As per spec. 10066A-9- As per PGESCO Specs, it is mandatory to use the latest
3DS-E47-00001 item standards. The latest edition of NACE RB-0169 is NACE SP-
6.8 target max. shall 0169 2013. In SP 0169 section 6 paragraph 6.2 there are three
be -2.0 Vdc and target Cathodic protection criterion:
min shall be -0.85 Vdc 1. The old and conventional -850 mv on potential
2. - 850 mv off potential
3. The 100 mv shift criteria
- The -850 mv is easy to achieve during construction. After
operation, maintaining -850 mv is almost impractical, hence
the code introduced the 100 mv shift criteria as realistic and
practical criteria to fully protect the pipes.
- To maintain the -850 mv, it will be the operator
responsibility to achieve a perfect flange isolation with an
insulation values exceeding mega ohms. This was found
impractical due to the following:
1. Internal pipe fluid conductance will decrease the pipe
flange insulation value than mega ohms values. The
insulation will become in kilo ohms values which will
reduce the protection potential and will create internal
flange corrosion.
2. Very high maintenance cost and activities are required
to achieve the insulation values at all times which is
very difficult to achieve during operation.
3. In case client would insist to achieve -850 on criteria in
a highly conductive fluid, in order to achieve the
required flange insulation from above ground to
underground long insulating joints shall be required
instead of the insulating flange kit.
