Hunderts Article

After reading the article and discussing with the group, we feel that Anna Hundert as a whole
was accurate with the claims that she made. Especially with the observation that high school
seniors are taught to write in a formulaic method that leads to a generic essay. Hunderts article
discussed multiple lessons that we were taught in high school that may not have been the best
for writing academic papers in college. There were so many standards and guidelines that we
were told if we obeyed then we would receive a good grade. Often times though, obeying those
guidelines resulted in us losing our voice and our own style throughout the paper. Now in
college, we are being encouraged to use our voice and to interact with our sources and
background knowledge. We are supposed to challenge the text and idea of what is written
rather than simply agreeing or disagreeing. Though Anna Hunderts article discusses many of
these ideas, there are a few that our group has thought of in addition that we believe could have
been mentioned. An additional critique that Hundert could have argued was that in high school,
our structural approach may have been too structural. In high school, outlines and brainstorming
took the majority of the time in the writing process and forced some students to conform to such
guidelines, which inevitably caused these students lose their own creative and distinctive voice
and style. Now, in college, we are given more structural freedom which may not be such a bad
thing. This claim leads into our other additional critique, which is that Hundert could have also
argued the importance of our voice. Though she mentioned this idea in her article, we believe
that this should have been more strongly discussed. In our college writing courses we are often
encouraged to find our voice and to really have our presence known in the paper rather than
merely just stating the sources and then summarizing them. Finding our style has been
something we have been challenged to do all semester, particularly in this writing course we are
currently taking. Overall, Hunderts article has multiple strong arguments and claims being both
accurate and personally relatable.
