Resource-Based Learning with Technology

Choose a state or common core content standard to be covered with this lesson. You can
find the common core standards (which relate to language arts and math) at
http://www.corestandards.org/read-the-standards/ and the state standards at
http://doe.sd.gov/contentstandards/.

When you have chosen a content standard, develop a lesson plan that uses only existing
online learning resources (more than one) to help your students meet the content
standard. The idea is that students will fully learn a concept by viewing, listening, and/or
reading the online resources, not by listening to you. Your lesson plan may include
directions and instructions from the teacher, but it may not include any live content
presentation or lecture from you. Be sure to include a high amount of detail in your
directions so that young students would be able to understand and execute the
directions. Also use language appropriate for your audiences understanding.

This lesson plan should include the following elements:

A lesson title and summary

A brief description of your learners including grade and subject area
A list of links to the online learning resources from which students will learn,
including links to these resources
A list of the Common Core/State standard(s) you chose
A list of materials and technologies used by the teacher and students
A timeline of activities (instructional procedures) that would be completed in
the lesson. This should be very detailed and show the steps in the lesson from
start to finish. Also indicate in which order and how each online learning
resource will be featured and tell any directions/instructions or help that the
teacher should give to students during the lesson. Tell what the students and
teacher would do during each step of the process and make this section is
detailed enough for a substitute teacher to easily read and understand what to
do.
An assessment plan that includes a rubric listing all elements you will be
grading and how these will add up to a final grade

You may use the form on the next page to guide you as you do this assignment, but you
are not required to do so. Here is the grading rubric for this project:

Name, Title, and summary are included 5/5

Your learners are briefly described, including grade and subject 5/5
The state/common core standard you chose is strongly supported in 20/20
the lesson activities
A list of the online learning resources is included and features links. 15/15
The list of materials and technologies used by teachers and students 10/10
is included and appropriate
The timeline of activities (instructional procedures) shows the steps in 15/15
the lesson from start to finish and indicates how each online learning
resource is used in the lesson
The timeline of activities is detailed enough that another teacher could 10/10
read, understand and teach this lesson
The assessment plan includes a rubric and is appropriate for the 10/10
learning outcomes and instructional procedures (activities)
The assignment is free of grammatical and spelling errors 10/10
Total 100/100

Title: Mastering prepositions

Summary: Students will first watch a video on what a preposition is,

examples of prepositions, and how to identify them in sentences. They will
then complete a group quiz in class over the video. Students will then watch a
video on youtube that describes four commonly used prepositions and then
will complete an assignment on the app Learn Prepositions.

Learners: The class covers fourth grade language arts.

Standards:

- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar
and usage when writing or speaking.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1.E

Timeline of activities (Instructional Procedures):

- Begin by introducing the topic for todays lesson

- Explain that for the purposes of this lesson, I will be doing none of the
teaching or making any of the work for the students to complete.
Instead, students will watch videos explaining the concepts of the
lesson and completing assignments on apps that they will download on
their iPad.
- Have students download the two desired apps
- Play first video (What is a Preposition? - Definition, Uses & Examples)
on the Smartboard for the class to watch as a group (This will take
around 4 - 5 min)
- Following the video, break the students up into groups of four and have
them complete the quiz that goes with the video on a sheet of paper
(the quiz will be displayed on the Smartboard and groups will answer
questions as we go through each one) They will not be able to
complete the quiz on their own as there is an account needed to
display the quiz. Inform the students this is simply a practice quiz and
will not be graded
- After the completion of the quiz, we will go through the answers and
explain each as we go along to ensure proper understanding by every
student.
- Following the completion of this, go back to the Smartboard and play
the second video (English Grammar: The prepositions At, On, In, By) to
go into greater detail on when to use the four prepositions and how to
identify them in sentences.
- When the video is finished, have the students open their iPads and
open up the app Learn Prepositions. Lead the students through how to
use the app with your own iPad connected to the Smartboard. Have the
students go to the At, On, In section of the app. Once opened, explain
that this will be an assignment they will need to complete on their own
with the remainder of class and at home. Show two or three examples
to the students on what the questions will be like and how to answer
them. Tell the students that they need to correctly answer 50 questions
to complete the assignment. Once they correctly answer 50 questions,
they should take a screenshot of the page to show me prior to the next
days lesson.
- The following day, after checking to ensure all students correctly
answered 50 questions, I will give a ten question quiz over the same
three or four prepositions. This will be used to ensure student
understanding of prepositions before moving onto more information on
prepositions.
Assessment Plan:
- I plan to give a short ten question quiz over the assignment completed
prior to the following lesson to ensure understanding.
- Rubric
- Completion of Learn Prepositions App assignment (10 points)
- Participation in Group quiz (5 points)
- Student Understanding Quiz (10 points)
- Total (25 points)
