As a teacher there is a long term goal that I would work on during the five years that I
work at a school. This is to work on my masters degree and then to move onto get my doctorates
as well. Getting the degree is part of my goal that I need to achieve in order to become a
professor and start working in a university environment. As a student, I felt that learning
Japanese in the college level was very intriguing and very worth the time and money that I put
into it. Maybe this is because I do not really know what it is like to learn in the high school
setting, and this is the perspective that I have as a student. However, I want to successfully work
my way up as a teacher, and as a person of this society. I do not want to stay in one place and just
stay at the same level my entire life. I want to move forward and advance my knowledge in both
Japanese and teaching. As a teacher I want to do my best to progress in the way I teach, and
effectively teach to all types of students. By the end of 2022 I hope to already have my masters,
where all language teachers come together to dedicate in the professional development of
networking, improving, and teaching/learning world languages. This provides a chance for me to
connect with all the other language teachers, share information on teaching lessons and etc.,
while learning and stealing each others effective instruction styles for teaching the target
language. There is also the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).
They focus on the improvement and expansion of teaching and learning all languages at different
levels of instruction as well. This is throughout the States, not just America so it is on a bigger
scale. I believe that being part of these programs will help me to improve as a language teacher
as I take part in the events, communicate with the members, share my knowledge, and gain
knowledge as well.
In my content area, which is Japanese, there are endless things that I will learn as I
There will be something new for me to learn every day, as I teach new/old lessons to students of
various levels. There is the history of Japan, the culture, present Japan versus past Japan, food,
mannerism/etiquette, sports, politics, places/travel, kanji, and etc. There are so many things that I
do now know about Japan or its culture. I know that as I teach the language and the culture to my
students, I will learn new information every day. As I teach my students the language, I will learn
what is effective and what is not, and how the students learn best in each class. There are
numerous styles to teaching a language and how students learn, I have to be opened to trying out
new lessons, and putting my effort to keep the students engaged in the lessons.
During the time that I teach, I want to invest into improving the way I teach by reflecting
and always looking back at what I need to do to fix my lessons. I need to think about what I
could have done better to get the students engaged or work together inside the classroom. I also
need to understand my positive points, so that I know what I am doing right, and how I should
apply that into the rest of my teaching style. There are always going to be times where I feel as if
I could have done something else to make the lesson more successful and students actually get
something out of it. During those times, I want to share with other teachers on what I could have
done to make the lesson more effective, or even ask the students what they were lacking in order
to learn the objective of that day. I believe that self-reflecting, communicating with co-workers,
and taking part in programs inside and outside of school such as the AZLA program will help me
up to, a teacher that students can feel open to, safe, and rely upon. As a teacher, I want to make
the students school environment a place to learn about other peoples cultures, a place to work on
themselves, how to respect others, and how to work in a society that has everyone contributing
and working together. Contributions that I would like to make are to work as an after school tutor
to help students work on developing their Japanese skills, to catch up on work, or to just assist
students with the knowledge that I have, regardless of whether the subject that they were
As a language teacher I believe that the workshops that AZLA holds is an important setting
where language teachers can connect and learn from one another. At these workshops that they
hold, they teach about teaching strategies, activities, lesson plan ideas, and more. I have only
been to one, however, I learned various strategies that I never learned before, and new ideas on
how to use an old activity that I already knew to work with language skills that I never thought I
could apply to that activity. When I become a language teacher, I hope to attend all the
workshops I can in order to gain new insight, ideas, and teaching strategies.
