Biographical Note:
James F. Norton was a physicist employed by the General Electric Companys Advanced
Technology Laboratories. His career at General Electric Company began in 1951. His focus was
on developing projects in the areas of particle optics, information storage, vacuum mass
spectrometry and meteorology. More specifically, he specialized in electron microscopy. Norton
received a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics from Yale University in 1946. During his time at
Yale, he took part in the Navy V-12 Program, where he was commissioned as an ensign. In 1951,
he obtained a Masters of Science in physics from the University of Rochester. While at
Rochester, he studied high-energy particles and their measurement as well as operating the
cyclotron. As his work was an innovation in the field, he had presented his research before the
Electron Microscope Society, the Annual Conference on Industrial Applications of X-Ray
Analysis, and GOSAM. At the time of writing, Norton is still alive. Other notable family
members included Thomas Norton (his brother) and Francis J. Norton (his father). Both of the
aforementioned individuals have made a name for themselves in the field of science.

Provenance/ Acquisition
This collection was obtained by the Museum of Innovation and Science in Schenectady, NY in
2008 by archivist Chris Hunter. The papers had been previously rehoused, preserving as much of
the original order as possible. I was told that the original arrangement to the papers, kept at
Nortons residence, was not that intuitive, so an order to the papers had been induced to create a
more fluid collection.

Scope and Content

Within the collection, there are primarily three groupings of records. Nortons research papers
and notes, reports and publications, and electron microscope photographs and slides comprise the
collection. Among the research papers, one can see notes from various physics classes he was
involved with at Stanford University, Cornell University, and others. The publications involve
reports from events such as the 1966 Electron Microscopy Society of America and the 1986
Whitney Symposia on Science in Technology. Nortons patents for various scientific instruments
have been included in this collection, as well. Photographs taken by Norton are almost
exclusively related to his electron microscope research. The work of Howard Sams, Dr. Jeffrey
Shinn and various others are also included with Nortons records for their collaborative efforts.
Important topics that are covered in these papers include research on electron beams, information
storage (related to physics), integrated circuitry, optical engineering, thermoplastic recording,
and other such related topics. The records that are present range from the early 1950s to the early
1990s. Within this date range, the bulk of these records range from the 1960s to the 1980s. The
materials in this collection are entirely in English.

Separation Note
It should be noted that some of the papers involved in this collection have slight mold damage.

Related Collections at the Museum of Innovation and Science:

The first collection that is listed here is relevant to this collection because the papers are
comprised of patents developed by Hull, which is a topic that is relevant to this collection. Hulls
work at the Research Laboratory could be of some research value to those who are researching
James F. Norton, as well. The Remscheid papers are included because mass spectrometers are a
subject covered in these papers, which Norton had used as evidenced by the records available in
this collection. This collection could be useful to those who would like to know the history of the
processed utilized by Norton. Similar to Remscheid, the Francis J. Norton Papers are listed as
related collections due to this connection to the mass spectrometer, but they have not
collaborated on work present in the collection. Francis J. Norton is James F. Nortons father.

Series List
Series 1: Research and Notes (1957-1987)
Organized Alphabetically by Subject

This series contains research papers, coursework notes and other notes relating to electron
microscope research and other related topics.

Series 2: Photographs and Slides (1950-1990, bulk: 1980-88)

Organized Alphabetically by Subject

This series contains chiefly photographs dedicated to Nortons research on the spanning of
electron microscopes. There are various other groupings of photographs that do not contain any
description. Some of the folders containing photographs also contain related notes. As these
folders contain many more photographs than notes, it seemed reasonable to keep them in the
same series rather than break them up.

Series 3: Reports and Publications (1953-1990, bulk: 1961-1980)

Organized Alphabetically by Subject

This series contains scientific reports conducted by Norton, publications relating to his work, and
presentations at important scientific conferences. Other miscellaneous publications that are
present in this series are manuals to various General Electric products. Some of the publications
present in this collection were written by James F. Nortons father, Francis.
