Why we cannot curtail environmental policy for economic growth

Anderson, Kevin, et al. From Long-Term Targets to Cumulative Emission Pathways:

Reframing UK Climate Policy. Energy Policy, 36, 10, 2008, 3714-3722.

This journal gives information on Englands plan to reduce its carbon budget. According

to the article, The UK plans on a 60% emissions cut by 2050 by reducing their carbon

emissions budget and exploring future alternative sources for their long-term emissions reduction

target. With increased funding in renewable energy, the U.K. has similar goals with America to

mitigate climate change.

This will help my paper by giving goals of other countries in their efforts to reduce

carbon emissions. England is following Americas lead, and if we divert from the path toward

reducing carbon emissions, we will set a negative example. This helps my paper with the

argument that we cannot reduce our funding toward renewable energy as well as government

programs dedicated to environmental protection.

The authors of this article are all meteorologists from the University of Cambridge. This

journal is peer-reviewed and gives accurate information on Englands emissions policy.

Capelln-Prez, Iigo, Margarita Mediavilla, Carlos De Castro, scar Carpintero, and Luis

Javier Miguel. "Fossil fuel depletion and socio-economic scenarios: An integrated

approach." Energy 77 (2014): 641-66. Web.

This Journal shows fossil fuel consumption and depletion models with factors such as

peak oil consumption and population growth. It points out the need for renewable energy sources

to take the place of non-renewable energy sources on a large scale. Developing these energy
sources will take a long time and as of now are nowhere near the technical levels needed to take

the place of nonrenewable sources. Fossil fuel extraction has already hit its peak and although we

have found areas untapped, as demand rises, these non-renewable energy sources will be

depleted in a matter of decades. The models in this study are adjusted for future factors such as

GDP Growth, population growth, advancements in technology, and areas of untapped resources.

This study will give my paper the statistics needed to make the claim for renewable

energy sources. These sources will soon need to be substituted in the place of fossil fuels on a

large scale. These technologies must be developed and exploited before fossil fuels are depleted.

This will make the case for conservation and slow implementation of renewable resources. The

economic constraints of developing these energies must be lifted before it is too late.

Dunlap, Riley E., and Aaron M. McCright. Routledge Handbook of Climate Change and

Society. Sociological Quarterly, 52, 2, 2011, 243-245

This chapter, from the Routledge Handbook of Climate Change and Society, gives us

the history of big oil companies lobbying for the U.S. government to deny anthropogenic climate

change. This shielded the big oil companies from environmental policy making for decades until

the 1997 Kyoto conference gave irrefutable evidence that climate change is human caused. Most

oil companies abandoned their claims, but some still aid the government to keep this argument

alive.
This scholarly journal will help my paper by giving the history of the governments

refusal toward anthropogenic climate change. This will aid my argument by giving facts that the

denial is nothing more than a government cash out by big oil companies.

This book is written by a multitude of authors who specialize in everything from

economics to environmentalism. It is a scholarly journal that gives the reader information on

everything one needs to know about climate change and its effect on society.

"FACT SHEET: Overview of the Clean Power Plan." EPA, Environmental Protection Agency,

27 June 2016. Web.

This record on the EPA website shows the overview of the Clean Power Plan enacted by

the Obama administration in 2015. The policy plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,

specifically CO2, by the year 2030. This plan puts the United States at the forefront of the global

effort to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This article jots the benefits and implementation

plans of the policy. It also gives information about the dangers of continued greenhouse gas

emissions. This article makes a clear argument that non-renewable energy sources is a direct

cause of climate change.

This article will be beneficial to my paper for its information about greenhouse gas

emissions, and its information regarding the implementation of environmental policy. President

Trump is already trying to rescind this policy and hinder the global effort to stop climate change.

This article also gives facts toward the economic benefit of slowing down greenhouse gas

emissions. It makes clear the correlation between burning fossil fuels and climate change.
This summary of the Clean Power Plan is on the EPA website and gives social and

economic benefits of clean power as well as the drawbacks of non-renewable energy. This article

gives accurate estimations of future progress if the policy is implemented to its fullest potential.

"Global Climate Change: Effects." NASA, NASA, 16 June 2016. Web.

This informative site shows the future effects of climate change due to greenhouse gas

emissions. Soon, we will see rising sea levels, agricultural problems, social and recreational

problems, etc. If we do not act now, our children and grandchildren will suffer the consequences.

CO2 emissions have risen by since the start of the industrial revolution.

This article will support my argument to keep environmental policy. This looks at the

outcome of continued use of fossil fuels and the effect it will have on our planet. Policies enacted

by former president Obama are heading us in the right direction. Cutting these policies will hurt

us socially and economically.

This article is on the NASA website. The information was gathered by qualified

employees of NASA.

Mann, Michael E., et al. The Likelihood of Recent Record Warmth. Scientific Reports, 6,

2016.

This article gives scientific evidence arguing climate change is irrefutably of

anthropogenic cause. It tells us that there is a one-in-650 million chance that the observed run of

global temperature records would be expected to occur in the absence of human-caused global

warming. This confirms that without the increased carbon emitted by humans, climate change

would not be an issue. It also tells us that 13 of the last 15 years were the hottest on record.
This article will help my paper by supporting the argument that climate change is caused

by humans. The government is set on the idea that global temperature rise is not of human cause.

This scholarly article gives evidence to the contrary. I will use the evidence in this article to

support the idea that environmental protection is an important sector for our government.

"Renewables Now Cheapest, But How to Enable Faster Renewable Energy Growth?"

CleanTechnica. N.p., 23 Jan. 2017. Web.

This article tells us that renewable energies like solar and wind power are cheaper than

fossil fuel energy such as coal and oil. It also says that jobs in renewable energy in the U.S. are at

more than 400,000, compared to coal related Jobs at 70,000. Renewable energy is cheaper and

creates more jobs.

This will help my paper by giving the advantages of clean energy. Moving to a

completely renewable energy grid is in sight and the only thing stopping it is the presidents goal

to be energy independent and make coal our number one source of energy. If we focus on

renewable energy rather than natural gas, a cleaner future for ourselves and our environment will

be obtainable.

This article is written by an expert on solar energy who is also the chief editor of

CleanTechnica. This article gives direct quotes from world leaders who are working toward the

widespread use of renewable energy.

Richerzhagen, Carmen, and Imme Scholz. Chinas Capacities for Mitigating Climate
Change. World Development, 36, 2, 2008, 308-324.

This academic article explains the changes that China is trying to make toward its

environmental policy on energy and transportation. Although policies have been made, the

implementation has been unsuccessful. This is due to Chinas main interest in economic growth.

As the developing country works to grow its economy, its plan to reduce greenhouse gas

emissions is failing. This is because economic growth and command for energy are positively

correlated. You cannot grow an economy and reduce emissions at the same time, no matter what

regulations are put in place. The article makes clear that china is the second largest emitter of

greenhouse gasses, behind the U.S.

This study will help my paper by introducing the correlation between economic growth

and greenhouse gas emissions. China is trying to cut down on its emissions but cannot, due to its

growing economy. Environmental policy will affect countries that specialize in manufacturing. In

the long-run, lack of policy will be detrimental to our economy. Continued rates of fossil fuel

consumption will threaten total depletion and human health.

This article is written by German scientists with expertise in climate change and

emissions. It gives scientific data and predictions for the future of china and the rest of the world.

This article was written in 2008 so the information may be slightly out dated.

Thomas, Chris et al. Extinction Risk from Climate Change. Letters to Nature, Nature, 427,

2004, 145-148.

This scholarly journal gives us information on the threat of climate change and global

extinction patterns. These extinctions are due to rising temperatures and habitat loss. By 2050, up
to 37% of worlds species could be in threat of extinction. Fossil fuel consumption will not only

threaten other species, but eventually mankind.

This journal will benefit my paper by giving more justification to why cutting

environmental protection programs will hurt us greatly. The Trump administration claims this is

to grow our economy, but this will do nothing more than hurt it.

Warner, Mark E., et al. Damage to Photosystem II in Symbiotic Dinoflagellates: A Determinant

of Coral Bleaching. PNAS, 96, 14, 1999, 8007-8012

This scholarly journal gives information on the death of coral reefs due to worsening

climate change. Climate change has affected ocean temperatures and acidification, and as a

result, is killing our oceans coral reefs. The symbiotic organisms, vital for coral growth and life,

are dying. With the death of the coral comes the destruction of the biggest ecosystems on the

planet. This is just one way that anthropogenic climate change is affecting Earth.

This will help my paper by giving information on the reasons why climate change is a

threat. A 2 change in average temperatures does not seem like a lot, but it is affecting us more

than most people know. This will support my argument by making the case to not cut

government programs associated will environmental protection.

This scholarly journal is written by experts in ocean biology. The data is slightly outdated

but gives us information that this has been on ongoing problem for decades.
