Social Class

I am a helot in the Greek society. I am a part of the city state of Sparta.

My name is Augusta and I am a male who is 30 years old. Being a helot

means that I am a semi free worker with my complete dependence on my

employer on the farm. I cannot be bought and sold like a normal slave of the

Spartan societyI am not property of any one given citizen. I work under

contract for my given employer. I am given limited benefits and other

incentive things. However, I do not have any real security because I am not a

legal citizen and therefore I do not have very much protection. Although I am

above the slaves in social class standing, I am still treated very harshly and

some of my friends have even been killed because of them not working hard

enough and not obeying their employer. I was required to go to war in certain

cases. Although this may seem bad, it was a good thing because if I join the

armed forces and fight well I can earn an escape from my lot on the farm and

enter into the intermediary social class. This class is not a full citizen but I

am at the same level as those individuals who have parents of mixed

ancestry.

My duties and responsibilities consisted of whatever my employer has

for me. I do different things on the farm for him. I do typical farming duties

such as planting and collecting food. As I said earlier, if I do not take care of

my responsibilities I often can get beat by my employer. I do not like my

position in life because I do not have much of a chance to move up in the

social latter.
