the number of values in a data set. Median- is the middle value. Mode- the number that appears the most.
Maximum- the largest value in the data
set. Minimum- the smallest value in the data set.
First Quartile: median of the lower half of
data Second quartile: the median. Third quartile: median of the upper half of data. Measure of spread- the number used to describe how far apart certain key values are from each other.
Interquartile range- the difference
between quartile one and three. Range- the difference between the maximum and minimum. Mead absolute deviation- the average absolute value of the difference between each data point in the data set and the mean.
Ex.1 Find the mean, median, mode,
interquartile range, range, and make a box plot. Outliers -data values that are much less/greater than most of the values in the data set. To determine lower outliers, plug into:
If there is a number less than this in the
data set, it is in an outlier.
If there is a number greater than this in
the data set, it is an outlier.
Ex.1 Are there outliers? Then choose the
best measure of center. Ex.2 Find the variance.
Ex.3 Find the standard deviation.
Uniform distribution- is a set of values that are symmetric to the mean and have equal frequencies corresponding to any two equally sized intervals.
Normal distribution- set of values that are
symmetric to the mean. Forms a normal curve. Ex.1 Find the proportion of values between 0 and 1 in a uniform distribution that has an interval of -3 to 3. Ex.2 Madison needs to ride a shuttle bus to reach an airport terminal. Shuttle buses arrive every 15 minutes, and the arrival time for buses are uniformly distributed. What is the proportion that Madison will need to wait more than 6 minutes for a bus. Ex.3 temperature in a controlled room is normally distributed throughout the day, with a mean of 0 Celsius and a standard deviation of 1 Celsius. Shane randomly selects a time to enter the room. What is the probability that the temperature will be between -1 Celsius and 1 Celsius. Ex.4 The scores of a particular college admission test are normally distributed, with a mean score of 30 and a standard deviation of 2. Erin scored a 34 on her test. If possible, determine the percent of test takers whom Erin out performed on the test. Ex1 Test scores of students in a class have a mean of 70 and a standard deviation of 12. What is the percentage of students who scored more than 95? Ex.2 An organization made a survey on the monthly salary of their clerical level employees in Dallas. The data revealed the mean as 4,000 with a standard deviation of 600. Find what percent of employees are in the salary bracket [4,000, 4,500].
