Information Literacy Assignment 5: Source Mining

Instructions

Part 1:
Find and read one scholarly article relevant to your research project. Find a central claim or piece of
information in the article that uses a citation and is relevant to your research question. Locate this
source in the bibliography of the article, and using the library, find and read it. Using your Everyday
Writer, cite both the original source and the source you selected from the original source in MLA 8. In
250 words or less, explain how these two articles are related.

Part 2:
Complete each category in the space provided for your original source only.
Authority: How does the author assure the reader that the information presented is accurate
and complete? Click through links, look up citations, or verify important facts in the article
through a web search. Are the links, citations, or facts presented accurate and relevant? Look up
other articles written by the same author or biographical information about the author. What are
their credentials?
Bias: Explain the commitments of the author. What do they stand to gain from writing this
article? Who is their audience, and how can you tell? What kinds of organizations, ideas, or
beliefs do they associate themselves with? How do you know? Are multiple viewpoints
presented and addressed, or only the viewpoints of the author?
Context: Examine the website, journal, or other context in which the article is written. Is this
context credible? How does this context assure the reader that the content it publishes is
accurate and well-researched? What sort of sources does this context generally use (i.e.,
scholarly journals, popular press, twitter, etc.)? How do these factors shape your view of this
context?
Date: What is the date in which your article was published, and how much does this matter for
your subject? Explain your reasoning.

Relationship between sources (250 words max.): This two sources are related because one was a report
from a simulation on workplace discrimination, and this report was used in the main article to support
the main argument that workplace discrimination still occurs as a result of gender stereotypes. These
journal articles are similar in their overall purpose and argument, but one is used more as a means to
support the other.

Source Analysis (200 words max.)


Authority: The authors of both of these articles show that the information presented is accurate by
citing multiple peer reviewed sources in their writing. This shows readers that the
contents of the articles is trustworthy.

Bias: There is limited bias in both of these sources because they are peer reviewed and
published in generally unbiased journals. There is however, some inherent bias purely
because the nature of the topic but this should not take away from the writing as a
whole.
Content: The context of both of these articles is reliable and well researched. I know this
because both articles are peer reviewed and published in reliable journals. Both articles
use multiple other peer reviewed articles as sources, and this adds to the reliability of
the context in each.
Date: The main article was published in 2008 so it could be considered current, the other
article was published in 2000 so it is not as current but it is not out of date. These
articles are written on topics that are still current so they can be used in my paper.

Part 3: Research Reflection (300 words max.)


1 What steps did you go through to locate both articles? What kind of source is your original (i.e.,
more informative or argumentative)? What databases or search engines did you use? Explain.
Response: I found these sources by going onto google scholar. The first article I found had a list of its
sources and I used this to find the journal publication for the second article. The main article was both
argumentative and informative. It gave lots of information but it used this information to make an
argument.
2 What knowledge have you gained from reading these sources? Has this knowledge affected
your beliefs? Explain.

Response: I have learned about how frequent gender stereotypes are in the workplace and how these can
lead to lower productivity and increased discrimination. Overall these articles have not changed y
beliefs because I am trying to limit my bias.
3 How can you use either source in your project? Which parts of this source are most useful for
your project and why?

Response: I think I could better use the second source since it is a demo of how workplace
discrimination can affect work, this would give me a more real support for my paper.
