opportunities.Oneoftheseopportunitiesisworkingwithstudentswhosefirstlanguage
isnotEnglishandwemusthelpthesestudentsdeveloptheirsocialandacademic
Englishtohelpthemachievesuccessbothatschoolandoutsideofschool.Onearea
thatstudentsmayfeelintimidatedandoverwhelmedbyiswriting.Thefollowing
documentwilloutlinesomestrategiestohelpyouastheteacherencourageand
empoweryourstudentstobesuccessfulwriters.

WritingtoLearn
Writingtolearnisamethodthatoffersstudentsanopportunitytowriteinshort,
frequentburststhatareincludedregularlyinthelesson.

Regularexposuremayhelpstudentsfeelcomfortablewriting.
Somestrategiestousewritingtolearnincludethefollowing:

ChunkandChewactivitiesthatasksstudentstotakeshortnotesat
variouspointsofalessonwherestudentscantakeaminuteortwoto

checkforunderstanding.Exitslipstohelpstudentsreflectonwhatwas
learnedduringthelessonandadmitslipstohelpstudentsreflectonwhat

ELL/ESLstudentsshouldhavemanyopportunitiestoworkwiththeirpeers.

Thismayincludesmallgroupcollaboration,think-pair-sharesorcollaborative
sentences.

Studentscanusetechnologysuchasgoogledrivetocollaborativelycreate
documents.

Studentscantakepartinthelearningprocessbyparticipatingintherubric
creationprocessandeditingpeerwork.
