Message from the
mayor of Sullivans
Dear Island Neighbors,

Things to know in May

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE
This Tuesday, May 2, there will be an
important municipal election for the Town of
Sullivans Island. The election is to fill three
Council seats and one Mayoral seat. All are for
four year terms. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
on that day at Sunrise Presbyterian Church
(3222 Middle Street). We are grateful to Rev.
Vance Polley and the members of Sunrise for
again providing their facility (with lots of easy Pat O'Neil
parking) for this important Town event.
You can get more info about this election at bit.ly/2017SIELECTION
THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR POLICE
At the request of the Tri-County Fraternal Order of Police, by
proclamation we have formally designated May 14-20 as Police Week
in the Town of Sullivans Island, and declared that Council publicly
salutes the service of law enforcement officers in our community and
communities across the nation. What an easy decision.
This is in keeping with the national observance (since 1994) of May
15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which commemorates
the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. It is one of
only two days each year when the Federal Government orders flags to
be flown at half-staff. (The other, of course, is Memorial Day.)
So please, when you have a chance, thank our Town police officers,
and those who assist during our busy season (our Beach Service
Officers and County Deputies). Thank them for what they do, and
let them know that their service and courage matterin all seasons.
POLICE CHIEF SEARCH UPDATE
Speaking of our police department and as mentioned previously,
I have appointed a Search Committee to help fill this important
position. Our initial tasks were to draw up the position description
and list of qualifications after consideration of the Towns current
and anticipated needs. We have accomplished that and are now
advertising the opening through appropriate means. We will consider
both internal and external candidates for this very important Town
position.
You may have read recently about the staffing difficulties experienced
by law enforcement agencies throughout the Lowcountry. For that
reason, we have not yet established a closing date for applications
for the Chief position. In the interim please rest assured that our law
enforcement efforts are in very good hands. Lt. Chris Griffin, our senior
officer, leads the department with our able Town Administrator, Andy
Benke, continuing to provide procedural guidance and administrative
oversight, and legal assistance from Town Attorney Larry Dodds.
ISLAND FARMERS MARKET IS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN
Please check it out. This is a great chance to buy local food and
other products, and to visit with your Island neighbors. Thanks
to Recreation Committee Chair Sarah Church and her committee
members (Susan Middaugh and Rita Langley), and Town Market
Manager (among many other roles) Lisa Darrow for making this
happen and grow.
Enjoy it on Thursday afternoons, 2:30-7 p.m. at 1921 IOn Avenue,
next to Poe Library, off of the entry to the school (Mike Perkis Way).
GEE, BEES, AT BGCC?
No, Barry Gibb wont be at the next Battery Gadsden Cultural Center
(BGCC) offering. But there will be an informative and interesting
presentation about the secret and not-so-secret lives of bees, their
value to our lives, the threats to their lives, and more, all by Diana
Rouse of the Bee Cause Project. It will be on Thursday, May 18, 2017,
6-7 p.m. at Battery Gadsden.
Susan Middaugh of our Town Council Recreation Committee and
BGCC Board urges us to, Come out to learn about the Bee Cause
Project, a local and national effort that places honey bee hives in
schools, inspires an appreciation of the vital role of bees in our
natural environment, and educates potential beekeepers.
The admission price (free) is a honey of a deal, and there will no
doubt be a lot of buzz about this event, so even though it is none of
my beeswax whether you go or not OK, thats enough, just check
it out.

See you around the island!

be held at Fort Moultrie on April 29-30, 9 a.m. 5 p.m. each
day. Living history demonstrators in period dress will portray
life at Fort Moultrie in the years immediately after the American
Civil War through living history programs, musket and cannon
drills, and flag raising ceremonies.
While the Civil War era has been well studied, the time right after
the war is often overlooked. As families re-built their lives, and as the
country integrated four million freed enslaved African Americans,
United States soldiers rebuilt coastal forts for continued use for
defending the coastline from foreign invasion.
The schedule for both days is as follows:
Dress Parade
9 a.m. Raising of the flag and attention to orders
Demonstrations:
10 a.m. Small arms firing drill
11 a.m. Heavy gun drill

Fort Moultrie is located at 1214 Middle Street, Sullivans Island.
The site is administered by the National Park Service as a unit of
Fort Sumter National Monument. Fort Moultrie represents the entire
history of static seacoast defense in the United States, from the
American Revolution to the end of World War II. The site is open daily
from 9-5 p.m. and includes a visitor center with museum exhibits and
an orientation film. An entrance fee of $3 for adults and $1 for senior
citizens is charged for the park. For more information visit nps.gov/
