edTPA-Style Technology Lesson Plan (Modified for EDU 276)

Name(s): Maria DeSantis, Elena Pochodylo, Rebecca Lenseth Date: 2/09/17
Lesson Title: Lets Make Music Sentences!
Subject: Literacy
Age or Grade Level: 2nd Grade Number of Students:20 Length of Lesson: 15 min
Central Focus [Central Focus: This is the main focus of your lesson, it should be a broad topic,
such as Comprehension, Vocabulary, or Researching Information]
Essential Strategy Literacy in music, using an online piano to form a sentence. Teaches
typing and sentence structure in a way that children internalize music

[Essential Strategy: This is the strategy that you plan to teach your students to
use. For the edTPA in Elementary Education, every lesson should have an
essential strategy that you teach the students to do. This is NOT your teaching
strategy--this is the strategy the students will use. For example, graphic
organizers is a teaching tool, not a strategy; however, planning writing is a
strategy that writers use before they begin writing--planning could be an
essential strategy that is taught with a graphic organizer.]

Prior Academic Ability to spell own name, ability to read basic words on the screen, use of a
Knowledge keyboard, work on simple sentences
What knowledge, skills, and
concepts must students already
know to be successful with this

Introduction to Lesson
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Teachers will introduce the lesson. Today we will be making music sentences.

Lets figure out together what that means.
Students will listen to the teacher introduce the lesson.
Teacher will put the children into preassigned partnerships. The partners will sit
next to each other on separate computers.
Students will go with their partner and sit down next to them.
Write short descriptions Describe how you will introduce the lesson. What will you do to activate prior
here knowledge and/or to assess background information? Be explicit and clear.

[Example: Students will be instructed to open the google doc and access the online piano.
Introduction to Key We will then give an example of how to use said piano by

You may use bullets or numbers to make your lessons step-by-step. Avoid
paragraphs.

Instructional Activity
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Teacher will begin to model the online piano by using a simple word cat to show
that letters correspond with keys.
Teacher will instruct the students to check their email. They will open the email
from Ms. Pochodylo and click on the link.
Students will open the email and click on the link.
Teacher will guide the students through the powerpoint. For every word, the
children will practice what is on the board. The teachers will also verbally say the
word, therefore there is both a visual and auditory element for different learners.
Students will play the piano for the word that is on the board when the teacher
instructs them to.
Teacher will instruct the student to type the sentence on the board.
Students will type the sentence.
Teacher will explain that students will create their own sentence of at least 4
words.
Students will work with their partner to make their sentence. They can write it
down on paper, memorize it, or write it into a word processor.
Write short descriptions Describe how you plan to explicitly teach the skill or strategy of your lesson
here objectives. Write instructional strategies that are detailed enough that a substitute
teacher could walk in and teach from your plan if need be. Be very specific;
instead of Go over examples of words to describe winter, write, Go over the
following words to describe winter, writing each one on the whiteboard: cold, icy,
freezing, white, quiet.

There will be direct instruction in typing the words onto the keyboard. There will
be a word on the board in a power point. The children will type it to practice.
These words are: snow, animals, piano, school, winter, reading, play, music,
count, picture. The word should be given both orally and visually. This will allow
them to have scaffolding for typing the full sentence at the end. They will then
type the sentence at the end of the powerpoint I like to learn.

Extension/Closure Activity
Description of What Teacher and Students Do:
Teacher will instruct each partnership to share their music sentence to the class in
the front. They will say their sentence first and then play it to the class.
When instructed, the students will share their sentence with their partner in the
front. They will say the sentence first then play it for the class.

Write short descriptions What will you have students do in order to practice the skill that you taught them in
here the instructional activity above? Describe in detail how you will instruct them and
exactly what they will be doing during this work time. How will you assist students
who need more support? This activity should have students showing directly how
they have met your learning objectives. You may describe how you plan to assess.

Their closure activity is also their assessment. They will create a sentence of their
own (minimum of four words) and will have 2 minutes to work on it with their
partner. We will go around the room and ask to hear the final product. If the
students can both correctly complete the activity, they are free to play with the
piano until everyone has been heard.

EDU 276 Lesson Plan Commentary

Group Member Names: Maria DeSantis, Elena Pochodylo, Rebecca Lenseth

Instructor: Ms. Carrie Davenport
Due date: 02/09/17

Central Focus
Describe the central focus and main purpose for the content you will teach in the lesson.

The central focus for this lesson is to show that literacy and music can go together. The children will
have a fun and interesting way to practice creating their own sentence and connecting it with
auditory sounds.

Essential Strategy
Essential strategies are strategies that can help students to learn effectively. Some examples
include: close reading, visualization, questioning the author, comparing & contrasting, the stages of
writing (planning, drafting, revising, editing, publishing), making predictions, summarizing,
sequencing, and word study.
a. Describe the essential strategy you selected and explain how the strategy
helps your students learn the central focus.
We chose the stages of writing, that include planning and drafting. This strategy will help
them to plan and draft a sentence that they will share with the class. They will need to be
able to make a sentence in order to perform their sentence using the musical strategy.
b. Describe the connection to literacy (reading and/or writing) your lesson
demonstrates.
Our lesson connects to literacy because the children will practice typing words and then they
will create their own sentence. This is part of writing. Even though they are not writing in a
traditional sense, they are writing a sentence. They will strategize with their partner and go
through the act of planning their writing.

Instructional Methods
Instructional methods are ways of teaching content, not to be confused with essential strategies.
Some examples include: think alouds, modeling, read alouds, direct instruction, shared writing,
guided reading, think-pair-share, class discussion, cooperative learning (like jigsaw), reciprocal
teaching, or simulations.
a. Describe the instructional methods you planned in your lesson.

The instructional methods we planned in our lesson is to use modeling and think-pair-share.
We will first model how to use the online keyboard. Then in their partnerships, they will think
about a sentence and then share their musical sentence with the class.
b. Describe the instructional materials you plan to use in teaching. This can be
handouts, slides, web resources, books, videos, or any other materials needed.

The instructional materials needed is a computer and headphones. We will be showing them
a google slides presentation. Then they will go to their email to access the website,
http://virtualpiano.net/ . This will be the web resource they will use to create their musical
sentence.

Technology Incorporation

4
Template designed by Sturm (2016)
Describe how you have incorporated technology into your lesson. How will students interact with
technology? How will the teacher utilize technology in instruction? Justify how your technology
choices enhance the lesson design.

The students interact with technology for almost the entire lesson. They have to be on their computer
to get into their email to get to the link to the virtual piano. Then they are practicing the word that is
on the google slides with the virtual piano. Then they are left with their partners to work with the
virtual piano. The teacher uses technology to present the practice words for the children, to give
them both the visual and auditory aspects. The technology is the core of this lesson. It allows the
children an interesting way to practice the act of writing and creating, while incorporating music into
it.

Supporting Student Learning

Describe and justify why your planned instruction is appropriate for all learners. Describe how you
plan to help students who need more support.

Our planned instruction is appropriate for all learners. Some students might need help getting to their
email and/or the website, but that can easily be remedied by walking around and making sure they
access the website.

Assessment
Describe your planned assessment. Explain how your assessment will provide evidence that
students can use the strategy you taught.

The assessment is when they play their sentence for the class. This is more of an informal sentence.
If they make a sentence that follows the criteria and they play it on the virtual piano, then we know
that they understood the lesson.
