How does sleep relate to GPA?

The topic our group decided to research was the correlation between sleep hours and GPA

scores. We used a Google Form to ask the following questions:

1. What is your grade level?

2. What is your GPA?

3. How many hours of sleep do you get per night?

4. Do you feel like you are getting enough sleep?

5. Are you often tired at school?

6. Do you think the amount of sleep you get affects your GPA?

7. Do you think if you got more sleep you would get a higher GPA?

8. Do you nap?

9. How long do you usually nap?

10. How many times per week?

We received 126 student responses, which we believe is a decent representation of our

demographic.

We had 126 students respond to our survey. 65 of them were freshmen, 27 of them were

sophomores, 25 of them were juniors, and 9 were seniors.

In this chart, we can see the GPA data from all the student who had done the survey. Most of the

students are in the range of 3.00 to 3.99; there are 75 students within this category. Very few

students have a GPA below 2.00. As well as 13 students who have a GPA of 4.00 or higher. The

rest of the students lie in the range between 2.00 to 2.99.

In this chart, we noticed that most of the students get an average of 4 to 6 or 7 to 9 hours of sleep

per night. It is evident that students who did not get enough sleep or only get 1 to 3 hours per

night are the students with lower GPAs. And as we can see, students who sleep more than 10

hours per night are the students with the highest GPAs.

Most of the students have a GPA of 3.00 to 3.99, and we can see that most people believe they

do not get enough sleep per night, regardless of GPA range except for the 2.00 to 2.99 range.

Its very clear that students who get more sleep per night have higher GPAs. So, when students

think that they get enough sleep every day, they do not feel tired at school. We may also

conclude by saying that the students who do not feel tired at school are probably more attentive

than those students who are tired at school, and their GPA will reflect this.

Nap?

Most people with a high GPA thought more sleep would not help them but many people with a

low GPA felt that more sleep would help them. This would make sense as this group would be

the one that would get the most out of more sleep. The students with GPAs between 3.00 to 3.99

answered very evenly, almost 50/50.

People with the GPAs between 3.00 to 3.99 were relatively evenly spread out throughout all

three answers. Interestingly though, the 2.00 to 2.99 group did not have a single response of

no, which supports the hypothesis of positive sleep correlation. Students with a GPA of 4.00 or

higher answered no with a surprising majority.

Students that have a GPA in the 1.99 or below range had a very low amount of answers over all

categories. Neither 4.0 or higher nor 1.99 or below groups took a 3+ hour nap. The students

with a GPA of 3.00 to 3.99 answered surprisingly evenly. This information also supports the

notion that more sleep has a positive correlation and less sleep has no correlation.

Interestingly, GPAs of 4.00 or higher had the least number of students napping per week.

Students with GPAs between 3.00 to 3.99 had a large amount of people napping every day.

Based on this graph, we can conclude that an average GPA between 3.00 to 3.99 is achievable,

regardless of how many naps per week.
