2.3 Availability
I-joists are widely regarded as a premium construc-
tion material and are available throughout the US. To ef-
ficiently specify I-joists for individual construction
projects, consideration should be given to the size and the
required strength of the I-joist. Sizes vary with each indi-
vidual product. The best source of this information is your
local lumber supplier, distribution center or I-joist manu-
facturer. Proper design is facilitated through the use of
manufacturers literature and specification software avail-
able from I-joist manufacturers.

7.1 Introduction
Each jobsite utilizing I-joists should have specific
details addressing handling, storage, bracing, web holes,
web stiffeners (when required) and bearing details. Each
manufacturer publishes this information in the form of
installation guides available from retail distributors or
jobsite specific detail packages for joists in commercial
applications. The installation guidelines address framing
methods recommended for common applications in
residential construction, and the manufacturer should be
contacted if special details are required.
