen to have better

scores. An observation from Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math,

Science, and Technology for high school students showed that all the past winners had

experience with one or more instruments and the supporters of music education

believe that music is a true factor of academic success. Supporters have been raising

awareness of the decrease in availability for musical courses in order to raise money to

maintain the classes for students who are interested in music. This source has

proven to be valuable by showing how music is able to influence intellect, as

well as performance in regular academic courses. I will be using this source in my

paper to show the support of people and how people are willing to raise money in order

to save music education.

Parsad, Basmat. Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools: 1999-2000 and

2009-10. Washington DC, U.S. Department of Education, 2013, nces.ed.gov/

pubs2012/2012014rev.pdf. Accessed 1 Mar. 2017.

This e-book was very informational as to art and music education and how it relates to

common core. The source gave real-life examples of children and teens who have

used music to help with their studies and how differences are made through having

music and art available in the curriculum of their school. In the book, it provided a

variety of graphs and examples of studies that further continued the question of if

music and art education could be valuable to common core standards. The source

demonstrated the different types of schools that are involved in art education and how they

relate and differ from others such as Charter, Secondary, and Private schools. This

source not only shows the difference additional artistic courses make in

students, but they show the differences in teachers workloads and stress levels. This

e-book shows the positive impacts that music education makes in schools across

the country.

In conclusion, this resource provides valuable information and shows both sides of the

spectrum by including facts about music and about academics and how they can

intertwine and create the best course availability and school curriculum

possible.
Pellegrinelli, Lara. Music Education In Public Schools Gets A Passing Grade. NPR, NPR, 6

This site is a developed article from NPR.org. In the article, it tells about the differences

between low income schools, such as public school, and high income schools. The

evidence shown in the site makes it clear that the availability of music depends on

the type of school, and on the financial status of the school. Between the years of

1999-2000, the average of high poverty secondary schools that offered music was 100%. That

percentage has dropped to 81% today and is continuously dropping. The article

includes information regarding teachers and how they collaborate with more

teachers in order to reach full academic achievement in not just arts, but in other

subjects as well.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan spoke about how students with disabilities and even

English language learners can benefit from arts classes because they often dont

get the proper learning environments or are sometimes at a disadvantage from the lack of

proper curriculum courses.

One of the main points talked about in this site is how to create and teach young adults

how to achieve success, and it is proven that music is one of the strong factors

that contributes to how students perform in higher academics and outcomes. To think

about how the world could look with a raising percent of academically achieved

students would be something to celebrate. This source was useful because it gave actual

percentages and gave examples of how teachers make differences in schools. Ill be
using this information in my paper to demonstrate how teachers play a role in the school

system and to portray the different types of students that has potential and reason to learn

music.
