VAE 101 FINAL Lesson Plan

Project photo is
attached to the Lesson Title: Shapes within Shapes
back. Length of Lesson: 20 - 25 minutes
Teacher: Brittany Resar
Grade Level: 1st grade

How do you know I know this project is appropriate for 1st grade students because students in
this project is Kindergarten know the terms shape, size, line, straight, and curvy. All of these terms
appropriate for are used in the art project and since the students are in 1st grade and it was part of
the grade level? their vocabulary in Kindergarten, they would be able to make this project.
Furthermore, they should know the different types of shapes, such as circles,
squares, diamonds, ovals, etc.., and knowing these shapes is what the project is
centered around.

Ohio Visual Arts 2PR - Generate ideas and images for artwork based on observation, memory,
Learning imagination, and experience
Standards:
4PR - Reduce objects into basic shapes and lines in relation to the whole image

*These are standards for Kindergarten although the project is intended for first
grade students. If the project was completed at the beginning of the year, this would
show the teacher whether or not the students met the Ohio Visual Arts Standards in
Kindergarten. If not, then this would let the teacher know it will be important to
meet the Kindergarten standards before moving onto first-grade standards.

Question(s): What types of shapes are difficult to arrange to form a larger shape?
Pushes learning Would there have been an easier way to cut out the shapes, rather than cutting them
FURTHER out one-by-one?
Could you arrange the smaller shapes you cut out to form a larger shape that was not
the same as the small shapes?

1 minute Have the students choose between 1 - 4 other pieces of
construction paper (each student can choose how many other
pieces they want and what colors they want).

5 minutes Explain the process to the students:

1. Students will choose any shape they want.
2. Then they will write the name of the shape at the bottom of the
first piece of construction paper they picked up. If many students
need assistance, the teacher can write the name of all the shapes
on the board for the students to copy. Then they will set the piece
of construction paper aside.
3. Next, they will draw the shape they chose multiple times on their
remaining pieces of construction paper. The shape should not be
extremely small, but it should not be extremely large either.
Students should cut out approximately 25 - 50 shapes depending
on how large they want their final product to be. * Review scissor
safety before the students start cutting out their shapes!
4. The students will then arrange the smaller shapes to form a large
shape. For example, if a student cut out small squares, then they
will arrange the small squares to form a big square.
5. Students will make the border first (outside of the shape) and then
fill in the inside. When making the border, explain to students
that it is helpful if the edges are made with parts of the smaller
shapes that are straight.
6. Then students will glue down their shapes. *Review glue safety
before students start gluing.

Students work at their desks to cut out the small shapes, arrange
them into a larger shape, and then glue down the shapes. When
the students are finished, they can bring their finished product to
15 - 20 the teacher who will set it aside to dry.

Final Visual The final visual outcome is a large shape, such as a triangle, composed of smaller

our minds! in regards to the small shapes that the students cut out should be the same large
shape that the students arranged the smaller shapes into.

Explain how this This is a rich art project because the students are able to create an art project while
is a rich art still learning about shapes. When making this project, students will be practicing
project / overall, drawing and cutting out a specific shape. Then, students will arrange their smaller
what are the shapes into a larger shape. However, the students will be doing this creatively since
students learning? they have the opportunity to make a lot of decisions in this art project, such as what
shape they want to create and what color construction paper they want to use.
Overall, this is a rich project because the students are learning about shapes while
creating a fun art project.

Is this project This project is teacher guided. Although there are certain requirements for the
Teacher Directed, students, such as the shape that they cut out small must form a larger version of the

or Child example, students are not forced to make a specific shape. There are a variety of
Centered? shapes that students can choose from. Furthermore, the students will have the
opportunity to choose which type of material they would like to use. Students will
Explain how you have the option to choose between many colors of construction paper. If a student
know. only wants to use one piece of construction paper that is acceptable, but if a student
wants to use multiple pieces of construction paper that is fine too. Furthermore,
students have the freedom to draw the shapes or objects like they want. There will
not be stencils for the students to trace the shapes, so they will have the opportunity
to draw the shapes themselves. The only requirement is that the shape the students
draw must resemble the actual shape.

Why did you I chose this project because I thought it looked very interesting. When I first saw the
choose this picture of the finished project on Pinterest, I thought that it looked very creative and
project? fun. I immediately started to think of ways that I could modify the project to create a
fun and engaging lesson plan. I also thought that this project would be very easy to
integrate with other subjects, so it would be a rich learning experience for the
students.
