About Myself

From the very start I should say that it is not an easy thing to speak about myself as it is hard to have
a look at yourself from aside, but at the same time who knows you better than you yourself do?
I am a girl of sixteen. When I look at myself in the mirror I see a blond girl with short straight hair,
dark eyes and slander figure. As to my appearance I'm rather tall and slim. I have never thought I'm
a beauty I whish I were more beautiful. I think that I'm even tempered, rather reserved, calm and
modest. But sometimes I can lose my tempo and become either angry or sad. I like staying alone and
sometimes I retire into my shell. But at the same time I like my friends, I like to laugh and joke. I
have got a sense of humor. It means I understand humor and appreciate it.
There are many things in our life I like and some I dislike. I like when everything is OK. Being
happy is one way of being wise. I like to study because knowledge is useful sometimes. I'm fond of
reading as it gives not only knowledge, but wonderful moments of joy and pleasure. I am neither
short nor tall, so I like to wear high heeled shoes, trousers or jeans.
I was born on the 25th of April 1985 in the town of Molodechno where I live now together with my
parents and my younger sister (older brother). My early years which I remember badly, were typical
of a child living in a town. I was born in a family of a teacher and a doctor. I was sent to a
kindergarten at the age of three as both the parents were working. As all the children of Belarus I
went to school at the age of six. Here I should say that it was my lucky chance to study for 11 years
at the school of fine arts in the town of Molodechno . it turned out to be the best school in our town.
There I got a proper training in such subjects as English, Russian and Belarusian literature and world
culture. I usually did a lot of home preparation for them and I liked everything I was doing in them. I
really tried hard in them. But despite my efforts I was not good at Math.
School for me was not only lessons and learning I had a lot of friends there. We organized extra
class activities such as parties and other social activities. I actively participated in most of them.
I am sociable, so I have got a lot of friends among my schoolmates. As for me I appreciate people's
honesty, kindness, sense of justice and intelligence. I don't like when people are rude and aggressive.
I am stubborn at times. But to my mind being persistent is not always a bad thing. It means my aim,
I never leave things half done. At times I feel dissatisfied with myself, especially when I fail to do
something or can't do things the way they should be done. At the same time I think I am hard-
working and diligent. My greatest problem at school was talking in front of the class. I always
blushed and went red.
Very soon I'll pass my final exams at school and after a farewell party at the end of the June I'll say
good-bye to my teachers who are very well-educated people with broad outlook and deep
knowledge of the subjects. They encouraged me in my desire of choosing my future career. School
meant a lot to me and it wasn't just learning and studying. I had made good friends there and met
many interesting people. I faced a new life without school with a mixed feeling of sadness and joy.
I had asked myself a lot of times what I wanted to be when I left school. A few years ago it was
difficult to give a definite answer. As the years passed I changed my mind several times. But it was
only in my last year at school that I finally made up my mind what profession I would most like to
have in future. I realized that my strongest desire was to continue specializing in humanities and
learn foreign languages in particular. I hope my dream will come true. If I fail in my exams I'll try to
enter the University again.
And now a few words about my inclinations. I haven't got any special hobby, like collecting
something but I'm fond of reading books. They give me more knowledge of their people's lives and
feelings and broaden my outlook. In my opinion, books are a source of emotional inspiration and
romantic feeling . besides, books help me to continue my own education. The time spend on a good
book is never wasted. Reading is a rewarding pasting.
And of course I like music! I'm fond of music of the 60-s, like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and
Elvis Priestly. The songs of the Beatles give me much delight and pleasure. Besides, I am a great
theatre-goer. Whenever I have some time to spare, I go to the theatre. I'm not keen on television.
Sometimes I play different sport games for health and pleasure. I usually play such games as volley-
ball, basketball, tennis, and sometimes football.
And the last thing I would like to tell you about things I hope to achieve in my life are: to have a
very successful career, so this year after finishing school I try to enter the University, to build the
home of my dreams and to find someone in my life to share all that with.
My Family
I am Zhilin Andrey. Andrey is my name and Zhilin is my surname. I am seventeen years old. I want
to tell you a few words about my family. My family is not large. I have got mother, father and
grandmother. There are four of us in the family.
First of all some words about my parents. My mother is a teacher of biology. She works in a school.
She likes her profession. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair. She is 44 but she looks
much younger.
My father is computer-programmer. He is forty-six. My father often sings and when we are at home
and have some free time I play the guitar and we sing together. He is also handy with many things.
When he was small he liked to take everything to pieces. My grandmother told me a story that ones
my father tried to repair their kitchen clock but with out success. They had to give it to a repairman.
But it happened a long time ago. Now he can fix almost everything.
My parents have been married for 18 ears. They have much in common, but they have different
views on music, books, and films. For example my father likes horror films and my mother likes
soap operas. My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesnt go in for sports.
My parents are hard working people. My mother keeps house and takes care of my father and me.
She is very good at cooking. My grandmother is a pensioner. She lives with us and helps to run the
house. She is fond of knitting.
I want to become a student. Id like to learn foreign languages. I always try to be in a good mood.
We have got a lot of relatives.
My Favorite Sport
All kinds of sports and games are cultivated in our country as well as in England, the USA and other
countries of the world. Tennis, hockey, volley-ball and football have become very popular in Russia.
Football is my favorite sport. The term football is understood differently in the US and Britain.
For a British football is the same as what is known to be in our country.
For an American football means rugby, while the game usually played here in Russia is known
as soccer. Soccer is played by two teams, equal in number, each consisting of eleven players. Tills
is, properly speaking, genuine football, the ball being driven only by the feet. The eleven players
take up their position on the field. The centre forward stands at the centre. On the right are the inside
right and the outside right, on the left are the inside left and the outside left. The three half-backs are
stationed behind the forward line.
The goal is protected by the right back, the left back and the goalkeeper. No handling is allowed
except by the goalkeeper. Excellent technique, flexible modern tactics and good teamwork are
characteristic features of modem football.
My Flat
I live in a 5-stored block of flats in Yushno Sakhalinsk. Its not a very picturesque plaice but we
have a yard and a Kodak Express under the window.
My flat is on the third floor. Its very comfortable and well planed. I have all modern conveniences,
such as central heating, electricity, cold and hot running water and a telephone. There are three
rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a balcony in it. The largest room in my flat is the living room. My
family uses it as a sitting room. There is a sofa, two armchairs, a coffee table, a TV set and a VCR
(video) in it.
We have two small rooms in our flat and one of them is my. It is not big but very cozy. There is a
wardrobe near the wall and a desk near the window. My bad is at the left corner. I like my room
wary much because it is my room.
Our kitchen is not very large but light. Its very well equipped. We have got a refrigerator, a
microwave oven, a coffee maker and a toaster. In evenings we like have tea and have rest in it.
My Future Profession
What I would like to become? This question passels me greatly. Every job has its elements of
difficulties and interest. I think that nearly all the professions are very important in life. But to
choose the right occupation is very difficult, because we must take in to consideration many factors.
We must consider our personal taste and our kind of mind. At the same time we must satisfy the
requirements of our society and peoples needs in one profession or another.
The end of school is the beginning of an independent life, the beginning of a more serious
examination. In order to pass that very serious exam we must choose the road in life which will help
us best to live and work. Each boy and girl has every opportunity to develop mind and use
knowledge and education received at school. Some may prefer to work in factories or works, others
want to go into construction: to take part in building power stations and new towns. Many
opportunities to work and to satisfy at the same time the requirements of the society and your own
personal interest are offered in the sphere of the services transport, communications and many
others.I have a specially liking for to become a programmist. I like this profession because it very
interest.
My School
I had just left school and I would like to tell you a few words about it. I went to school in 1988. This
school I studied in is a three stored building. When you enter the school yard you can see poplar
trees and beautiful flowers. To the right of the school building there is a big playground. When the
weather was fine we had our classes in physical training there. When you enter the school you come
in to a large hall and a cloak-room, there we left our coats, rain-coats and jackets. On the ground
floor where also a school library and a gym is. The class rooms, the assembly hall, the teachers
room and the canteen are on the upper floors. On the walls of the corridors you can see the portraits
of famous writers, poets, scientists and our school wall newspaper. It is done by the pupils of our
school and has a lot of interesting things to read. I learned different subjects at school: Russian,
English, maths, physics, chemistry, geography, history and some others.
My favorite subjects were Russian and English. I also liked literature. I was good at these subjects
and usually got good marks in them. I worked hard at English lessons: read and translated texts,
made up dialogues, did a lot of ex, but best of all I liked different tests, I was fond of grammar. But I
was poor in chemistry. I always failed to learn formulas and terms properly. I liked my class,
everybody was so friendly easy to get along with. I was on good terms with my class maids and we
often spend our free time together.
My summer holidays
After my hard and busy school year my summer holidays began. I felt happy and began to plan a lot
of wonderful things to do during my summer vocation.
I was dreaming about far South countries I always wanted to visit. For example I dreamed to visit,
Greece islands or Singapore beaches. But I had to go to the Azove seaside with my relatives. The
water was very warm there because you know Azove Sea isnt deep. There were a lot of beautiful
fair trees and bushes there. There were different kinds of entertainments there. Some kinds of water
Mountains and water scooters and discos.
There was nothing to do all day except lying in the sun and get a wonderful tan. I was playing with
my little sister on the sand and in the waves teaching her to swim. Later on I returned to Kherson
and spend some time in town going out with my friends, reading, listening to music, watching TV,
playing computer games. After that I went to the sports camp where I spent seven days with my
friends.
It was very useful experience for us because we had to get up very early, to train a lot, and to rest
very little. But it made us stronger and healthier.
I was very happy to return home and to spend several days in my summer cottage, I helped my
grand-pa to dig the garden, to water plants, and to gather fruits and vegetables. I was fishing with
my grand-pa sometime successfully and we were cooking our fish together. Only humorous insects
were spoiling my good humor. I was enjoying floating in the boat swimming in the river and helping
my grandparents.
During my summer holidays I made many new friends, read a lot of interesting books.
Got to know a lot of useful things. Now I feel ready to get back to school.
I am happy to meet my friends and teachers.
Seasons
Winter, spring, summer and autumn are the seasons of the year. December, January and February are
winter months. The weather is cold usually it snows. The days are short and the nights are long. The
rivers and lakes freeze and we can go skating and skiing. March, April and May are spring months.
It is very nice season. The weather is fine it is warm. There are many green trees in the streets in the
parks and in the yards. Some time it rains but usually the sun shines brightly. The birds return from
the hot countries and make their nests. June, July and August are summer months. It is hot or warm.
The days are long and the nights are short. There are many nice flowers in the parks and squares in
the summer.
The pupils do not go to school they have the summer holidays. June is the first month of summer.
We have the longest day and the shortest night in the year on the 21st-22nd of June. July is the
middle month of summer. It is hot and sun shines brightly. The sky is blue and cloudless. August is
the last summer month some times it is cold in August, but it is many mushrooms, berries and fruits.
September, October and November are autumn months. The weather is changeable. It often rains.
You can see yellow, red, brown leaves everywhere. It is time for gathering the harvest.
Why do we Learn the English Language
It is necessary to learn foreign languages. That's why pupils have got such subject as a foreign
language at school. Everybody knows his own language, but it is useful to know foreign languages. I
learn English, because I understand that I can use it. For example, if I go to England I'll be able to
speak English too. English is used not only in England, but also in other countries. I learn English
because I want to read foreign literature in the original. I know and like such English and American
writers as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and others. I understand that I must learn English. If I know
English well, I'll be able to go to the library and take books by English and American writers in the
original. I like to travel. But it is difficult to visit countries, when you don't know the language of
these countries. If I know the language of the country, where I am going to, it will be easy do travel
there. If I want to ask something, I can do it in English. I like to read books. And I like to read
newspapers, too. If I know, for example, English I'll be able to read English newspapers and
magazines. Knowledge of different countries to understand each other, to develop friendship among
them. For example, we have a foreign exhibition in Moscow. If is easy for me to visit this exhibition.
You can see a lot of advertisement, signboard, names in the streets. They are in foreign languages.
Very often they are in English. If you know English, you can read and understand them. Now we
bay many clothes from other countries. If you know English well, you can read something about the
size of this or that thing. It is clear for you what it is made of. There are a lot of films in foreign
languages. If you know them, you can understand films without any help. There are international
friendship camps in the world. If you can speak foreign languages, it will be easy for you to visit
such camps and speak with the boys, girls, men, women who do not know Russian. In short, I
understand that I have to learn English in a proper way and I try to do it.
What Makes a Person Educated
Of course we get education at school. The activities of the school day afford different chances for
pupil's self-perfection. They provide many opportunities for deeper study and developing our talents.
But school lays only the base, the foundation of our education. Here we get only necessary
knowledge and after graduating the school we can continue studying in the universities, institutes or
somewhere else. Not only school makes us educated persons. Reading books and press is also very
important. It enriches our outlook, broadens the boundaries of our intellect, and offers the
opportunities to read the latest news and political discussions. TV also gives us wonderful and
effective possibilities for education. Due to mass media we become better informed by watching
documentaries, science programs and discussions. It is the principal role of after-school activities to
deepen our knowledge in different subjects. Besides regular schools there are a lot of clubs, where
children get education and good habits. There are different groups, where children can succeed in
the field they are particularly interested in. Art clubs, Drama and history clubs and groups, studying
foreign languages, are among them. Educational excursions can be also useful in developing the
pupil's intellect. Nature hikes help to explore the world around us. To my mind if we want to be
successful in our studies we must have the number of positive qualities of character. First of all we
have to be attentive at the lessons. Attention always helps to acquire profound knowledge and to
understand the material better. To make progress in all subjects we should be hard-working and
persistent persons. Strong-willed and industrious people can stand up all difficulties and hardships
and they have a purpose in life. So if we want to be well educated, we ought to have all these
qualities in ourselves, only in these conditions we can succeed in our studies. I think that all people
should be educated, because it is very useful and important. Educated persons are always ready to
find a good job, they usually have a bright career. Besides, it is also much better to talk to educated,
cultured and extraordinary person. I consider knowledge to be the really great power and that is why
we must always increase it.
Visit to a Doctor
The problem of health always worried people. It has been in the center of attention of the scientists
since ancient times. Perhaps, of all unpleasant things people hate diseases most of all.
In theory we know well what we should do to be healthy, but in practice there is hardly a man who
has no problems with his health. Sometimes people, who are very busy aren't thoughtful enough
about their health.
Of course, much has been done to put an end to a great number of diseases and epidemics. The
scientists have already found cures for many diseases, afflicting people. But still we are suffering
from many of them.
One of the diseases which disappeared at all is a smallpox. It's a terrible virus disease.
First we can read about it in ancient Egyptians manuscripts, which were written nearly 6000 years
ago, in ancient documents of China and India. Abu Ali Ebu Sina was the first man who gave detail
description of smallpox. Nobody knows the exact time of it's appearing in Europe. There were great
epidemics in Italy, France and in a lot of others. In the 17-18 centuries in Europe every year 10
million died.
In the 16 century smallpox came to American continent with Spanish colonists and caused terrible
epidemics among the Indians. Later this disease came to Australia.
Smallpox killed a lot people and Edward Jenner invented vaccination from it. It was a very great
invention the first vaccination in the world.
This disease disappeared at all and in December 1979 the fact in liquidation of it was confirmed.
I must say, that I seldom fall ill. I go in for sports, try to spend a couple of hours in the open air
every day and do all that kinds of things in order to keep fit.
But, unfortunately, I fell ill in winter. It was rather cold outside and I probably caught the infection.
When I came home I felt that I had a sore-throat. I made hot tea with honey, but it didn't help. At last
I decided to go to the doctor. I went there with my friend, for I felt very bad indeed.
When we came, a doctor, a kind-hearted middle-aged woman in a white gown, offered me to sit
down and asked me what I complained of. I had a terrible headache and sore throat and it ached me
to swallow. Besides, I was constantly sneezing and coughing. It turned out that I was running a high
temperature.
The doctor examined my throat, sounded my heart and lungs, had my blood pressure tested. She said
it was flu and prescribed some pills and mixture - I had to take medicine 3 times a day before meals
and to stay in bed for a week until full recovery.
The recovery was slow. I slept badly, had no appetite. I suffered from a slight, but irritating cough
which as a rule became worse at night. I followed all the doctor's instructions and in a week I was
cured. It was a real pleasure to fell strong and healthy again. Really, all is well, that ends well.
