Teacher(s): Lauren Thomas Subject: 9th Grade Science

Standard(s):

S1. C2. PO 1. Demonstrate safe and ethical procedures (e.g., use and care of
technology, materials, organisms) and behavior in all science inquiry.
ISTE-T: 1c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and
clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative
processes, 1d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in
learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual
environments, 2a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that
incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and
creativity, 3c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to
students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats, 4b.
Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies
providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
ISTE-S: 5b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports
collaboration, learning, and productivity.
Objectives (Explicit):

Students will practice proper scientific inquiry processes by following

laboratory safety and ethics guidelines.
Evidence of Mastery: Provided by worksheet/contract that students will complete to assess their
understanding of laboratory policies and procedures. Each question will have only one correct
response and will be graded by use of a key. If 100% accuracy is not achieved, students may
correct their answers as many times as necessary until they do so.

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):

View the laboratory safety video.

Write the answers to the fill-in-the-blank worksheet that accompanies the video.
During the jeopardy game, say the correct answer to each question aloud with
your team.
Key vocabulary: Safety glasses/goggles, chemicals, Materials/Technology Resources to be
corrosive, flammable, aseptic, wafting, eye-wash Used: Laboratory safety video (via
sink, chemical shower, spill. projector), Jeopardy game (via power point
presentation).

Opening: Students, today we will be learning the most important material of this course. Next
week, we will conduct our first lab! However, before we get to have fun conducting experiments,
it is crucial that you all are aware of proper safety practices in the lab. On occasion, we will be
working with harsh chemicals, fire, sharp tools, and combustibles. If we are not working safely,
the smallest acts of carelessness can become hugely dangerous situations. So, today, we are going
to watch a laboratory safety video, and youll follow along with the worksheet I am passing out.
This worksheet is your laboratory safety contract. If you wish to participate in the laboratory next
week, it must be completed with 100% accuracy and signed at the bottom by you. When we are
done with that, we are going to play a game to see if you are officially ready to conduct
experiments!

Instructional Input
Teacher Will: Ask guiding questions Student Will: Watch safety video and
throughout the video to assess student answer questions that I will prompt.
understanding of safety procedures.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation: Students with audio/visual impairments will be

seated as closely as possible to the projection screen.

Teacher Will: Lead jeopardy review game to Student Will: Discuss and answer jeopardy
Guided Practice

check for students understanding of questions as a team

laboratory safety.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation: To ensure that all students are participating and

being included, no member of the team may answer twice during the game; each question
must have a different spokesperson.
Practice Independent

Teacher Will: Check students Student Will: Complete worksheet/safety

worksheet/safety contract for accuracy and contract as they view the laboratory safety
completion. video.

Co-Teaching Strategy/Differentiation: For students with literacy struggles, an aid will be

present to read each question to the student and/or record their answers .

Closing/Student Reflection/Real-life connections: Emphasis on the importance of laboratory

safety, offer examples of what could go wrong if certain procedures arent followed, provide a
real-life example of a laboratory accident.
