Music as Artistic Inspiration Lesson Plan

April 17, 2017

Objectives: During this lesson, students will use the music that they listen to to create a work of
art that shows what the song means to them. Understanding lyrics to create an art piece.

Length: 2 weeks

Skills and Ideas: Sketching, painting, coloring, deciphering lyrics, using ones feelings to create
a work of art.

Vocabulary: Lyric, deciphering,

Materials: (Instructional) - Example of song and meaning (J cole - Love yours or Ooola la -
shirts), example image of work, https://genius.com/
(Art) - Paper, paint, headphones, examples, https://genius.com/

Steps:
Lesson 1 Day 1 (Monday Schedule):
(5 min): Introduction to Project
Talk about lyrics, what are they?
Does anyone have a song they love and can relate too?
(15 min): Listen to lyrics that are meaningful to the majority of people.

your mind become ancient artifacts
Have students discuss songs and lyrics they have heard that they like or
that they can connect to.
(5 min): What to look for in a lyric for this project
Must be meaningful to them and have a depiction of the reason in
a art drawing.
School Appropriate Lyrics on the final product
(15 min): Students can listen on computers to music they may want to use in the
project. They will write down at least 3 lyrics that they will turn in at the end of class that they
want to use in the drawing. The lyrics will also have a reason to why they were chosen, either
good design or good connection.
(5 min): Turn in and clean up materials. Collect the lyrics they are using.

Lesson 2 Day 2:
(5 min): Check in
Discuss the lyrics collected from the day before. What I saw vs.
what I would like to see.
Questions and/or concerns
(20 min): Show examples of different ways to create a lyrics art, Listen to songs
while looking at the art.

(25 min): Student work time, Students will work on the lyric that teacher chose
from their 3 that was turned in on day 1 lesson 1. Teacher will look at the student's
sketches and initial idea of their art piece.
(5 min): Clean up

Day 3,4,5,6: Student work days; Teacher check in with students

Lesson 3 Day 7:
(10 min): What we are doing today and why
Check - in critique; students will show work 1 by 1 and and will
receive advice from teacher and classmates about how they
should finish their work.
Make sure all students know that it is ok if they have not finish
their work yet, the critique is to assist us in finishing it.
(25 min): Students show work for 2 min at a time and get some feedback from
classmates and teacher. Have students write down advice that they are hearing about their
work or others work. All advice can help your art grow!
(10 min) Continue working on the assignment.
(5 min) Clean Up

Day 8,9: Work days for music as inspiration. Class critique on day 10.

Lesson 4 Day 10:


(5 min): introduction to the sticky note critique idea.
Students will have 5 or more sticky notes that they must place at a
classmates masterpiece with ideas on how to make the art better.
Or complementing how the student did good in an their art work.
Have an outline of what students can write on the board, show
examples on the board for reference.
(10 min): Class discussion. In small groups have students come up with ideas on
things to write on the sticky notes. After small group discussions, have a class discussion and
write ideas on the board.
(30 min): Sticky note critique, Guide students through the process and explain
that students should be looking at other work for at least 2 min. They should also use all of their
sticky notes in the process.
(5 min): Clean up and wrap up. Collect students critiqued work after they have
read through them. Return in a couple days.

Assessment:
1. Lyric choices - are they meaningful and have reason and/or design ideas
2. Check ins - Making sure that students are using good lyrics that are meaningful and
have a good design behind it.

so that it is not just a work. Creating text with drawing.
